I have an older version of After Effects (v 5.5) that doesn't have the text tool. I tried your shatter effect method by creating a solid with basic text, but it wouldn't work. I tried importing text from Photoshop and put a luma key on it, that didn't work either. Any idea of how I can create 3D text in my older version of After Effects? Good stuff by the way! :-)

guys if your having trouble with it shattering

make sure you turn all force 1 & 2 options to 0

that way you text will not shatter if your making a movie or is in a clip.

@WoopsyDudes Let me give you a tip. If you go to your Settings for the Shatter Effect, and open up the "Force 1" & "Force 2" Tabs. You can now adjust the Depth, Radius, and Strength. Turn all these to zero, and you're 3D Text will now not explode, but remain as.. well 3D Text. :P If you need any help or questions, please PM Me. :)

No, you can't because it's not really 3D.

Well it's 3d, if you're only going to use this for the text. The problem is that if you need other things to rotate in relation to the text, it doesn't work as this text will appear flat.

I think you can link the rotation to the camera's position, but it would just end up being more of a headache than what you can do otherwise. I'll be linking a Video Response showing what I mean. Thanks for the video :)

Awesome tutorial! This works with PNG files, too! I tried this with a logo and it worked perfectly by duplicating the logo's layer and pretty much doing everything said in this video. Thumbs Up, man!!

To stop the shattering you can also just click white tiles fixed box, as well as keyframe it on & off. Much easier then changing ALL the force settings to 0.

Very good. However, how do I use this in another composition I have started? For some reason when I copy and paste those two layers into the comp im working on, everything disapears...and when I create it in the comp I want I see nothing unless i turn the force to 0 and then the text is all pixelated. for everyone with problems when using this tutorial here are the solutions:

Youre text keeps on shattering? Set all youre "Force" settings to zero

Youre text is seethrough? You forgot to put you're setting "View" on Rendered

You dont want a picture as background? Put the shatter effect to a solid.

for great results, 1 solo out the frame, 2 render frame as file (png) and use the post render option to import, 3 add to timeline and postition where you need it, then apply shatter, drop all forces to zero, 4 adjust camera transforms and use keyframe to animate. easy!
