Satine-In case you missed it, your brain (no matter how underdeveloped it might be) doesn't have work on the binary logic of "hate" or "like". What I criticize is bastardization of opera for which she provides her utmost support by being a mediocre soprano. Satine-Perhaps you should get your money back. As an aspiring operatic singer, how can you not discern the flaws in her singing although he's marketed as a top-shelf soprano? Try beginning with her whobbly vibrato and he difficulty in maintining the pitch. But that's where it doesn't stop. If I were you, I'd listen carefully to the likes as Elisabeth Scharzkopf, Leyla Gencer, Joan Sutherland, Marlyn Horne, Aprile Millo, Freni, Berganza, Anna Motto, Callas etc etc.

Satine-Why would I be jealous. What you suggest is just stupid. What's wrong with her singing. Here's a synopsis. Her vibrato is whobbly. Her coloratura is not there. She's got power but no sense of control. Get often goes of pitch. Is that enough for you? Listening to her after getting traumatized with hip hop and pop might be a big upgrade in musical taste for you but in terms of operatic excellence, he's rather weak.

While I am not sure if all current opera artists are slim, I am inclined to think that form takes precedence to excellent singing these days as you can sing. Kermit (Villazon) and Postergirl (Netrekbo) are mass marketed as the next best thing despite the fact that their singing is seriously flawed.
Would you be so kind as to post really good audio/video clips of your productions instead of these 30% distortion abominations? Surely you have the technology and the money (free) to do this.

One of the worst Manon I've ever heard. It is impossible to understand what she sings -- Sutherland has better diction. It is not necessary to portray Manon as a pole dancing whore, even for Netrebko? I've lost so much respect for her, I can't even hate her.
i do respect her, but i sooo agree about the pole dancing, ugh it's so unecessary! i noticed that LA Opera tends to add A LOT of sexualtiy to there shows. look at Tannhauser, eeek lots of nudity!
I still prefer the Auber version of this opera, but I had the privilege of seeing this production here in L.A. and it really was hot, especially the bedroom scene when Manon put the letter between her spread legs to have Desgrieux read it...hubba hubba. Sure, sex sells, but these operas are ABOUT sex (and love and everything else), dammit!

Wow.... what an ignorant thing to say about American opera directing, which is... actually.. if you knew anything... more conservative than Europe. La Opera is an exception to this rule... but nonetheless what an weird thing to want to say.
They already were nude in a performance of Romeo et Juliette. And lets just get one thing clear, the staging and costumes of this opera were absolutely stunning. The actinv was fantastic, and frankly sex is a much larger selling point in europe than it is in America. Its common knowledge that americans prefer violence. Manon is an opera fused with sexuality and tragedy, Anna netrebko is the perfect soprano to bring out that side of it.
And may I also add, and art is supposed to reflect life. I do believe sex is a part of life. and just focusing on the one and a half acts of sexuality, and not on the fantastically tender and beautifully expressed love scenes later in the opera shows how ignorant you really are in the UK.
When this production is a standard in the LA repertoire, the next cast might very well be be Montserrat Caballe and Luciano Pavarotti (or some similarly shaped active singers). I'm trying to imagine those two rolling around in bed in their underwear.
I have seen three productions of this opera in Europe that were far worse. You have seen a 2:15 clip. I'm not american but you need to be fair with your comments rather than spewing virilous anti-american banter when that has nothing to do with this.

One thing I've forgotten to say:I've seen that production yesterday on TV and I think, it is great.
A.N. and R.V. are great singers, not only great actors. But in the third act Rolando looks like "Pater Ralph" from "Thornbirds" :-)
