  • Holy crap I forgot Joe Elmore was on Ch. 13! My dad worked at this station for many years up until the late 80's. This particular newscast not long before I was born.

I actually met Joe Elmore at a grocery store when I was living in Nashville back in 2001. He remembered working with my dad. And yeah I had to chuckle at the "OMG $1 gas!!!" If only it were that cheap again.

  • Everything that is happening now with gas and the flood water of Mississippi river happened back then see nothing has changed except gas is almost $4.00 and I laughed my ass off when the guy said they were trying to beat the river back but the river was winning.

  • OMG!! Look at Joe Elmore!! LOL

Man that takes me back....when the male anchors wore identical jackets and those sets looks absolutely primitive now!

  • lol how funny. You can see Joe Elmore these days on the Speed Channel on Sat mornings doing the show Horsepower TV.

  • Identical blazers - did they also work part-time at Hertz?

  • @MediaWatchDawg Identical blazers. Now that's what I call a team...

  • Fran Fawcett. Man, nobody could stand her at that station. Joe Elmore also hosted PM Magazine in the early 80's. We did a story on the making of that show for cable when I was a student at Memphis State.

  • geez, how many Ford Granadas were at the gas station that day?

  • Joe Elmore strikes a resemblance to Jon Heder in his role in the movie "Blades of Glory" with Will Ferrell

  • Any newscasts showing the removal of office of Ray Blanton?

  • Joe Elmore now hosts "Tennessee Crossroads," which can be seen on local PBS stations across the state.

  • wow, two white guys anchoring a news cast together. you don't see that anymore

  • You will always see two white people anchoring the news, but you don't see two men anchoring the news anymore!

  • What a shocker! Look at that hair! My children were playing around and dug this up and they're seeing that once upon a time I really did have a job. As for Byron, we had a PR softball team that travelled the area and one viewer called Fran "Franch Foster."

    Christopher Peake

  • Very good. Let me know when you can dig up Byron Day and Fran Fawcett.

  • Opening appears to be shot near Poplar Ave. and Colonial, looking East. Bottom of Clark Tower is in the background.

The gas station footage looks like it was at the corner of Highland and Walker, right down the street from the WHBQ studio.

  • Correct; that gas station is just off the campus of the University of Memphis.

  • Wonderful! Thank you for the flashback.

  • nice segue "Aviation officials speculate that Sullivan had enough gas and probably developed engine trouble... but Memphians... may find themselves without enough gas"

  • Do you have any more of this newscast, such as the close?

  • Nope, this is all I have.

  • Well the open looks pretty average for the time, but you'd think they would have stopped using film and perhaps lessened their dependance on still photos by then.

  • And no teleprompter.

    (groan) "literally flooded with sales"

  • Remember this was 1979, nowhere near the age of HDTV we have today. WHBQ's appearance was quite average for that time, it looks to me.

  • Good music, despite the primitive set and still photos.

  • Dollar per gallon gas?! Oh, if only...

  • Isn't that the truth!!!

  • Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't 13 the last station in Memphis to stop using film?

  • Yes, and that's why we didn't watch that channel that much for news. Thank God they were an ABC affiliate back then; we could watch Monday Night Football and the Saturday morning cartoons.
