I Just can't get enough of these guys, that guitar is so damn hot. They are just as much fun to watch as to listen to. This is my favorite find on Youtube ever !
I've seen & heard many blokes play guitar & I'm not impressed too easily with yer Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton wana bees. However, Wilko has a style of his own & is one of the best guitarists in the world. Another is Pete Townshend. both a great inspiration. Dr Feelgood was Wilko & Lee. I'm very impressed ! !
This is f*cking sublime. Totally amazing. Wilko is Wilko. And Lee looks like someone you don't wanna meet in a dark alley. When i see this, i come to realize how "watered-out" the music businnes have become. I mean. Take any Kanye-Bla-Bla- and bla and compare it with this. Silly.
Brilliant Dr Feelgood documentary 'Oil City Confidential' plus The Wilko Johnson Band live at Komedia Bath, UK on 16 Nov 2010 - part of the Bath Film Festival. Can't wait!
Lee Brilleaux's suit ... this classic concert (various songs from it available on YT) looks like the end of a tour--a hometown gig?--and quite great. I saw Wilko live the other week, still moving round the stage pretty intensely, though no leaps alas. Been watching him periodically since the first time I was blwon away by the Feelgoods in the pre-punk period, St Andrew's Hall Norwich, 1975 or so. Still got the poster.
Wilko Johnson plays the guitar as if he is playing it to it's limit's OUT OF CONTROL but just add's to the beat of his fast brilliant guitar playing. A brilliant punk band with great musicians. Wilko Johnson best Bass player ever. As amygurl63 Wilko & Lee were the act of rock 'n' roll.
Wilco Johnson is fucking awesome! How keeps walking around on stage while playing those rhythm & lead riffs at once, its just amazing! Some day, i too will walk back and forth onstage while brushing my knuckles agains a telecaster.. Someday...
@ JerkJiggler - Wilco based his combination lead and rhythm style on Mick Green of The Pirates, he actually mentions this in Oil City Confidential, although I think Mick used a pick.
@Crewedaddy I too watched Oil City Confidential and I think Wilko said he only used his fingers as he kept snapping the plectrums...but an original style of guitar playing. The bit about how he used his "stare" at the audience to make them feel they were being watched was good....an intelligent bloke that Wilko!

How the f**k have I only just gotten into Dr Feelgood?! Dscovered then the other day when I saw a trailer for oil city confidential, I've now spent around 4 hours watching all the youtube footage I can! Have to say, that Wilco's style of playing is pretty damn unique, are there any other guitarists like him?!
Know what'cha mean! I had heard their name back in the 70's, but here in the U.S. Midwest, they NEVER got any radio play, nor do I ever recall them playing in the area (Kansas City, Missouri). But after reading about them in British Mags MOJO and UNCUT recently, and like you, seeing the trailer for the film, I ended up watching a bunch of these clips and this band is simply incredible. Wilko is indeed a unique guitarist.
@JerkJiggler No I don't think so, quite unique, no plectrum! A real innovator. The films good as well. Oh the wonders of you tube, we all keep finding stuff to watch, better than telly!
Probably nobody else like him but he was a major influence on a young Paul Weller. Check out The Jam's "In The City" album and Wilko's influence can be heard throughout, Weller was a big fan of Wilko at the time.
I saw Dr Feelgood about 1980 and they were a great UK R&B band ... enjoy a good honest band with a "down the pub" atmosphere. I never forget hearing Back in the Night for the first time about 1976 and thinking wow !! They still sound as good as I remember them.
This is awesome! Wilko Johnson is Rock & Roll personified. It's sad that when most think of Dr. Feelgood, they think of the crappy Motley Crue song, and not this underrated Rock and Roll steamroller! I can't wait to see the Fellgood Documentary, OIL CITY CONFIDENTIAL ,on DVD, as it may never end up on a movie screen here in the States outside of New York and L.A.

Shockingly good. I'm really just totally speechless...I read a recent article in Mojo where some bandmember said they shouldn't really be compared to the punks because they could wipe the floor with any later punk band, and I tend to agree.
Also! Lee Brilleaux looks like he's been in the pub all day and is ready to beat the sh*t out of the crowd. At the Stadium the crowd had usually also been drinking all day. No wonder it kicked off! I still have the press cuttings from the next day. Great Times Great Bands. AC/DC in 1976 anyone?
This'll make your socks roll up and down! Brilliant. Exciting. Wilco was such an inspiration for me. Saw them several times in Liverpool including at The Stadium 26 Jan 1976 when the hall was wrecked! This song plus 'I Can Tell' are my favourites.
If you like this check out the new Feelgoods film that is released at the London Film Festival on Friday (16th October) or Wilko's "Back in the Day" with Steve Hooker boy can those guys play
Hi Tubeman, Wilcos Amp back then was the then quite popular IC-100 by H|H, a solid state 2 x 12" combo amplifier also available as just a head. The model in this vid seems to have its speaker grille removed. Best regards - David
I first saw dr feelgood at m bro in 1975 and i came out 7 foot off the ground , and i still need a dr, when i watch these videos .those where the days!!!
That's the kind of guitar sound I can get behind (not to mention the execution & energy!) Too many "guitar heroes", and I know a few, are totally afraid of such a raw bristling tone. They have to hide behind a flank of stupid, steroidal boost pedals. Not man enough to take it straight up, I suppose!
Wilko, super devine genius nut!!!! Don't get no betta than that!!!! Righteous!!! And Feelgood is so great with his restrained, pentup energy that's always on the verge of exploding but never quite does!!!! Excellent!!!
You had to be there didn't you? I saw them many times...greatest band in the history of R&R. Never seen anything like them, never will again. I did once see a band called the Top Cats...I think? They supported Feelgood at the old Town and Country in Camden...I'm sure it was around 1986 and without Wilko this support band blew Feelgood off stage. Never heard any more about them.
Saw The Feelgoods several times at Friars Aylesbuy, Hemel Pavilion, Queensway hall Dunstable - i've seen a lot of bands as good - i never saw one better!!
Straight friggin' great. When is somebody going to re-issue these great albums? Wilco, Lee and the rest of the band were true groundbreakers and had a sound all their own!
All the albums are available, including an expanded version of Down By The Jetty with alternative versions of songs. There's also a DVD that comes with a live CD, same set as Stupidity more or less, but recorded close-mic'ed. Wilko told me he had to fight to get that LP recorded as if you were hearing it from the crowd, and as we know it sounds great, but now you can hear it the other way! Amazon's got 'em all...
8 november 1975. Thank God this one was filmed and not the concert held the next day, 9 november, Hammersmith Odeon (end of tour) where Wilko had some sort of a nervous breakdown (his words and various reviews of the gig found online) and fucked up the whole gig. Anyhow, this is the best 30 minutes of any concert DVD, period. Find it, folks.
Saw them 75/76. Crowd went fucking mental. Changed my life. In a band right now doing some of their stuff. Same set up as Wilco, Telecaster/ H&H 100 combo, but THAT sound eludes me. They were unique.
Check out some of the Pirates posts on here and see the similarities with Wilco and Mick Greens style.
Wilko didn't do it this way but it does work - if you're using a regular IC100 plug your guitar into the clean channel 'normal' jack socket, then take a short lead from the bright socket next to it and plug the other end into the sustain channel normal socket(sustain switch set to 'on') - hey presto, both channels on at the same time! You can balance up the clean and dirty channels and get a close approximation of Wilko's sound. I've been doing it that way for years!
indeed! I experienced dr F and Wilco's solid senders countless times and you guys who didnt, well I hurt for ya cos its absolutely the truth you missed one of lifes most intense experiences dr F...live...in a pub. Due to licencing restrictions, pubs have never been so cram-packed since and there sure aint been another band as good EXCEPT...Camden [London] has a top notch pub culture and look out for a group called 'The Cubical'...now put the two together and...hmmm?
Fucking brilliant!

They supported Feelgood at the old Town and Country in Camden...I'm sure it was around 1986 and without Wilko this support band blew Feelgood off stage. Never heard any more about them.

I saw them many times at Dingwalls in Camden. What a truly great band and fantastic live. True sons of Canvey! Any footage from their shows there?

There was a period from 1975-76, as this video proves where Dr Feelgood were the best band on the whole fucking planet.
Britain shuld be proud of them!

Straight friggin' great. When is somebody going to re-issue these great albums? Wilco, Lee and the rest of the band were true groundbreakers and had a sound all their own!
lunz31 3 years ago
All the albums are available, including an expanded version of Down By The Jetty with alternative versions of songs. There's also a DVD that comes with a live CD, same set as Stupidity more or less, but recorded close-mic'ed. Wilko told me he had to fight to get that LP recorded as if you were hearing it from the crowd, and as we know it sounds great, but now you can hear it the other way! Amazon's got 'em all...

Wilko uses Gauss (not sure of speeling) speakers in his H&H. I bought a 65 tele on the back of him in 1980. Never looked back since :o)

Due to licencing restrictions, pubs have never been so cram-packed since and there sure aint been another band as good EXCEPT...Camden [London] has a top notch pub culture and look out for a group called 'The Cubical'...now put the two together and...hmmm?

great vid - Lee and Wilko at their very best - thanks for posting

Pharmaceutical Grade Rock N Roll!!! Only prescribed by Dr Feelgood.
Only a handful of bands can live up to that description. I'm lucky to have seen them and it saddens me that so few bands come close these days.
They never sold out to the fundamentals of good, honest live music. Few can claim anything close.
Thanks for sharing this clip :-)
