So true. Throughout most of the film, the decepticons were pretty much left without personality or character development. They all (with the exception of Megatron and Starscream) acted like mindless killing machines that act only on a simple task which was to seek and destroy.
Awesome review man, u speak the truth. They could have done even more with the movie. The movie was great, but they could have expanded on the characters much more.
You said that her character makes no sense. Maybe she is playing hard to get. She found him funny in the class scene perhaps because she is flirtatious. I hear most girls do like a guy that can make them laugh. Maybe this was an opportunity to establish her relationship with Sam. Nice job on this part as well!
I disagree with this part, I think Blackout was shown that way so it would look like you were actually there, unable to see the whole thing, inducing fear and/or awe. Thats my opinion.
But that thing about introducting humans thats kinda Michael Bays thing but we hope to see what he does on the Second Live action Transformers movie in 2009 >.>
also i hate the "cliche action-movie hot girl". its like, she IS totally shallow like you say and she should have started (in my opinion) as some small-town girl who nerdy sam likes anyway. then she could actually use her BRAIN (with which the "hottie" is unaquipped) to help the story. in its own way, this is also cliche but at least its more sentimental.
wait, i take that back. if mostly teenage boys went to see this like you say, this wouldn't have mattered anyway. although with sam, he should have been able to "find himself" as characters should in a good movie. at least he could have discovered SOMETHING about himself...*yawns*...these movies never really interest me.
you are so right the same thing happened when the blonde girl went to the fat kids house the F.B.I. talk for like 2 seconds and when they left it was night
I think the reason why they didn't let us get to know about the robots was because they wanted us as scared ans out of place as the humans were. When dealing with the exterrestrials you're not supposed to feel welcome. If any bond should have been shown it should have been more with Sam and Bumblebee but other than thtat I think they did fine with the character development by leaving you in the dark about who they really were.
As a critic you should critique it harshly but tell us good things about the movie so we WANT to go see it. All the little things you say don't matter that much to us little people. It was a really good movie.
what you said about scorponok is so true! i mean, it would make sense if he was let out to like catch ppl who were running away or something, but i guess not. -__- excellent criticing so far. i'm gonna make sure to watch your critics before i go see something i'm not so sure on. thanks for keeping good critics for good movies!
The first transformation of Blackout was a bit of a cop out, definitely should have showed the whole thing as they do with OP throughout the movie - it was the first big screen CGI transformation!!! Blackout is a staunch looking character and the tension was well built up in the lead up to him landing at the base. A bit of let down. Still love the movie tho!
Also, when you mentioned that all we can see is the effect of the attack, its because we are placed on-scene, at a human level, not at an overseer level. The usage of this is arguable, but I think I prefer the human level shot for that scene.
As for your mention of character development, I totally agree with you. Michael Bay needs to take some lessons in focusing on characters
Addendum to creating tension: In Jurassic Park, a similar scene was played as well - the man being eaten by the raptors in the wooden crate. You don't see a lot of the velociraptor, just sounds. And the man is dragged. The branchosaurus scene which you mentioned, is akin to the scene later on, when Optimus Prime and friends reveal themselves. Not very well placed, but well timed.
I agree with Chewxy what your asking for is expensive not the wide shot part but all the transformers demolishing a base. Michael Bay intended the movie to look different but with budget limits you got a cheaper version of what he intended so thought it would have been nice to see all the transformers it just wouldn't have been possible.
Also, the reason why there wasn't many shots of Blackout was to create tension, which means audiences would be more drawn into the story (even we all already know its about transforming robots)
And if you've ever shot during the magic hours (dawn and dusk), you'll know how fast the sun sets. And before long, you'd be cursing @*&#^*%!!! because you've just taken 3 takes.
I don't agree with what you said in about Blackout and all the Decepticons appearing within the first scene though. It would be crowding the audience's mind. People can only concentrate on 7 +/- 2 things at one time maximum, and by the time Blackout reaches the base, there are about 7 things on the average audience's mind already.
Also, by crowding the screen, the creators also risk losing audience who are new to the transformers series.
I agree with purplezebra85, you need to comment on the good parts of the movie as well, not just rip into it and tell people about all the bad parts and how they should change them
Alright I think The Blackout Wasn't Seen That Much For The Newer Fans To Wonder. But I Agree We Should have Had More Of Blackout. Now Whith Scorponok The Filmakers Made Him Deploy Cause Even Though Blackout Dosn't Now That There Will Be Survivors He Deploys Him Just In Case. If I Was Blackout I Wouldn't Want To Risk It.
i seem to remember the movie so till now i can folow you -the silence was funny- still thinking if i'll buy the bayformer$ dvd but i agree with everything you said so far

Yeah, I agree. That intro would have been awesome, they could have gone from the Decepticons, to the humans, to Blackout approaching the base.

Is there an aversion to character growth for writers nowadays? Jumper was sold on the concept of a b**tard superhero without any personality!
Just because that one bombed, doesn't mean they'll learn :(

They shouldn't have followed that movie prequel book storyline. The movie should have started from the beginning. Following the prequel is gay.
