If you are very serious about you distant vision, and no 'deeper" than about -1 to -2 diopters get a free Snellen (visual acuity) chart, set it up, and confirm your vision. 20/40 passes the driving requirement in most states. (Just type the W ' s) then
.i-see.org/eyecharts.html
Select the first PDF chart, print it out, and start checking.
Don is indeed correct in this video -- and medical people have recognized the necessity of it. When used as Dr. Prentice recommends -- then people do clear their visual acuity back to normal. A formal study could succeed by following his recommendation before your Snellen goes below 20/50.
Prentice 4 > Similar results have been attained in 34 like cases ...but the process is very tedious for the patients, and unless their understanding is clear on the subject, it is almost impossible to induce them to undergo the trial. [ Otis> This is truly the issue. It MUST be the person's wisdom, to accept the "tedious" use of a plus, and to do it with no let up, that would make prevention (at 20/50, -3/4 diopter) possible. THAT is the real and only issue.
Prentice 3 > After reading in these glasses for several days, the patient was able to read print twelve inches from the eyes. In six months I changed the glasses for reading and writing to a +4 D without seeing the patient. After using the +4 D glasses for several months he again came under my care for an examination, when the left eye gave twenty-twentieths vision.
Prentice 2> Age forty-three; myopia; had been wearing over the right eye -1.25 D, left eye -1 D, with little or no change for the space of two years; eyes in use more or less at the near point. I recommended the removal of the concave glasses for distant vision and prescribed +3.50 D for reading, writing and other office work. (-1.25 D is about 20/50 to 20/60 on a Snellen).
Prentice 1> Medical people -- who have truly recognized the natural eye's behavior, and that, at least at the threshold -- IT IS PREVENTABLE. Here is the commentary by a profoundly insightful ophthalmologist. But, as Dr. Prentice states, plus prevention (at -1 diopter is tedious). But to say that "prevention will never happen" is a tragic statement -- because it prevents a preventive scientific study our effort -- that could be effective.
@iamabond007 You say -1/2 diopter? What you do is your choice, of course. If it were ME, I would get a Snellen (visual acuity chart) and determine if I could read the 20/40 line (or better). If I could, I would NOT wear a minus lens. If I had 20/30 (with is probably true for you) I would get a +2 and use it for all close work, and continue to check the Snellen eye chart. This is indeed a matter of your wisdom and choice.
@kenjorko I would suggest getting a Snellen (visual acuity chart) FOR FREE. If you can still read the 20/40 to 20/50 line, then there is a chance for you -- of successful prevention.
Too bad Riruka Dokugamine didn't see this video. Could have helped her see Ichigo Kurosaki much better. (Bleach manga; Lost Substitute Soul Reaper arc joke)
@Sparklecat6 That is EXACTLY how it develops. For the "book worms" with nose-on-book your refractive status goes down at a rate of -1/2 diopter per year. This is confirmed in scientific studies. The pure-science studies show the same thing. If a plus is used when you are at 20/40 (about -3/4 diopters) you can slowly get out of it (clear your Snellen to 20/20. Too bad no one told you about this possibility.
I am a pilot and an engineer. If you are a pilot at 20/40 to 20/50, (about -1 diopter) and wish to clear your Snellen I have a FREE site on how to do it. Just "Google", Otis S. Brown, and read the posts and book. I include videos on how to get and use a Snellen, obtain test lenses, and in about seven months, get back to 20/20. It is all free -- but prevention must be a personal goal in your life.
I "gave up" on ODs ever helping us (or you) with prevention. I order my own glasses from Zennioptical (watch the video). You can follow that video to obtain a Snellen, and if at 20/40, (about -1 diopter) you can slowly clear your Snellen to normal. This does take persistence and knowledge. Other ODs attempt to help, but YOU must do this yourself.
1. lets say i get reading glasses while using computer. Then for seeing distance objects should i use distance glasses or shd i not use any glasses. Which one is better for eyes?
2. Currently i can see my computer well even without glasses. i need glasses for seeing distance objects. So shd i continue to use computer without glasses.
.
4. I went to my doctor and he said if i dnt use distance glasses it will increase my power. Is it so?? By not wearing glasses will i be harming my eyes??
yeah right, i have myopia for the last 3 years caused by my pc screen.
Noone ever told me I can get pc glasses -.- i just bought my eye glasses, and my screen looks blured with them for some reason, i can watch tv somehow instead.
ill ask the doctor what about my pc, maybe he made a wrong diagnose for my eyes, pfff fuck, i dont want new glasses again, i have better things to do...
I actually had an eye doctor tell me to read with my near sighted glasses on. What a fucker. That didn't make sense to me then but I was a kid and I believed him. Maybe next lifetime he will be born and not be able to see. You never know.
@blabblab1212 One optometrist I interviewed told me that kids may loose their glasses if they take them off so they certainly have ways to justify this. Off course, I would recommend the risk of loosing glasses over wearing them none stop.
@blabblab1212 there is eye problem in my right eye of -.5 a doctor prescribed me lens please tell me should i stop wearing it..............................
3. Are you suggesting myopic children be prescribed no minus correction? How will they see distant objects?
4. If you put plus lenses on a child to restrict his accommodation, he'll have trouble focusing at far, and his eyes may develop a tendency to turn out when trying to do so, which can lead to amblyopia (i.e., gradual, irreversible usefulness of one eye).
5. Is one sure that prohibiting the natural system of accommodation of the eye (with plus correction) is healthy?
@Commando303X Distance (minus) prescriptions continue to be the main method for nearsightedness correction and we want people to see clearly with glasses if necessary. We are suggesting children read without using their prescription distance (minus) glasses so their eyes are subject to only the natural amount of accommodation that is required to read. We are just recommending against prolonged close work with distance glasses and advocating generally accepted good reading habits.
@Commando303X Point3: No, the recommendation is that if the child can pass the 20/40 line (DMV) the use of the minus be avoided. The facts (the eye goes down from the minus) should be presented at that point. People (scientists) have been effective in clearing their Snellen back to normal by using the plus with their own wisdom and judgement.
@Commando303X Point 4: No the plus (at 20/40) does not "restrict accommodation", rather the plus used (only for near) optically places the "near" in the distance. Yes, the plus must be used with intelligence, which may be difficult. The child will NOT be wearing the plus for distant objects -- ever. thus there is no problem with distant objects. It can take from several weeks to several months for the child to restore his distant vision by this process.
@Commando303X Point 5: The "plus" does NOT "prohibit" natural accommodation. In fact normal accommodation responds to the plus by setting itself for "distance" -- thus ending "near-point strain". In fact the minus has been PROVEN to be unhealthy. When you conduct a scientific experiment, (Dr. E. Smith) the minus directly CAUSES MYOPIA. That truly is un-healthy, and should be understood by the person who checks his vision at 20/40.
1. What causes that initial development of myopia in a child who isn't being corrected for anything? (Genetic predisposition seems like one reasonable answer.)
2. Myopia may be axial and/or refractive (i.e., the effect of a long eye and/or a steep cornea); the presented theory does not relate to the latter cause. (Of course, it's really the overall axial-refractive relationship that determines ametropia.)
@Commando303X Point #1: I would never say "cause" -- that is misleading. We know that the natural eye adapts to 1) Long-term near, by changing its refractive state "negative". Primates IN THE WILD have positive status and clear distant vision. 2) Primates in cages have NEGATIVE STATUS of from -1.5 to -5 diopters. You don't have to be excessively smart, to figure out that our natural eye "adapt" to long-term near as I described it.
@Commando303X Point #2: It is a negative state of the natural eye. Use of word that PRESUME something that has NEVER BEEN PROVEN -- is always a mistake. You are presuming things that a are false. Work with science and fact (primate data) and you will get the scientific truth, and prevention -- by the person himself. But then, they would have to avoid you -- and do it under they wise education and control.
Would reading glasses really help prevent myopia?? I've heard that it makes the near vision rather lazy and that if used during childhood, it may make the eye underdeveloped because they eye is still growing until u reach the age of about 20
@chenxkun I've never used eyeglasses during my childhood. Since then my vision has got worse and worse. I think genetics plays an important part in nearsightedness, but always let everything you see be focused by the macula. Otherwise you'll experience an accomodation stress which may cause the same loss of vision
Would reading glasses really work to prevent nearsightedness?? I've heard that there are complications when using reading glasses because it may make the eye become underdeveloped especially in children..
I suggest checking this site by an OD -- Chinamyopia (org). Also check myopiafree (com). Prevention depends on wisdom and support of an OD who will help your cihld with a plus.
But, as Engineering-Science -- it is true that the minus has "bad" secondary effect on the natural eye. Plus-prevention is indeed the second-opinion as described by Don Rehm.
@kingofschnitzels Why? Are you a majority-opinion OD? The second-opinion is that it would be very WISE to follow the recommendations in this video. The "aternative" for the child (who gets that FIRST over-prescribed minus -- is indeed "progressive" or stair-case myopia. Have a nice day.
@treehugrurthluvrsupr The minus is indeed very, very easy. Once you start with the minus -- your distant vision is lost -- permanently. But that is your choice.
Minus lenses are not the immediate cause of the acquired type of myopia. The accommodation it may cause the eye to experience is the more direct reason. We believe the predominant reason why vision become "worse" (more nearsighted) is because the eye experience too much close vision regardless of whether minus/distance lenses are used. For this reason we are advocating the reduction of close visual accommodation in general either through proper reading posture and reading glasses.
The eye "goes down" because of lont-term "near". This is a natural process. The rate is -1/2 diopter per year. Thus, it is essential to understand that scientific fact. The time for "prevention" is before any minus is applied. It is an "eiter-or" choice.
The causes of myopia are still not clear! someone says that are liquid retentions that make the eyes longer other is just the muscles surround the eyes who make it longer.
In both cases a treatment could be possible if they only wanted to cure the problem
but lenses, glasses and lasers are the industry for this who treat only the symptoms.
they are experimenting eye drops to shrink the eyes....but who knows when it will be ever approbed!
Think of it this way. Loud noise to the ear is like close up work to the eyes. The longer you are exposed to it or the more intense it is, the more damage you will have to your ears. By wearing ear plugs when exposed to loud noise is like wearing reading glasses when doing close up work. Your ears will only be safer and healthier. The same goes for the eyes.
Even the "more wise" optometrists describe the minus as, "...poison glasses for children". Don is correct about the need for a CHOICE at the threshold. Prevention is then up to YOU.
This preventive method -- is to be used for "functional myopa", meaning that you can still read the 20/60 line on your own Snellen. If you are wise at that point, you can "clear" your Snellen to 20/40 (and pass the DMV). Then, continue and begin to pass the 20/30, 20/25 and 20/20 line in bright light. This is a change in refractive STATE of about +1.0 diopters. It will take about six to 12 months to occur -- under YOUR control.
This alternative only works if you have Pseudomyopia (When the ciliary muscles remain contracted). If Pseudomyopia is not cared for, then it will cause the eye to grow longer. Once the eye grows longer, it's incurable. I wore a +2.00 dioptre reading glasses for a month and my vision went from 20/25 to 20/20-. And a random thing is that my reading glasses look like Harry Potter ones and my roommate made some bad comments. But the funny thing is he's a -8.00 and yet he's still talking. lol
Excellent video. I would add my own anecdotal experience: after developing myopia during college, I just stopped wearing my -2.25/-2.5 contact lenses and started using reading glasses. Low and behold, over a year my long-distance vision improved. I did not return to perfection but it improved enough that I only wear distance glasses or contacts 3days a week or so.
hi i just wanted to thank the creator of this video for helping me in my attempts to reduce my prescription. i went for an eyetest yesterday and my SPH went down from
-2.75 to -2.00. My family were shocked about the change. My father never believed in what i was trying to achieve but the paperwork proved that the state of the eyes is very changeable dependent on tension and mood of head/eyes.
I was trying to do a mixture of eye relaxation exercises and wearing reading glasses up to now
Well there is. But i don't think it works the same for all the people tho
There are some eye "exercises" that i used to do before i went to the doctor to check if my myopia level had decreased at all. At first he said there is no such thing as eye exercises. Then he admited there is such thing as eye muscle exercises after he tested my eye vision and noticed that my myopia level had decreased for like 0.25 but my astigmatism has increased for 0,25.
Hello i am a doctor. And i have something to say Myopia may make you walk funny, have bad hand writing, you can not see good if you have any of these symtoms vist a docter. that is all thank you
i think it is not a matter of prveneting myopia it has to cured rather than prvented i think medical technolgy does not choose to cure us but rather prefer to keep us unaware or the availble alternative to poor vision forever and stop the greedy medical industry
omg. I think I have this since I use Glasses now. I started using distance glasses since summer (in about July) 2006. before that we went to check my eyes and noticed I needed glasses. Well, that was when I was like 12 years old. Now, Im 15. well, I think it was caused what you are saying since it may had started to happen to me before I went to an Eye exam.
i believe the mdical community can end this tragdy by creating very simple and yet effective cure but the greedy medical industry is still stubborn to earn more funds and more money of goverment donors and patint themselves abd i think more can be done because prevention is inveatible so there has to be something than can done i hope there will be a cure very soon god help you
Yeh, I think that's the case but I'm nearsighted also.. when I cross my eyes I see better but not perfect.. I think what is said on the vid is BS .. atleast if couldnt be the case in all nearsightedness.. Though wearing glasses without needing them can sometimes temporally change the eyesight for worse.. not wearing glasses for severe nearsightedness is not a functional remedy..

No seriously, if work nowadays involves close sight then is it even functional to have normal sight, which will cause eye strain for 8 hours a day?
That's not important anyway since this is all a folk tale, not science.
Why is it people who get one surgery or buy one pair of glasses in their adult life find that sufficient for the rest of lifetime?
Why is it huge myopia is found among some children in whom it is reduced later on in life?

The causes of myopia are still not clear! someone says that are liquid retentions that make the eyes longer other is just the muscles surround the eyes who make it longer.
In both cases a treatment could be possible if they only wanted to cure the problem
but lenses, glasses and lasers are the industry for this who treat only the symptoms.
they are experimenting eye drops to shrink the eyes....but who knows when it will be ever approbed!

I was born with bad eyesight, so does that mean I was reading books as a fetus? Truthfully I'm doubtful of this "myopia prevention".

No, hearing loss is comparable to retina burn.
And it is not safer or healthier to be far sighted.

What is retina burn?

I meant snow blindness.
Condition where sight is impaired as effect of exposure to large amount of light.

If the eye is dialated, does that mean you might have myopia?
thelightblue32 1 year ago
I mean if you did NOT go to the doctor or dialate your own eyes!
thelightblue32 1 year ago

@MarcusCMarcellus What strength reading glasses did you use?

hi i just wanted to thank the creator of this video for helping me in my attempts to reduce my prescription. i went for an eyetest yesterday and my SPH went down from
-2.75 to -2.00. My family were shocked about the change. My father never believed in what i was trying to achieve but the paperwork proved that the state of the eyes is very changeable dependent on tension and mood of head/eyes.
I was trying to do a mixture of eye relaxation exercises and wearing reading glasses up to now
dinkaDPB 2 years ago 2
Is it really irreversible? There must be some way to retrain the muscles.
HenryVIIIsCodPiece 2 years ago 3
you're right there must be a way!

@HenryVIIIsCodPiece
Now i just wear lenses lol

i think it is not a matter of prveneting myopia it has to cured rather than prvented i think medical technolgy does not choose to cure us but rather prefer to keep us unaware or the availble alternative to poor vision forever and stop the greedy medical industry

omg. I think I have this since I use Glasses now. I started using distance glasses since summer (in about July) 2006. before that we went to check my eyes and noticed I needed glasses. Well, that was when I was like 12 years old. Now, Im 15. well, I think it was caused what you are saying since it may had started to happen to me before I went to an Eye exam.

i believe the mdical community can end this tragdy by creating very simple and yet effective cure but the greedy medical industry is still stubborn to earn more funds and more money of goverment donors and patint themselves abd i think more can be done because prevention is inveatible so there has to be something than can done i hope there will be a cure very soon god help you

it's due to the shape of the eyeball which can just grow in the wrong shape
scifirocks 2 years ago
Yeh, I think that's the case but I'm nearsighted also.. when I cross my eyes I see better but not perfect.. I think what is said on the vid is BS .. atleast if couldnt be the case in all nearsightedness.. Though wearing glasses without needing them can sometimes temporally change the eyesight for worse.. not wearing glasses for severe nearsightedness is not a functional remedy..
