  • Im a grad from the class of 1982 from RTHS I was born on chunute AFB it is so sad to see all of chunte to go down hill,,,but I rememebr these planes being out there,,,

  • Nice video. I didnt think that they still had aircraft for the museum at chanute. A lot of money invested for new chow hall fac. just before they closed down the base.

  • Lived there from 87-89 and this is exactly how i remember it.

  • I was also stationed at Chanute AFB at the end of October 66 and 1967 in which I got discharged. I worked in food service delivering food to the five dinning halls and also the bakery. I was from the Supply field and working in food service was different. I sure did gain weight. I feel teary eyed when I see the base now and thinking back the way it use to be.

  • Nice plane shots. I actually saw that B52 land at Chanute in 73 or it might have been 74 when i was there TDY. I later went on to be a pilot and actually flew the AT6 but I was born too late. My real love would have been to fly the F104 Widowmaker. Just ended my career as a B777 Captain. I still miss Chanute. My father was even there in the 40's...Thanx Again

  • My mom's mom was in the Air Force (he served in WWII and the Korean War) and she was born on the base.

I'm glad my old home videos brought back nostalgia for you!

  • was there in 88/89 in speical purpose vehicle mech.had lot of fun met a lot of good people.marty olson from NY where are you.

  • I was at Chanute in May of 88. This brings back a lot of memories. Thanks

  • I spoke with people who still live there yesterday. All of base housing has been torn down. I would love to have seen my old house again.

  • @LisaSalemie The base housing has not been torn down.

  • @LisaSalemie Please come back and look around. Base housing was not torn down. It has been sold in various ways, one unit at a time, all of Cantonement, half a duplex, etc. Chapman Courts, next to the IGA, where my wife's family lived, has been torn down, but housing on the base is alive and beautiful. You should see how some people have renovated those houses into $100K homes. It's the base buildings themselves that are being torn down...People Center, Civil Engineering.

  • Where did all this outside display go? I went last year and a few planes were outside but not like this.

  • @osgood54 Some went to Wright-Patterson in Dayton, some went to the Smithsonian, a few stayed here. The B-52's were dismantled during the Reagan years.

  • Was an air force brat 69-81 graduated rths, thanks for the pics of the planes!

  • My mom graduated from RTHS during that time period!

  • I graduated in 1979

  • My husband was in from 84 to 88. He worked on the base after the closure until his job moved to Texas in 93. This video of Chanute and Rantoul is soooo fun to watch! I used to take my children to see the planes. The one thing with your video is sooo accurate! THE WIND...I DO NOT MISS IT! Great show!

  • Was one of the people that closed the base in 93. Instructor in Grissom Hall (Air Launched Cruise Missile course),White Hall (EP & CAMS) and LE Augmentee during mid 85 to mid 93. Terrible to see the shape of some of the base now, falling apart and abandoned.

  • was an air force brat there in the early 70's. loved it. too bad it is defunct. lived at 1319B Talbott Rd, but now all the names of the streets have changed. we had to wear an nco patch on our swimsuits and there were these cool swivel seats on the golf course. good memories!

  • I also lived on Talbott Rd...from about 1978-1980!

  • I was at Chanute from Feb 1983-May 1983 to become a firefighter. Thanks for the great memories!

  • I was at Chanute from July-September of 1983. Attended the Fuels Specialist course, just retired from the Reserves in November.

    God Bless!

  • My(future at the time)wife went to Chanute in fall if 1984 to become a firefighter. After 20+ years 5 job changes (to include First Sgt) and a few activations, she retired from the NY ANG in 2005. God Bless!

  • I forgot that they moved all the static displays to a field. I enjoyed it better when the planes were scattered all over the base and on the apron. Thanks for sharing.
