@hitgu1 I'm no copyright/publishing attorney, but from what I've read about it, technically performers should pay royalties to the composer and publisher when there's a profit being made. Paul's obviously charging money and making a profit to have people hear his performance. So with the Lennon/McCartney catalog I guess Paul pays himself? as co-composer but also has to pay publisher - MJ's estate and Sony/ATV. And it totally applies when he sells DVDs of his concerts.
@bagohotdish correct! I said that in my original post ---> "Just realized...he has to pay royalties for his songs but he probably owns the rights to this song....he owns a great mayority if not all of Buddy Holly's catalogue"
its on DVD- Paul played it at the 1979 Buddy Holly tribute concert where lots of famous musicians gathered to sing Buddy Holly's songs including Paul,Linda,Wings, Bob Dylan, and more

Because MJ (well his estate) and Sony/ATV own the copyrights, Paul has to pay for the right to perform the songs live. In 2006 McCartney said, "You know what doesn't feel very good, is going on tour and paying to sing all my songs. Every time I sing 'Hey Jude,' I've got to pay someone." In this case since Paul owns the copyright to pretty much all of Buddy Holly's songs then he didn't have to pay to perform this song.
@hitgu1 unortunately not. its different if you're a famous musicina playing a concert for money than an amateur playing for fun. even if a grocery store plays someone's music they have to pay them its that comlicated these days. becuase the music industry rights and money and stuff is so complex, that's one reason The Beatles lost rights to many of their songs early on as well as Paul later.
Absolutely incredible evening - I was there too, singing along & dancing. Sir Paul , as always, gave an amazing performance and left his fans with a wonderful night to remember. What an unexpected treat that he added a special tribute to Buddy Holly at the Texas concert. BTW if anyone wonders, he's still got it !
Hey! I was there too and it was me screaming the loudest! Hehe! Not sure if I bothered a couple of people around me from all the screaming. You and I should have been sitting together! Hey! If you are going to see Paul you got to go crazy and have fun and YELL! I love Paul too!!!!!
It's doggone easy to have fun with this one! I was there! Just hours before the concert, I heard Paul practice this song about 4 times. Hearing the practice session and the sound check crew was an added treat. (I was one of the few fans dancing on the balcony with the security staff - who do you think was dancing with us)? (smile)
I love Buddy Holly and I thank Paul for his nod to the Lone STARR State!
Yes, I enjoyed this video as always every Paul's videos ( ESPECIALY THE NEW videos). He is better as ever ! He is the best forever. Thanks so much for sharing.

Why he has to pay??
It cuz of MJ bought rights to most Beatle song.
Or he has really pay for playing Lennon/Macca songs to this asian bitch???
