Hey i have a question. My gtx 580 1.5gb card just stop working yearsterday. and i have no idea what can cause that. when i plug my old 8500gt it works. the fan are running but the gpu core is cold. got any idea? Thx
This isn't a reflow, but only a super heat for a proper reflow you require a BGA rework station which heats from top and bottom, this "fix" will last about 1 month maybe more if your lucky :)
loved the video thanks for taking the time to make it, I have an 8800 here and just purchased a hot air reflow soldering workstation, are you hovering around 2 inches above? or 3 inches? also the card I have is rebooting the machine constantly - it boots with no post, then just reboots again, tested with another graphics card and works fine, will re flowing to GPU it be worth a chance?
Your very welcome, you want to keep the gun around 1" away this gives the hot air room to spread a little more evenly ( avoiding hotspots ) without allowing so much space that the hot air cools before it hits the chip.
Typically, it will only reboot if the card is working long enough to load into the OS (Due to the system failure default settings "automatically restart") ...It can't hurt to try though.
@kim0050 good for you, i can work for months, but when your supplying a service and giving a warranty you need a BGA rework station to repair this type of fault as i wouldn't be charging money for this type of repair if i wasn't 100% sure it wouldn't fail again after a few weeks :)
10 minuites is a bit long isnt it? should it take this long to penetrate?
also there was no image of what it looked like before the fix (described as "pixelation"). i have a card that has bars on the bios/xp screen and low resolutions, and the driver will not install. i thought it was a problem with the memory. you have said to someone else that its almost always the GPU. so i will try that first.
Keep in mind, you are not directly heating the solder you are heating the solder through the GPU. For this reason, 10-12 minutes should be a good sweet spot.
eazy m8 i cant find no reflow gun anywhere so i used a paint stripper gun did same with foil wrapped around the other components dunno if i did it long enuff like haha but still no joy :( so i got me little lad a gt 240 n put the 8800gs aside till i no someone with a reflow gun.
hey plz tell me that today my msi nx8800gt stops working when i restart it a smoke came from it and i turned it off. after few hours i started it again it starts the fan works but it shows artifacts all over the screen . should i do this technique or is my gpu chip is burned
my 8800GT is still kicking. Must be because i bought an aftermarket cooler for it. It uses no fan. and Rarely goes above 130F on maximum load left for a few hours. and that's with no fan. 4 years and its still working playing BF3 LOL
To all those asking: No, a hairdryer will NOT work. If your hairdryer got hot enough to melt solder, it would scorch the hair right off your head and blister your skin.
It would have been nice to see a close up of what you were doing. So... if I understand correctly: You're not adding new solder you're just melting the current joints?
Use Alcohol based cleaner to clean the smudge off the chip, Make sure no alcohol based cleaner touches the actual circuit board, just the chip. Clean it all off, then Re-apply some new thermal paste on all its chips that the heat sink comes in contact with. when u apply paste, Apply a very thin coat. and apply to all its surface. Make sure its not a lot because u don't want it oozing out the edges when u reapply the entire heatsink to it ( 8800GT Case )
This time I used hot air gun used for paint removal. It is 100 to 600 ° C, had no way to check how hot it really is so I just hoped it is about 200 to 300 °C and it worked. :) Will see how long it works this time.
Also some hardware people told me that 200 C is a bit too low and 300 C would do do no harm if it is aimed at the chip only. I guess 200 is the limit if you put it in the oven. :D
Tnx.. I have one more question - do you know any graphic card (NVidia or ATI) that just doesn't react to heating up GPU and card memory and can't be fixed this way? Are there any specific models that need to be avoided?
Hello, I must say that I am amazed with this video! Thank you so much, you've helped me fix many many graphic cards! I have one question though: what do you personally think - how long can this ''fix'' last? Will the simptoms like strange artifacts ever come back? Is this a temporary or a permanent fix?
Yes, this fix should hold up as long as the GPU solder was completely re-flowed. However, you may have to modify the cooling of the card and/or the airflow in the system itself to prevent the card from reaching solder melting temps while in use.
Start at 100c for 3 minutes ( this is to prevent the GPU from heating up to fast and causing damage ) then 200c for 10 minutes for a total of 13 minutes.
The main issue with these cards is that the GPU heats up to the point where the solder starts to melt. Due to expantion and conntraction of the parts this leaves either a broken or a bad connection between the two.
The GPU is the only part on the card that should be able to get hot enough for this to take place. So, unless you flexed the PCB there should be no reason to have to re-flow anything else.
I tried this on 2 8800GT's I have recently, both were putting artifacts on the screen. After doing it, both no longer put out any monitor output, the fans spin madly, and NVFlash can only find one of them (The dos tool). I'm curious, what might I have done wrong, and what should I try now?
Sounds like you may have over heated the GPU or damaged another component on the cards by not properly shielding them. What did you use to monitor the temp?
@CPRcomputersDirect To monitor the temp I used... Nothing... That's probably what happened. I did shield the surrounding components using Tin foil though as you did, leaving the RAM and GPU exposed for the reflow.
The heat gun I have isn't quite a state of the art setup as you have sadly. So it doesn't monitor the temp itself. Can you suggest a good method and equipment to monitor the temperature in that situation?
its possible to use a rectifier diode to monitor temps. i used a 200mv meter (or multimeter), and a diode in forward mode with resistor. two trimpots, one is a simple voltage divider to subtract a voltage from the reading of the other input, and the second was a divider on the diode output. then you have to calibrate with room temp and boiling water. it reads +/- 200.0*C. under car hood, goes >200 after i turn it off. room temp increases 2C with fan on!
@LianellEsorrasilome i forgot to mention: instead of the "simple voltage divider": i used some LEDs to make a reference voltage, this voltage was divided with the pot

hey where exactly do you run the heat along, the edges of the gpu? or just over the top?
Hangshai 1 day ago
@Hangshai
The idea is to try to keep the temp the same through out the chip. I like to move in smooth, horizontal and diagonal , fairly slow, even patterns.

From my experience the GPU has almost always been at fault. I would only have tried re-flowing the memory chips as a last resort.
Honestly, other than re-balling the chip this is the only way I would recommend.
There are people that have used a standard heat gun, a quarter as a heat sink and solder on top to try and monitor when the temps reach re-flow.
Hope that helped
CPRcomputersDirect 9 months ago

its possible to use a rectifier diode to monitor temps. i used a 200mv meter (or multimeter), and a diode in forward mode with resistor. two trimpots, one is a simple voltage divider to subtract a voltage from the reading of the other input, and the second was a divider on the diode output. then you have to calibrate with room temp and boiling water. it reads +/- 200.0*C. under car hood, goes >200 after i turn it off. room temp increases 2C with fan on!
