To all the people hating him right now...get a life..you try and do that and you will fail drastically. The kids got skills. Don't hate the player coz you got no game! SNM Beasties said his bit. Peace out!
The crazy thing is I have never seen a video of him with headphones. He is essentially scratching blind, especially when he has 3 or more tables going
I saw this routine a few years ago when Koala was giving a showcase at the DMC Canadian Finals. No one in the audience (that I know of) had seen this routine yet and just knew him from the underground scratch ...scratch ...scratch mixtape. I think everyone was expecting another take on Run Dmc's 'Peter Piper' or 'Unbelievable' by Biggie like the majority of other deejays that night. When he broke out this routine, it was like witnessing the future of deejaying... a classic moment.
shit, are people still hating on djays for not "making their own stuff"? Do YOU make your own records and play them in front of people? Do you then proceed to tell them "at least, I MADE this, I'm no discjockey, I am a real artist." Well boo-f*ckin-hoo you silly artist-man.
"OW MY ARM!" "And thats what he gets for pretending to be a musician, while he was only a butcher!"
[Much irony and sarcasm is intended here, don't go forumbashing me for it.]
I love when people hate on turntablists because they don't know what it takes to do this. This is as much an artform as the jazz musician or rock star. A lot of DJs grew up listening to classic jazz, rock and hip hop and have formed a style on their own. Dont hate because you dont get it.
The fact is that, controlling this TOOL called the turntable and making it into a musical instrument is as difficult, if not more difficult than training your body to make music with an instrument that is made to make music. Anyone who can't see the artistry in this is obviously not capable of making anything themselves and is content with just talking shit.

i can see that some people are stupid.... koala is scraching, and he became like that only by his scraching, strange n nice and different than others scraching skills. he's scraching not creating music and he has his name only for his scraching:)
my friend, he's created a turntable solo!!! thats somethin you don't usually hear about. this man loves himself ol school new orleans jazz, he plays it well, and this man packs the house everytime he comes down here.
actually, this man just played at preserveration hall with a jazz band who thought he was an amazin musician. new orleans loves this man, give him a chance.
Be nice! Koala is one of the coolest guys I know and if you knew him, you'd say the same. It's easy to observe his insane talent, but he surpasses his talents with much awesomeness and is a serious fan of music. Criticism totally validates his pure genius.
I think everyone here needs to chill. I will say this, if you don't like it, don't goddamn listen to it. If all your going to do is be an arrogant prick, then it's better if you just shut up, nobody here cares what your negative opinion is, if they like it why can't you just leave them alone? It doesn't matter what you say, they're still going to like it and you're just going to come off like some ass hole.
tangneyk. shut up. like kid koala doesn't know jazz. a little bit of info for your ignorant ass. he has been classically trained in piano. and just b/c you can name every big jazz artist doesn't mean shit. jimmy mcgriff, wes montgomery, duke ellignton, wow i must know everyting about jazz. if you don't like turntablism thats fine. but don't act like you know shit about what sounds good. kid koala wouldn't of opened for radiohead if he wasn't good.
You know, being close-minded and reactionary doesn't make you part of any elite (especially when we talk about music, and even more about Jazz), it just shows that you don't know what you're talking about...
Oh, and if a DJ is not a musician (as you said, he's playing something that "isn't even technically an instrument."), then I assume you don't consider conductors as being musicians either?
Tangneyk, you just prove one thing here: you're an ignorant when it comes to "real music". Most (jazz or not) musicians don't share your point of view (check on the net for something called "Keepintime").
Jazz is THE musical style where to use other people's stuff, it's all about it. The difference is the interpretation. This one is one of them, and it swings.
You say it doesn't sound good, well, that's also what was said about Miles Davis. But I guess he's not a "real musician" for you...
As a matter of fact, he would most certainly have. He, like the others, has used existing material, and have played other musicians' creations, which is understandable if you look at the names of the ones he's been playing with.
Instead of proving - again - that you don't know what you're talking about, I would recommend that you have a llok at his biography. And maybe, at a jazz-history book as well...
tangneyk your holding on way to tight to your convictions bro. There are all types of art forms and that is what this is. Thanks for your opinion however don't over state yourself so that you sound like a hater.
Why is it so bad to be a "hater"? There is no Quality. It doesn't sound good. Why am I labeled the jerk? Someday (hopefully) people who defend this, Brittany Spears, and Coca Cola will be labeled the jerks.

Oh, and for the record, you can check peoples ages by clicking on their screen name. Just a tip ;)
Nothing against you anyway... But you, of all people should know that different people like different music. Myself, I consider this not a work of art, but something this guy has worked very VERY hard at perfecting, and I can appreciate that.

The guy has quite a bit of skill, especially to be playing jazz on a turntable like that at all. I never thought I'd see the day when someone bitched about a turntablists "swing" being off when they're freestyling jazz on something that isn't even technically an instrument.
Why don't you go find some little kids and critique them while they bang on pots and pans, asshat.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It takes a lot of skill to be "playing jazz on a turntable like that"? How sad: To work that hard and sound so terrible.
He's got a recording of a "swing" rhythm section 'backing' him, and he's 'freestyling' (whatever that means) jazz, so he should swing. Especially if they're using other peoples' work--and not playing something that "isn't even technically an instrument."
Are you sure, that he's only "using other peoples' work"? Maybe he just took some of their samples, and created his own "backing swing rhythm section" (like band called Skalpel does! - look it up, really worth it)?
Don't be such a jerk and try be more open-minded. I am no big fan of "electric jazz", but I do find it entertaining and just fun.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Using samples is using someone else's work! Christ, I don't even do this shit and have a better grasp of what it is than you guys.
Why am I being a jerk? All you guys can do is say how great this is because it's so "groundbreaking" or some bullshit. Not one of you have said it SOUNDS great. Because it doesn't.
by "sample" i mean one particular sound. Like one note played by trumpet/piano/guitar. Many of this kind of artists use those "samples". So its like u would say, that Mozart used someone else's work, because he played same notes as his predecessors.
There is a proverb in polish language: "O gustach sie nie dyskutuje", meaning: "It's pointless to argue about tastes". I like it, you don't - it's ok, as long as we can discuss with no hate.
sampling is as old as music itself, it just hasnt been done the way hiphop artists have done it.
hiphop has moved sampling into literally "cutting and pasting", (with some editing in between). before this sampling was still very common, only artists would hear a base line/drum pattern/guitar rift, and copy it themselves... either way, its still what YOU would call "using someone elses work".
DJing isnt just about mixing records and making music for dancing. In a club situation maybe yes, but Kid Koala is displaying scratching and mixing as an art form. He is exploring the possibilities and playing with the potential outside of its original context. This is a new(ish) direction for this type of music and not to be confused with other artists using the same tools to provide already established sounds.
who ever thinks this is crap and the song is crap, is mentally challenged, and close minded. kid koala is an amasing musician, and id like to hear any of the shitty people you listen to do better. my two cents

Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis, Dave Douglas, Kenny Wheeler, Nicholas Payton, Wynton Marsalis, Clifford Brown, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Hargrove, Tom Harrell, Lew Soloff, Tomasz Stanko, Tim Hagans, Louis Armstrong... Just to name a few.
Hahhaah this stuff is DAM hard!!! Had a friend show me how to scratch... it took me half an hour just to find the dam beat!!! Yeaaaa.... look at my bad self!
It's not really shitty, it's really cool if you get out of the mind set that all DJ's need to do hip hop type things. Check out Kid's "Moon river" for an example. Djing is all about expression and failure to understand that undermines the entire culture and the music.
i get djing... and I understand it is hard, at the same time I understand that I wouldn't wanna listen to this more than once... no offence to you or him, just saying that a dj should give u something to dance to...
kid koala is at the ottawa jazz this weekend, didnt get a chance to go but there are some damn fine acts there aside from the kid, inc. the white stripes and kanye west(not a huge fan of kanye's) and i hear the roots were going to possibly make a guest appearance-wish i could have been there.
K, why are you always here complaining? You've commented on this video so many times, it's like you're constantly here waiting for someone to say something positive so you can try to twist it into a burn. Lame.
i'll second that - if you don't like it, why do you bother listening to it over and over while you belittle other people for doing just that? nothing better to do, maybe?
he's awesome. saw him open for Rabbit in the Moon in 2001. blew me away. much better than some asshole clapping his hands waiting for a four-on-the- floor beat to drop out so he can crossade to another record.
btw kid koala is a fuckin genius, this guy has wicked flow

Why don't you go find some little kids and critique them while they bang on pots and pans, asshat.

That's what I've been doing.
Now go back to playing/listening to "Guitar Hero"--which is pretty much equivalent to this shit--and leave the music to the musicians.
tangneyk 4 years ago
dude, chill out.

Using samples is using someone else's work! Christ, I don't even do this shit and have a better grasp of what it is than you guys.
Why am I being a jerk? All you guys can do is say how great this is because it's so "groundbreaking" or some bullshit. Not one of you have said it SOUNDS great. Because it doesn't.
tangneyk 4 years ago
oh, c'mon!
by "sample" i mean one particular sound.
Oh - and it sounds great. :D

THIS SOUNDS GREAT!

sampling is as old as music itself, it just hasnt been done the way hiphop artists have done it.
hiphop has moved sampling into literally "cutting and pasting", (with some editing in between). before this sampling was still very common, only artists would hear a base line/drum pattern/guitar rift, and copy it themselves... either way, its still what YOU would call "using someone elses work".

Hahhaah this stuff is DAM hard!!! Had a friend show me how to scratch... it took me half an hour just to find the dam beat!!! Yeaaaa.... look at my bad self!
IamArriK 4 years ago
I appreciate the fact that scratching is hard, but why choose a shitty song to scratch?
mattydub1 4 years ago
It's not really shitty, it's really cool if you get out of the mind set that all DJ's need to do hip hop type things. Check out Kid's "Moon river" for an example. Djing is all about expression and failure to understand that undermines the entire culture and the music.
fkenjoi 4 years ago 3
i get djing... and I understand it is hard, at the same time I understand that I wouldn't wanna listen to this more than once... no offence to you or him, just saying that a dj should give u something to dance to...
mattydub1 4 years ago
I disagree. A DJ isn't just there for the sole reason of providing dancing music. Anyone can do that.

kid koala is at the ottawa jazz this weekend, didnt get a chance to go but there are some damn fine acts there aside from the kid, inc. the white stripes and kanye west(not a huge fan of kanye's) and i hear the roots were going to possibly make a guest appearance-wish i could have been there.

K, why are you always here complaining? You've commented on this video so many times, it's like you're constantly here waiting for someone to say something positive so you can try to twist it into a burn. Lame.
fionamacgillivray 4 years ago
i'll second that - if you don't like it, why do you bother listening to it over and over while you belittle other people for doing just that? nothing better to do, maybe?
monnymc 4 years ago
he's awesome. saw him open for Rabbit in the Moon in 2001. blew me away. much better than some asshole clapping his hands waiting for a four-on-the- floor beat to drop out so he can crossade to another record.
