i was also very close to the explosion, i remember the end and seeing people running away and ambulances quickly showing up. And also seing them on the floor with blood, surronded by paramedics. It was sad how something happened for people who just came to watch a freakin firework show.

The reason people got hurt was the authorities and crew allowed the crowd to get too close. Accidents happen when you are dealing with explosives. That's why there are regulations that state safe distances for spectators. Those regulations were not followed and you can see the results. How do I know? I read the reports after the accident.

I am glad I wasn't there this year. I was in Ocean City. I have been going to the Vienna fireworks for almost 30 years now. Next year, IF I go I will sit way way way far away. That is really too bad that happened. It's a shame more couldn't have been done to prevent accidents like this.

I noticed it immediately but my dad and I just assumed it was part of the act. We had no idea about the injuries until we heard about it the news the next day..

My friend was right next to those people, but thank God she didn't get hurt!

I was at this!! I think it was the scariest moment of my life. It was bloody and so scary when I saw people getting hit. I was very close to someone who's leg caught on fire. It was gushing blood! Very, very, very scary.

The incident that occurred is very tragic and the only way to have prevented it from happening is to have not used the boxes. The crew did everything necessary to safely setup and execute the fireworks display and cannot be blamed for a defective product.

These boxes come prepackaged from China. These fireworks boxes are basically

"open and shoot" style. There is no other setup required. However, the Vienna crew went above and beyond what was required by using sandbags to assist in securing the boxes (not a requirement). The Vienna site was inspected by both the Fairfax Fire Marshall's Office and the ATF and successfully passed.

Essentially one shell exploded without leaving the mortar tube. This basically blew the box apart leaving the remaining shells still in the tubes to go in whatever direction the tubes were now laying....in the case of Vienna....several were shot into the crowd resulting injury.

There are two types of fire works that were used at the Vienna show....one in which the crew puts the rack together and loads the shells individually. The second was a prepackaged box of fireworks - 25 shells each. This box is a cardboard box loaded with 25 mortar tubes and 25 shells. These tubes are surrounded with several metal bands and other mechanisms to keep the tubes in place. This is the type of firework that malfunctioned and injured the spectators.

A brief explanation of what happened - being a pyrotechnican working a show in the area (not the Vienna Show) a similar incident happened at our location as a result of manufacturing defect in which a shell exploded in the "finale box" and the remaining shells were launched in the direction of our crew.

i was there towards the right side of this video, and one firework went into the crowd. about 6-11 people were injured, and 2 of those were critical. Most of the injured people were infants to 11 year old

I was about 10 feet in front of where it exploded. First I saw the fireworks exploding on the ground, then I saw the mortar heading right toward us. I was holding my 7 month old and I dropped to the ground. Everyone was running in every direction. It was unbelievably scary. We were sitting in the grass on the corner of Locust and Center St. (caddy corner to left field of Waters Field). The incident happened to the left of us. If you watch the video again you can see at the 1:17 time stamp, a fire work shoot across the ground to the left, and explodes at the 1:20 mark. I am pretty sure that was the one that injured the audience.

I was against the wall of the firestation behind the first baseline right after the dugout ends so I saw the whole thing. We saw one shoot under the fence to the softball field, one at the backstop, and one towards us that blew up before it hit the chainlink fence. When they first started exploding without shooting anywhere it looked like a box blew up, I've heard the finale is set up so that they all sit in a box together with different fuses
