Earl's playing on this has stood the test of time. Very few banjo players now can even begin to play this song as fast and as smooth as this. These young guys nowadays that think that more is better should take lessons here.
The boys are all real young here and they are on fire! I like the way Lester slids out of the way after the intro. The thing about Earl is that he didn't have much to follow. He had to make all those licks up on the banjo. That's what makes him the best ever.
Ok. These guys are the best - now check out "The Out Of Town Boys" videos. They sound a lot like these guys esp. on I'm Waiting To Hear You Call Me Darling.
this is what i'm talkin about. great video thanks for posting it. ralph stanley is a great musician, but flatt could flatt tear it up matter of preferance i suppose. thanks again for the vid.
there will never be another one like earl scruggs may he live to be a hunderdyears old or more i love the man i hope to get to meet him one day god bless him billie conner
For God's Sake - stop this shit about criticising good ole Earl !! He's simply the best 5-string picker there ever was - no contest. You ego-strung fools. Just accept it - there'll never be another Earl Scruggs.
Thanks for posting this. litobrancha has no idea what he's talking about. Stanley's playing was stilted and unimaginative. Don't get me wrong, I love Ralph, played shows with him, but had an awful tone from playing right on the bridge, as well as very little of anything but forward rolls. Anyway I loved Randy Lynn Rag, named after Earl's son.
Stanley couldn't carry Earl's banjo. I'll give it to the Stanley Bros. for great music and ballads, but Ralph wasn't a 10th the banjo player Earl was, couldn't keep his picks from clacking on the bridge he played so close to it. As for the best, neither was Don Reno, good player but never up to the standards of the MAN. Earl was, and still is the best. Even in a world of Bela Flecks and Scott Vestals, they'll tell you who's the King! Scruggs Rules.
You just pwned that guy hardcore....2 weeks ago. Could you tell me about some other cool Bluegrass that I could listen to? Flatt and Scruggs is all I had, but then I left the CD in a rental car.
I have to comment here...Growing up in coal mining region of WV in the '50's, this was one of the programs my dad watched on the black and white TV (we, the first to have such a TV!). My dad was a gifted musician himself, and I could never appreciate his admiration for Bluegrass till later in life. Thanks for posting this rare video!
To flatpikinguitar: I cannot recall Lester ever "cutting loose" on the guitar. But Earl does some real fancy guitar picking on songs like "I'm On My Way to Canaan Land." Lester was not a solo instrumentalist. His contribution was his voice.
I don't believe Earl has ever played a bowtie inlaid banjo, it's always his trusty old Granada! While Bill Monroe was indeed the father of bluegrass F&S took it to a whole new level.
See! He really did actually play all of that....no friggin 'lectric machinery, no computer gizzmos, no "dudes" messing with knobs in the studio, no double or triple tracking, just a good mastertone, fingers and a bluegrass brain. Earl Rules, Bluegrass Rules, Keep on Pickin!
These guys used to play at my grandparent's house with my grandpa before he passed away. Just amazing talent these men have. Their music is tradition in our family!
this is probably the best video i've ever seen on youtube. early josh graves at his best on the dobro, and i don't need to tell you how great scruggs/flatt banjo is. and you gotta love the short tie on uncle josh graves!
Hey Errordisk, I don't mean to dispute your word or anything, but I belive Earl's Granada may have had the bow-tie fingerboard between 1950(?)-1958, having a mahogany neck until the late 60s.
I hope I didn't offend you, I'm just pointing that out.
This was the 1st time I've -seen- Earl pick this song, & not being a 5 picker, I always had to guess, & now confirmed-he worked the tuners in this song. & also something to point out out how polished they were ducking in & out w/their instrumental breaks-true professionals! RIP Uncle Josh-the best Dobro player there ever was!
Oh Man I Love This One Just Wish The Quality Was Better Earl Is Really Smokin The Banjer & Uncle Josh Graves Man What A Dobro Player This One Is A Real Classic!!!!!
Earl Scruggs: A self taught, undisputable banjo MASTER! As well as one of the most (if not THE MOST) influential musicians in bluegrass history (maybe even more than Bill Monroe!) Earl is the guy that has brought so much to bluegrass, and Flatt and Scruggs was, quite possibly, the best bluegrass duo ever!
I agree ! You hear Flatt & Scruggs you just drop everything and enjoy their pickin. They were the best ever in bluegrass. Well, in fact bluegrass was founded by them along with Bill Monroe.
Ohhh wait a minute...I found the site (Sonny's site...duhhhhhh) I've seen those before except I've seen ones that go only up and not down lol. they look pretty similar. Yes they are ugly!
You might know this, but Earl co-invented special tuning pegs that detune precisely a whole tone or semi tone. You can still buy them and even put them on a guitar.
Folks, Lester Flatt does not play the fiddle. Earl Warren plays the fiddle. Flatt is lead singer, and the one who introduced this.
