This is the only other place I've ever seen than a very, very weird school that had people that can hit like this - people who have never experienced this don't understand what they're seeing - the moves aren't slow, and those hits that don't look like they should hurt, hurt way more than you could possibly think unless you had someone do it to you. Again, blown away, for the few who really understand what you're seeing and how rare it is, you know what I mean, and it's very, very cool.
I attended Martins seminar in Torquay last night. Haven’t seen him since he was a brown belt in Kenpo, but he hasn’t changed a bit. He is still one of the nicest, unassuming people I have been fortunate to have known in my life. Superb person, and a superb martial artist. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
its very similer to aikido and Krav maga i havent seen much of this martial art before but i know the KGB used it and it seems incredibly affective and the blending properties are great i cant imagine the use it must have been to the KGB
We live in glory days my friends. So much is open from the taking. There was a time when Indonesia was very friendly with Soviet advisors. Supposed psychic methods seen used in systema we also find in systems like Hongp Dremo and Yellow Bamboo in Java. One thing to remember! Strong faith in higher power. And to remain calm. If your in a high emotional state ones mind can be carried away. If you are good hearted/righteous. Fear not! Take the first step and you shall be met on the tenth.
I know many Russian millitary folks and some fought in Afganistan. None have heard of Systema. Most have combat sambo, boxing, and Judo experience. Systema was taught to a few units here and there.
You are right - today not so many guys in Russia are involved with it. So happened that Systema, is more known outside of Russia than inside. The problem was caused by Bolshevism - there was a killing of all potentially dangerous people for the new power. And this situation repeated itself right after the Second World War termination. Therefore the given disciplines are known only by few military experts, now.
@SuperAlmaz1 Stalin, in his paranoia, killed thousands of Russian soldiers. Nonetheless, I guess some form of systema has survived to present times-- it is certainly taught to some? all? Spetznaz.
This is all true. Systema exists till alive its last carrier.
Russia is a big country and because of it not happend to destroy all of known with Systema. That's why there is a possibility of studing that old Knowledge now.
Was systema ever tested in a fast knife competition (using fake knives of course) similar to penkak silat and escrima competitions? It would be interesting to see it move in fast motion. I do love the concept.
All the time. And some people outside of seminars have been known to use real knives. the training always starts slow. it gets fast at the seminars, but if you see it on video, you won't see anything at all.
Russia didn't do too well in Afghanistan and it didn't have much success in Chechnya. I also don't think Russian millitary used hand to hand in those conflicts. But this Martin guy is smooth.
there were more then a few instances where Russian soldiers were engaged in hand to hand combat with Mujahideen. By the way- Russia has been very sucessfull in Chechnya- it still belongs to Russia!
This has nothing to do with Systema. I'm sure now and then Russians got into H2H combat. Thats part of war. But these days, wars are not won and lost in a Hand to Hand battle. We're not in feudal Japan. I'm also sure that most Russian soldiers do not practice Systema. If are some, it is a select few.
yes- but systema is not just hand to hand combat- systema incorporates every facet of combat- from defensive driving, firearm tactics, ambush, camoflage, moving silently, etc.- these things are all taught in Russian military systema. but what you said is correct.
I'm not anti Systema at all. I don't believe in psychic fighting. Yes. I don't. I also know there are far more quacks than legit instructors (I have met a few). But Vlad is for real. I loved his videos. I also think a lot has to do with the individual's natural abilities. If that's you in the video, you don't move like most other systema students. Vlad doesnt move like most Systema students. Your body reacts different to attack. Genetics and natural skills are important in this art.
Generally it takes only a few movements and seconds to do something, is VERY FAST and explosive, please ask to certified instructors or go to one event and ask about this topic, Good Luck!
It's a type of natural movement that looks easy, but when u try it not so easy to mimic. Amazing, and the faster & harder they go the more effective the art is.
i attended one of his seminars, he is an amazing guy, he is really humble too. what i love about systema is that your teachers are like your brothers and friends, they learn with you, make mistakes with you and achieve sucesses with you. with other martial arts its like IM THE MASTER AND CAN DO NO WRONG, BOW TO ME!! that is bullshit- and i cant stand it. other martial arts are like wierd cults that revolve around a demi-god like master. systema is really the perfect style for me.
Yeah, I totally agree, I cross train Systema with mma, it really helps me to strike harder, and to escape holds and submission attempts. Plus I can really knee someone hard in the face, while they're attempting a takedown. I've been to a couple of Martin's seminars, I remember he performed a dive right in the middle of the wooden floor, I still don't know how he performed it without hurting himself. I also had the priviledge to attend Mikhail and Vladimirs seminars. Unbelievabe stuff.
@XIPM3 Very good comment, I train kickboxing in Serbia and I am very good friend with my coach, but he has never said IM THE MASTER AND CAN DO NO WRONG, BOW TO ME!!
Dude, why do not select your clubs more carefully? One has to chooze instructors well, and take one's time. So far I studied 5 different styles, and I knew many instructors but I met with only once with this extreme "IM THE MASTER AND CAN DO NO WRONG, BOW TO ME!!" attitude. Of course I avoided that group.
Fluid and a bit more of combinations used and using more of the elbow for redirection and as a weapon..! like it..! and will take note next time in my training session.
Martin is the man! Can't wait to see him when he comes to NZ next month.

Learning this kind of flow must be very difficult. How much year does it take to make it to a good level?
