  • Does the lift go to G,2and2M

  • Its their words not mine , in a e,mail reply from them after I asked them what happened to it and why it wasent there any more .

I suspect it wasent in keeping with their "modern image"they were trying to project when they refurbished the museam ,They could have easely restored it to it original glory and made it a focal point and been more long sighted in the fact the longer it stayed there the more interesting it would become.

Yes I do remember the big goods lift with bi parting doors .

  • You missed out on the old lift shaft up the main stair case where the pendulam denoteing the rotation of the world now hangs ,this was occupied by a late 18'century attendant controlled bottom drive Marryat and Scott with round guides and midbar picket gates. It was scrapped as it had become delapedated and an eye sore ,and wasent "worthey of historical importance"you can still see whare it used to run last time I was there the landing gates still remained.

  • @keithhuddy An old Marryat & Scott is never an eye sore and is very historicly inportant.

I am suprised that the science musem did not want to keep their old lift. They have also replaced their vertical door lift.

  • @benobve I wonder what BM stood for in the last set of lifts on 3:32

  • @Cazkumali basement mezzanene

  • You know In the second set of lifts which lift talked

  • Cool, I was in 1 of those lifts that too public floor to floor for exhibitions. Some one in the lift selected a floor when we got to this floor the door did not open. People in the lift were beginning to worry so I pulled the doors open and let them out and found a sign elsewhere indicating that the floor was closed off to public.

    Good Video tour

  • I've been to the Science Museum quite a few times but so far I've only been in the lifts with the motor room in the basement. Last time I went with my family, we were going to go in the glass lifts but my mum and dad decided that it wasn't worth waiting and we used the stairs- even though it was about 3 floors

  • The glass hydrualics and the small/large lifts have all been modernised since i last saw them. The large lift used to be used as a good lift (as well as for passengers), the rear door was a manual goods lift door, which has been replaced with a normal automatic door. I remember when the Basement driven lifts were first installed, there were previously escalators where the lifts now are. These used to be my favourite lifts when i was younger, i loved watching the machine room downstairs.

  • I remember going in the old small/large lifts with the manual goods door (I think they were otis)

but I never saw the escalators where the kone lifts are today

  • The Kones were installed 15+ years ago I think, when the baement area they serve was opened up to the public. Is the really large Goods lift still there nearly opposite the Kones?

  • I did see the large goods lift

I couldn't go in it as it needed a key

all of the staff would not let me in. one of them said he would get the sack if he let me in!

  • Shame. Still excellent video tour!

  • @benobve How many floors high was the first lift that you went in

  • @Cazkumali 5 (LG, G ,1, 2, 3)
