oh, I loved this version of the final re-capitulation. It was inventive, virtuosic, and galvanizing. It makes the standard version seem plain. It's great.
Take Rachmaninov for example, when you hear him play his own compositions, they are far from what's on the sheet music. Take the middle part of the G minor prelude, middle section, he roles the chords on the right hand. I don't see that on the sheetmusic. The composer has the "right" to change his own works at will, the dilemma is whether a pianist has the "right" to change other composers' music. Like I mentioned - with Liszt I tend to lean towards - YES.
Nothing is missing. It takes great skill to play this composition and make it seem "easy". I don't know if I agree with the improvisations, but if I were a betting man, which I am not, I would bet my money that Liszt improvised at every performance of his works. With Liszt it's ok, it's almost as if he wants us to. Look at the rhapsodie#2 - he actually notes that we improvise a cadenza right?
I don't think Liszt would mind! He'd like it. Beethoven would probably kill you if you changed his work.
He definitely seems so relaxed while he's playing this monster of a piece... And that wildly flaying right thumb of his is great to watch... And, of course, I'd give him first prize for any dead composer look a like competition... He looks exactly like the old oil paintings
I wouldn't say this is the best recording of the piece, nor it's better than Kissin's. Gekic has his own sound, but those little improvs make the piece nasty. Kissin definitely plays it better than Gekic, and if some of you want to hear the real shit, listen to Cziffra's performance. No one plays Liszt's works better than the amazing Georgy Cziffra.
@timmer7000 You are wrong...check this out again. It is MUCH better than Kissin, in every way. Not that Kissin's performance is bad. He is excellent pianist, and a honest one at that(which is rare today), but this is light years away from kissin...another level
@timmer7000 I disagree. Listen again. Gekic appears much more at ease and plays with more force. Everything seems to flow nicely and his tonal quality is definitely superior.
I dont see why people are so dogmatic over the original interpretation I enjoyed the embellishments and IMHO Ive watched a few other performers videos before this one and this performance out shines all the others 10 to 1 ;)
I don't know whether he looks like Hermoine or Hagrid. What do you think? :I

@09273212731 I think he's one of the best Liszt performers ever, so while listening to him I don't have to think about it.

If you think this is amazing, you HAVE to watch Josh Wright play La Campanella on two grand pianos! It is incredible.
