There doing great. There in a 36x72x12 tortoise table I built with a UV and a basking lamp. There in a room to them selves which stays at 75 to 80 degrees in front of a big window for natural sun light. The only problem I have is finding more variety for Tank, he's the Sulcata. Michelle is my Redfoot tortoiose and she eats greens, veggies, worms. I cant find anything other than grass or romain arround here. Maybe this summer I'll more food for him. Thanks for asking!
@singuleristwo it was either green leaf lettuce, or romaine lettuce. But now, I take them outside for the natural sunlight, and letting them feed on grass and weeds. I try to feed them what they eat out in the wild; seems more natural to me.
How big are they when born, I got a male a few days ago they guessed him to be 10 to 12 months. I feed him grass and weeds and some romain and let him run the back yard under my watchful eye, we have hawks. Going to build him a big outdoor house to share with my redfoot, they get along fine then move it indoors for the winter. Your going to have your hands full in 10 years with those two, enjoy them and feed them right from the start and they will be beautiful.
@mreid08 Good! When I first got them, they were about 2 inches long. Not only I have two, i bought an additional two more! Yes it will be a handful. I will post more recent videos! you should post some, i would like to see them.
The pellets have to much protein in it for the tortoises if they digest it I suggest Bed A Beast with timothy hay over top of it. the Bed A Beast is good for the humidity and the hay for grazing. They do live in Africa but spend a lot of time near water. in dry habitats their shells will develop pyramids. Sand, even the calcium crap and cut up or irritate their stomach if ingested, very common in younger tortoises.
@MikeMdrums at that age these hatchlings will not touch the hay, guaranteed. I would suggest natural clean safe grass along with weeds such as dandelions which include calcium. I would also suggest calcium supplement w/ d3 vitamin and if you can cactus pads (spineless of course)
Also you have rabbit pellets as substrate. You should take those out ASAP!!!! They don't hold any moisture for humidity and get moldy. Switch your bedding to Cypress mulch or Coco coir or even both or else your baby will start pyramiding. Soak them twice a day in warm water so that it does dehydrate! Also I would suggest doing it 2 times a DAY! Until they are about a year old...
@fmadrigal2905 I don't know if you know his but sulcata and leopard tortoises both stay in very dry environments. So why should you use cypress mulch? I have tried it and my hatchling looked prettified.
Please explain if I am wrong? I recommend Repti sand or sterile play sand for sulcata or leopard tortoises.
As for as Redfoot tortoises go, your advice would be perfect since they are super humidity loving tortoises.
@vampire5003 This is a common misconception. The spurthigh tortoise known as Geochelone sulcata, while in the Sahara is in a SEMI ARID location.Leaving these tortoises completely dry and dehydrated is 1 cause of pyramiding which will also lead to Metabolic Bone Disease. I suggest a little more research.
@fmadrigal2905 I agree with you, just keep getting conflicting responses from other youtubers. I keep my sulcata and leopard tortoise with about 50% humidity on cypress mulch with a little soil mixed in. They are kept in 75 gallon tubs each, but will eventually go outside and live on three acres of land.
nice babies ;) i also have 2 of them the same size:) theyr pretty cute , anyway , are you missing the vitamins for them? the calcium vitamin and multivitamins mix together
