  • Hey i have a question. My gtx 580 1.5gb card just stop working yearsterday. and i have no idea what can cause that. when i plug my old 8500gt it works. the fan are running but the gpu core is cold. got any idea? Thx

  • hey where exactly do you run the heat along, the edges of the gpu? or just over the top?

  • @Hangshai

The idea is to try to keep the temp the same through out the chip. I like to move in smooth, horizontal and diagonal , fairly slow, even patterns.

  • i dont have a hot air gun, can i use a hairdryer? :p

  • This isn't a reflow, but only a super heat for a proper reflow you require a BGA rework station which heats from top and bottom, this "fix" will last about 1 month maybe more if your lucky :)

  • loved the video thanks for taking the time to make it, I have an 8800 here and just purchased a hot air reflow soldering workstation, are you hovering around 2 inches above? or 3 inches? also the card I have is rebooting the machine constantly - it boots with no post, then just reboots again, tested with another graphics card and works fine, will re flowing to GPU it be worth a chance?

  • @digitalmonkeynuts

Your very welcome, you want to keep the gun around 1" away this gives the hot air room to spread a little more evenly ( avoiding hotspots ) without allowing so much space that the hot air cools before it hits the chip.

Typically, it will only reboot if the card is working long enough to load into the OS (Due to the system failure default settings "automatically restart") ...It can't hurt to try though.

  • my gtx 280 still works 4 months now.my 7900gtx toooo....

  • @kim0050 good for you, i can work for months, but when your supplying a service and giving a warranty you need a BGA rework station to repair this type of fault as i wouldn't be charging money for this type of repair if i wasn't 100% sure it wouldn't fail again after a few weeks :)

  • awsome video Reflow with hot air gun how much are they

  • @rimtech45

Thank you, they are currently around $119.00 USD

  • Thanks for reply, I posted same question @ your other vid, please ignore. Will probably pickup same unit. Great price.

  • Question about the Blackjack unit, it seems very loud in the vid., is it actually that loud?

    Great presentation, well done.

  • @render8

    Thank you.

No, It's really not that loud. I did have some stuff sitting ontop of it rattling around.

  • Thanks for sharing, by the way may I know is this method works with laptop graphic card too?

  • @leonlim2008

Yes, it will be the same with most intergrated graphics.

  • Worked for 6600.

  • 10 minutes and no flux!!! I'm surprised it still works!

  • ola amigo preciso de ajuda minha sapphire HD 5870 parou de dar sinal de video agora fica só tela preta

  • i did it for the 13 minutes, the last minute of first step was at 150 and 150-100 for the second and worked for my card i wrote about before..

  • 10 minuites is a bit long isnt it? should it take this long to penetrate?

also there was no image of what it looked like before the fix (described as "pixelation"). i have a card that has bars on the bios/xp screen and low resolutions, and the driver will not install. i thought it was a problem with the memory. you have said to someone else that its almost always the GPU. so i will try that first.

  • @digitallyhere

Keep in mind, you are not directly heating the solder you are heating the solder through the GPU. For this reason, 10-12 minutes should be a good sweet spot.

  • @CPRcomputersDirect

please can you summarize the whole cycle time and temperature?

    thanks

  • No its the same problem - GPU

  • I fixed my 9800 gt with heat air gun. Thanks!

  • I fixed my 8500 gt with borrowed heat air gun. TY

  • eazy m8 i cant find no reflow gun anywhere so i used a paint stripper gun did same with foil wrapped around the other components dunno if i did it long enuff like haha but still no joy :( so i got me little lad a gt 240 n put the 8800gs aside till i no someone with a reflow gun.

  • very hot video ;)

  • good stuff! where are you from btw? some of your words sound like youre australian, but with an american accent!

  • @XenatR

    Thanks! I'm from Boston Ma

  • my 8800GT is still kicking. Must be because i bought an aftermarket cooler for it. It uses no fan. and Rarely goes above 130F on maximum load left for a few hours. and that's with no fan. 4 years and its still working playing BF3 LOL

  • how much does the "" HOT AIR GUN "" cost ??

  • @petrecaretzu

    Around $125 USD

  • To all those asking: No, a hairdryer will NOT work. If your hairdryer got hot enough to melt solder, it would scorch the hair right off your head and blister your skin.

  • Thx, I used wifes hair dryer ;)

  • It would have been nice to see a close up of what you were doing. So... if I understand correctly: You're not adding new solder you're just melting the current joints?

  • @dustinjonesguitarist

Yes, just reflowing the existing solder.

  • there was thermal paste on the chip. do i need to reapply some more?

  • @brankin85 You should clean off the thermal paste that is on there now and replace it with new.

  • Use Alcohol based cleaner to clean the smudge off the chip, Make sure no alcohol based cleaner touches the actual circuit board, just the chip. Clean it all off, then Re-apply some new thermal paste on all its chips that the heat sink comes in contact with. when u apply paste, Apply a very thin coat. and apply to all its surface. Make sure its not a lot because u don't want it oozing out the edges when u reapply the entire heatsink to it ( 8800GT Case )

  • @brankin85

    Yes

  • good info m8 nice one gonna try this on my overheated 8800gs alfa dog ill get back to ya n let ya no how it went ;o)

  • @TheDazzarazza

    Great!

  • Hair dryer might work, you need to preheat it on low .. the you need a REFERENCE SOLDER to see when it melts ...

this guy is doing it without a reference solder , just put a piece of solder and see when it melts ...

no other way to tell if the connection will be strong !!

  • what temp you set ?

  • Thx, this method worked. :)

  • @Janhouse

    Nice!

  • @CPRcomputersDirect, and 2 months after I heated it, it died again.

This time I used hot air gun used for paint removal. It is 100 to 600 ° C, had no way to check how hot it really is so I just hoped it is about 200 to 300 °C and it worked. :) Will see how long it works this time.

Also some hardware people told me that 200 C is a bit too low and 300 C would do do no harm if it is aimed at the chip only. I guess 200 is the limit if you put it in the oven. :D

  • gtx280 resurrection!!!! THANKS A LOT!

  • @kim0050

    Good to hear!

  • @kim0050

    Your very welcome!

  • @kim0050

your graphics card still works? :(((

  • i have a sony vaio laptop with graphic card not working can i still use that, can i use hair dryer,

  • @hamama99

Yes, this should work with most graphics chips be it on a dedicated graphics card or an integrated motherboard chip.

NO, I would never recommend using a hair drier.

  • @CPRcomputersDirect can i use hair dryer on 9600 gso

  • @CPRcomputersDirect can iuse hair dyer on 9600 gso

  • Ugh thats a loud Hot Air station!

  • hi this is romit ....

just wanna know can i do the same thing which u did in this video to repair the south bridge of my sony laptop????

  • Two weeks and black screen coming home :] money not...

  • thank you so much.. i just brought my 8800GTS 512 back to life again.

  • @falcon01i

    Great to hear!

  • wood this work on a ps3/xbox 360 ?

  • @beegeefan1989

Yes, provided it is a GPU related issue.

  • thank you dude mine is working like a charm after this technique

  • @xgamer2100

    Your very welcome

  • my 8800gt card does not show any image stays black...

    i think it died

  • flux?

  • nice vid but the way you are chewing your gum is annoying!

  • @andrestall

There will be no gum in the next video ;)

  • Tnx.. I have one more question - do you know any graphic card (NVidia or ATI) that just doesn't react to heating up GPU and card memory and can't be fixed this way? Are there any specific models that need to be avoided?

  • @toda90

This fix can be used for the majority of Gaming graphics cards.

  • @CPRcomputersDirect Thank you once again!

  • Hello, I must say that I am amazed with this video! Thank you so much, you've helped me fix many many graphic cards! I have one question though: what do you personally think - how long can this ''fix'' last? Will the simptoms like strange artifacts ever come back? Is this a temporary or a permanent fix?

  • @toda90

    Your very welcome

Yes, this fix should hold up as long as the GPU solder was completely re-flowed. However, you may have to modify the cooling of the card and/or the airflow in the system itself to prevent the card from reaching solder melting temps while in use.

  • Im going to use the oven, as this card is going to the bin otherwise, i have nothing to loose.. whish me luck, card is a 8800GTS

  • Hey man, You have good tools, but your screwdriver is a piece of junk!

  • @AIexanderHartdegen

It hasn't failed me yet ;)

  • Hi Friend,

i try this but it works at 150c. This kind reflow will this longer ?

  • @Domaincontrol

I recommend using the temps mentioned in the video to insure proper re-flow.

  • A really good clear and well explained video, top marks young man! (o:

  • @redhotsun51

    Thanks for the kind words

  • what temp and time u use for reflow??? thx

  • @DinamicTree

Temps are mentioned in the video.

  • @CPRcomputersDirect Thx, but my english is very bad, and dont understand speaked english, only writted, THX, and sorry for my bad english.

  • @DinamicTree

    Oh no problem,

Start at 100c for 3 minutes ( this is to prevent the GPU from heating up to fast and causing damage ) then 200c for 10 minutes for a total of 13 minutes.

  • thx man it work

    me doing this watch?v=4PFMr8N0DMw

  • Taki relfow pomaga dokładnie na 2 tygodnie. Sprzedaj ten hot air bo widac że nie wiesz do czego służy.

  • The gum chewing was too much for me.

  • Thanx for tutorial man. I have that problem with my 8800 GTS, damn things obviously aren't built well. Gonna try it out.

  • Hi man i see you only heat the main chip, would you ever do a quick flow on pcb to re flow any dry solder joints?

    Good video btw.

  • @rsgametech1

The main issue with these cards is that the GPU heats up to the point where the solder starts to melt. Due to expantion and conntraction of the parts this leaves either a broken or a bad connection between the two.

The GPU is the only part on the card that should be able to get hot enough for this to take place. So, unless you flexed the PCB there should be no reason to have to re-flow anything else.

  • I tried this on 2 8800GT's I have recently, both were putting artifacts on the screen. After doing it, both no longer put out any monitor output, the fans spin madly, and NVFlash can only find one of them (The dos tool). I'm curious, what might I have done wrong, and what should I try now?

  • @LianellEsorrasilome

Sounds like you may have over heated the GPU or damaged another component on the cards by not properly shielding them. What did you use to monitor the temp?

  • @CPRcomputersDirect To monitor the temp I used... Nothing... That's probably what happened. I did shield the surrounding components using Tin foil though as you did, leaving the RAM and GPU exposed for the reflow.

The heat gun I have isn't quite a state of the art setup as you have sadly. So it doesn't monitor the temp itself. Can you suggest a good method and equipment to monitor the temperature in that situation?

  • @LianellEsorrasilome

From my experience the GPU has almost always been at fault. I would only have tried re-flowing the memory chips as a last resort.

Honestly, other than re-balling the chip this is the only way I would recommend.

There are people that have used a standard heat gun, a quarter as a heat sink and solder on top to try and monitor when the temps reach re-flow.

    Hope that helped

  • @LianellEsorrasilome

its possible to use a rectifier diode to monitor temps. i used a 200mv meter (or multimeter), and a diode in forward mode with resistor. two trimpots, one is a simple voltage divider to subtract a voltage from the reading of the other input, and the second was a divider on the diode output. then you have to calibrate with room temp and boiling water. it reads +/- 200.0*C. under car hood, goes >200 after i turn it off. room temp increases 2C with fan on!

  • @LianellEsorrasilome i forgot to mention: instead of the "simple voltage divider": i used some LEDs to make a reference voltage, this voltage was divided with the pot

  • Hi, nice video, I think so many bitches watched this video but they didnt commented and subbed you, Im gonna try this with my GTX 480 and if this works I will sub ya ;D

  • Thanks for the guide, finally my 4870x2 back alive!

  • @johnnywcw123

    Great!

  • Nice tip about cutting around the gpu

In the past i have been taping foil around the gpu

and then cleaning it up with propanol after

Dont know why i didnt think to cut it out lol

  • Really helpful. I had 3 8800gt's. They all died!
