  • Folks, Lester Flatt does not play the fiddle. Earl Warren plays the fiddle. Flatt is lead singer, and the one who introduced this.

  • hell yeah.

  • Going to see Earl in concert in August

  • earl scruggs f***s it up. in a GOOD way.

  • Earl's playing on this has stood the test of time. Very few banjo players now can even begin to play this song as fast and as smooth as this. These young guys nowadays that think that more is better should take lessons here.

  • Man they are SOOOO damn good ^_^!!!!

  • Earl's still the best, there's just something about his playing that nobody has been able to match.

  • Earl wrote this and named it for one of his sons.

  • Woah, look at Uncle Josh and his rockstar moves! :) I love Flatt & Scruggs and all the Foggy Mountain Boys!!!

(Goddamn, Paul Warren!!! How freaking awesome is he!!)

  • Yes, Josh Graves always wanted to be his best and tried different ways to show his skills. Still the best dobro player to ever live. I miss him. :(

  • I Love Earl Scruggs but i cant figure out wether he sold his soul to the devil or he is god himself?

  • Great stuff. But which was was Flatt?

  • The guitar player who did the talking intro.

  • I believe he is on the fiddle.

  • Lester Flatt played the fiddle, Earl Scruggs played the banjo

  • Hey man Lester played guitar and sang lead. Lester never played fiddle to my knowledge

  • Can you please watch and comment on The Flatt and Scruggs?

  • I can play this song on the banjo.

  • Can you please watch and comment on The Flatt and Scruggs?

  • I really love Earl & Lester, but I also loved Josh Graves! Wished there was more of him on good ol' You Tube!

  • Comment removed

  • Practice-practice-practice. And maybe a gift from God as well.

  • I know I play the banjo as well [actually I play anything with strings] I think the strings should have melted, no, EVAPORATED!

  • School's out...

  • I own this song I love this song and I play the banjo.

  • breathtakin'

  • uh, oh boy, them boys know how to hoot and holler!

  • geezus... these boys smoke like the bottom of your souls, really creepy!

  • Dobro player rocks! So does the whole group

  • I dont know how many times I watched this...It`s just amasing!!!

everytime it makes me really happy!!YEEEHAWW!!!

  • listen to that dobro...

  • killin! omg its so fast. well over 200 bpm

  • The boys are all real young here and they are on fire! I like the way Lester slids out of the way after the intro. The thing about Earl is that he didn't have much to follow. He had to make all those licks up on the banjo. That's what makes him the best ever.

  • Ok. These guys are the best - now check out "The Out Of Town Boys" videos. They sound a lot like these guys esp. on I'm Waiting To Hear You Call Me Darling.

  • This is Great

    Thank you for the listing

  • Paul Warren was a great fiddle player

  • Looks like a great time! Pure legends.

  • Go Earl! You da man!

  • I played with Curly Seckler last year at the James Monroe bluegrass festival. He needed a bass player for his set, lucky me!

  • Hey goldFinchStella, there are lots of songs that use the tuners, but I think the one you're thinking of is probably "Earl's Breakdown".

  • this is what i'm talkin about. great video thanks for posting it. ralph stanley is a great musician, but flatt could flatt tear it up matter of preferance i suppose. thanks again for the vid.

  • Thanks a million for posting this! Earl was the greatest...never be another like him.

  • There will never be another Earl Scruggs just like there will never be another Bill Monroe.

  • I love this song

  • you are out of your ever loving mine when you think there is any one out there who can do what earl scruggs can do!

  • there will never be another one like earl scruggs may he live to be a hunderdyears old or more i love the man i hope to get to meet him one day god bless him billie conner

  • For God's Sake - stop this shit about criticising good ole Earl !! He's simply the best 5-string picker there ever was - no contest. You ego-strung fools. Just accept it - there'll never be another Earl Scruggs.

  • Thanks for posting this. litobrancha has no idea what he's talking about. Stanley's playing was stilted and unimaginative. Don't get me wrong, I love Ralph, played shows with him, but had an awful tone from playing right on the bridge, as well as very little of anything but forward rolls. Anyway I loved Randy Lynn Rag, named after Earl's son.

  • Stanley couldn't carry Earl's banjo. I'll give it to the Stanley Bros. for great music and ballads, but Ralph wasn't a 10th the banjo player Earl was, couldn't keep his picks from clacking on the bridge he played so close to it. As for the best, neither was Don Reno, good player but never up to the standards of the MAN. Earl was, and still is the best. Even in a world of Bela Flecks and Scott Vestals, they'll tell you who's the King! Scruggs Rules.

  • You just pwned that guy hardcore....2 weeks ago. Could you tell me about some other cool Bluegrass that I could listen to? Flatt and Scruggs is all I had, but then I left the CD in a rental car.

  • I have to comment here...Growing up in coal mining region of WV in the '50's, this was one of the programs my dad watched on the black and white TV (we, the first to have such a TV!). My dad was a gifted musician himself, and I could never appreciate his admiration for Bluegrass till later in life. Thanks for posting this rare video!

  • does anyone know of a video where you can see lester cut loose on the guitar

  • To flatpikinguitar: I cannot recall Lester ever "cutting loose" on the guitar. But Earl does some real fancy guitar picking on songs like "I'm On My Way to Canaan Land." Lester was not a solo instrumentalist. His contribution was his voice.

  • Earl didn't waste any time, did he? Just started right in picking with no banter.

  • I don't believe Earl has ever played a bowtie inlaid banjo, it's always his trusty old Granada! While Bill Monroe was indeed the father of bluegrass F&S took it to a whole new level.

  • Paul Warren, the God of the Breakdown! I wore a record out learning his version of Sally Goodin. I remember records, do you?

  • I am from ky but i live in england. there is no school like old school god blees 'em all r

  • YEEEEEEUUUUUUU!!!!

  • eeeeehhhaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

  • I think this was filmed before they started removing cocaine from Coca Cola --- And the dobroist had a big swallow of it before he went on stage!!

  • I use a Skruggs/Kieth tuner on my telecaster for drop tuning.

  • no doubt about dat!!

  • See! He really did actually play all of that....no friggin 'lectric machinery, no computer gizzmos, no "dudes" messing with knobs in the studio, no double or triple tracking, just a good mastertone, fingers and a bluegrass brain. Earl Rules, Bluegrass Rules, Keep on Pickin!

  • This talent transcend the county or bluegrass genre and should be classified as 5 stars by any ones measurement.

  • OMG SMOKIN U GOTTA LOVE THIS!!!!!

  • Earl wrote this piece and named it for his son!

  • Sheer genius, unmatched since. Each one a virtuoso and innovator. Detuning the banjo as part of the melody, brilliant!

  • Get the Scruggs/Keith tuners.

  • He is faster than some of the "speed" Metal stuff too!

  • Whats new?

  • Watch earl just before and during uncle josh's solo. you seldom ever see earl grin broadly but josh's dobro playing does that to ya...

    josh defined bluegrass dobro

  • Killer!

  • These guys used to play at my grandparent's house with my grandpa before he passed away. Just amazing talent these men have. Their music is tradition in our family!

  • Brings me home to N. C.

  • which dvd is this?

  • I might need more than tuning pegs I think.

  • I know there is another banjo song that uses the tuning pegs like that but I don't know the name of it. Can anyone help?

  • gooood stuff!

  • Thanks--love that Dobro Guitar .

  • DAMN,Scruggs could burn it up!

  • this is probably the best video i've ever seen on youtube. early josh graves at his best on the dobro, and i don't need to tell you how great scruggs/flatt banjo is. and you gotta love the short tie on uncle josh graves!

  • best bluegrass band ever......

  • Man, I love that Dobro players hat!

    Fun song.

  • Hey Errordisk, I don't mean to dispute your word or anything, but I belive Earl's Granada may have had the bow-tie fingerboard between 1950(?)-1958, having a mahogany neck until the late 60s.

I hope I didn't offend you, I'm just pointing that out.

  • talented fellas

  • No Scruggs... No Grass

  • This was the 1st time I've -seen- Earl pick this song, & not being a 5 picker, I always had to guess, & now confirmed-he worked the tuners in this song. & also something to point out out how polished they were ducking in & out w/their instrumental breaks-true professionals! RIP Uncle Josh-the best Dobro player there ever was!

  • Oh Man I Love This One Just Wish The Quality Was Better Earl Is Really Smokin The Banjer & Uncle Josh Graves Man What A Dobro Player This One Is A Real Classic!!!!!

  • Earl Scruggs: A self taught, undisputable banjo MASTER! As well as one of the most (if not THE MOST) influential musicians in bluegrass history (maybe even more than Bill Monroe!) Earl is the guy that has brought so much to bluegrass, and Flatt and Scruggs was, quite possibly, the best bluegrass duo ever!

  • I agree ! You hear Flatt & Scruggs you just drop everything and enjoy their pickin. They were the best ever in bluegrass. Well, in fact bluegrass was founded by them along with Bill Monroe.

  • Thks error and thks youtube

  • that gave me goosepimples

  • Ohhh wait a minute...I found the site (Sonny's site...duhhhhhh) I've seen those before except I've seen ones that go only up and not down lol. they look pretty similar. Yes they are ugly!

  • Lol I see. So they really don't have a benefit over Scruggs tuners :P

  • this is not effects, all hands, way to go, too much fun

  • This is just great! This is good for bluegrass loving norwegians like me! :)

  • What a Great video. How tough is that detune. I picked up an original album of these guys and now I'm hooked. Thanks

  • You might know this, but Earl co-invented special tuning pegs that detune precisely a whole tone or semi tone. You can still buy them and even put them on a guitar.

  • Keith or D tuners I know...I wanna get a set for my banjo.

  • Earl's the KING...hands down!

  • Man! What a great vintage video cut!!!!

This shows them at their peak!! Gotta love the way those guys worked a mic!

    Thanks for sharing this!

  • Thanks a lot, I sure love this band! I own the full video and love it :)

  • If this doesn't give you goosebumps, you have no soul

  • Classic! Thanks for sharing.

  • thanks much...
