I Know This Is A Great Way To Prevent Death But Surelly The Dad Could Phoned An Ambulance While The Mum Was Crying Over Her Little Girl And The Woman Stopped Her From Dying
whilst some first aid skills may be 'obvious' it may be that when you are faced with a highly charged emotional situation such as this that you will wish you'd had the training - to give you confidence that you were doing the right thing.
The best employers are taining more of their people than they absolutely have to, so maybe one day more than 5% of people will be sure what to do when faced with an emergency like this.
Brilliant video...... Ive been a member of st John since 2006 and have learned loads of first aid skills..... I would recommend joining..... Its great
Thank God I just got my First Aid certificate yesterday with St John Ambulance :D First Aid and CPR should be made mandatory by law for all to undertake in case of emergencies like this, Hundreds of people die from simple incidents such as choking, poison, animal bites etc which can be easily managed or prevented from causing death through a simple 2 day course, because many people think "That could never happen to someone I know" which sadly for many are incorrect
yes exacly what kind of idiot wud just stand there and say i dunno what as if he dosent even know nor bother too realise that he should either do mouth too mouth or hit her on the back 3 times
@charlieiscool1000 >.< You don't do mouth to mouth when someone's choking, 'cause that pushes whatever they choked on further down their throat. You can do mouth to nose, though :/
Fantastic site specific advert, really good use of audience engagement. Startling and yet not patronising. Should have left the text number up longer though as people's phones are not to hand in the cinema.
I had to help a guy once who was chocking on a bit of bread which was stuck in his wind pipe, from my St John's days many moons ago, I got behind the chap push his head forward clamped my hads tight under his rib cage and jerked up hard throwing the bread up and out of his mouth, poor guy was nearly out of it!! Worked though and got a free beer..........
Brilliant. I love it, I hope it makes people think about either joining St John or attending a first aid course. It's never too late to learn first aid.
Lisa Yates, Cadet Leader, SJA Heaton Park, Greater Manchester
We’re pleased the film is having an impact. There has been a lot of discussion about the correct first aid procedure for someone who is choking. SJA recommends that back blows should be given first, then abdominal thrusts if this is unsuccessful (known as the Heimlich manoeuvre in other countries).
Falmouth1966 - the child in the film is still conscious and is gasping for breath. If someone is unconscious and not breathing, the correct first aid is CPR. You can read about this on our website.
@stjohnambulance Not very realistic is it. You can hear her coughs and clearly hear her panting as she lies unconcious. If she can cough, she has a pretty decent airway!
Should have been filmed with her absolutely silent trying to get the parents attention as they have a giggle and a snog in the corner, much more effective.
Brilliant as it shows the first stage of the correct protocol of how to deal with a choking person.
The protocols used to deal with a choking person, child or infants are recommended by the Resuscitation Council of Great Britain, British Red Cross, St Andrew's Ambulance Association (Scotland), St John Ambulance and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
Get the free guide or find a training course in your area.

5 back slaps should be used first followed by abdominal thrusts (used to be called Heimlich manoeuvre) then repeated. Back slaps MAY force something down but this is extremely rare, and I know of no cases where this has happened. Abdominal thrusts = hospital, even if breathing may seem normal, as internal damage may have been done. This can be fixed, a dead child can not. Films don't substitute training. Get trained before your loved one needs you.
@mitts61 I'm sorry Mitts, if you think this is wrong then it is time to sign up for a St John Ambulance First Aid course, because it is very much right :)
i remember my friend's son was chocking on a candy, his face turned pale, she kept slapping on his back but didnt work, she was about to give up, but then random man came out of the crowd picked up child upside down and slapped him on his back, the candy came out, but man dissapear. That was a miracle.
Stupid commercial, it over-emphasizes something that is fairly common knowledge. People are really getting sick of all these useless advertising campaigns to promote awareness about stuff we already know about.
@DOHC2L I really agree with you, they shouldn't keep the audience dumber than they are. The way of advertising is good, but they didn't work it out too well. It would work better if it's something that people really wouldn't know so that they actually learn something...
@DOHC2L If we all knew this 'common knowledge' skill why do children continue to choke to death. Think about what you're saying, it is not common knowledge at all.
When someone is choking, by slapping them on the back, you are forcing the object downward.
The first thing you should do is call 911.
Then to safely remove a blocked object from someones throat, move behind them and place both hands on their hips. Slide your hands until they meet just above the belly button. Using the first knuckle of your dominant hand, make thrusting J-shaped motions into and upward in their stomach. Continue this until the object is expelled or they collapse.
@StJ4Mez That is a misconception. The protocol in the video is correct. the back blows are given with the casulaty leaning forward. The pounding in therory causes high pressure in the lungs hopefully forcing out the obstruction.
Current protocol is, 5 back blows followed by 5 abdominal thrusts. Repeat 3 times and then call for ambulance. Then carry on until the casualty becomes unconcious and begin CPR. As mentioned above please consult the St John Website or an up-to-date first aid book
that is a terribly cheap shot from St-John' guys! this is sick, I would never pass that in a theater where you make a load of money selling popcorns at skyrocketing prices!
When I took a first aid course in college, we were taught to give the Heimlich Maneuver to someone who is choking. From what I have read, slapping a choking victim on the back could do more harm than good.
@fr2ncm9 First Aid changes in response to more information - the Heimlich manoeuvre is easy to get wrong and someone not trained in first aid knows what they THINK it looks like, but might not be able to perform it properly. attempting it could cause internal damage, vomitting which may further block the airway or it may simply do nothing at all. 5 back slaps between the shoulder blades is the current recommendation as it is considered more effective and easier to do correctly.
I am concerned that the treatment is wrong, you would do back blows for a conscious casualty but not a child who has gone unconscious, I would do resus on the child in the video.
@punkromantic Yep, of course...but then what do you do f the first 3 slaps arent effective? would you know how to do abdominal thrusts in 5 y.o infant?
Yes, but it requires thought to do it correctly, natural reaction is to slap someon on the back. but you are meant to give them up to 5 back blows with the HEEL of your hand, not the palm. Natural reaction isn't to use the heel, but to use the palm, which is incorrect.
@Falmouth1966 I agree the advert is good - but am uncertain on the resus part of your comment - you can hear the child is still trying to breathe if you listen carefully - I didn't think you did resus on someone attempting self respiration
Well done St John, if that doesn't hit home I don't know what will, all parents must learn first aid and don't wait till it's too late.from a member and trainer.
