  • Richard Thompson is always great!

  • Pretentious, @jonesthephones? I respectfully disagree. He's as self-deprecating as can be. And most of all, he's making tons of contact with his audience, so that - as @calypsojimmy says - when he starts the song his audience will follow him right down deep.

  • Going to see him next friday in Eugene Oregon. One of my long time favorites!

  • Folks who are saying its a Lowden and not a Martin are correct. The 65 Martin 000-18 has been retired for decades, and is not a cutaway.

Folks who suggest that this guy is pretentious are incorrect. He may seem to be hyper between songs, but that is just his schtick ... when beat #1 of measure #1 of this song (or any song he plays) hits, how can one say, upon witnessing the performance, that he is not completely into the deep zone. Actually I guess you could say it ... but it's just not so

  • Superb playing,,,,,C

  • Beautiful

  • Pretentious Bastard. On this occasion, wreaking havoc with what should be a wonderful song, it would seem to glorify his own opinion of himself.

This song should be about giving, above all. It ain't here...!

  • awesome stuff

  • BTW that is not a Martin. I don't know what it is but I know what it isn't

  • your a great guitar player...guitarjims folk films!

  • well....all I can say now is that he got an incredible humor ! I miss this concert ! adorable.brilliant player as well.

  • @zed how could you not think of Sandy Denny with songs as these

  • He looks and dresses like a twat.......

  • @caferive It was 1990 - everyone did!

  • @mooseven Don't remember making this comment, should have finished it with....but plays and sings like a genius...

  • Excellent music as always, but I was particularly impressed at how well he handled a boisterous crowd.

  • It makes me wonder if he is thinking about Sandy Denny when he sings this song...?

  • This is the song, it's a traditional Celtic ballad I think, that Jimmy Page nicked for his "White Summer" instrumental. I love Jimmy Page, so don't think I'm calling him out and trying to pin him against a wall. It's just a fact.

  • What a wonderful voice! His playing is almost angelic. Great posting. Thank you.

  • he recently got on stage with hugh cornwell an old friend any footage?

  • Yes! I was at this show! I've got an old copy of the entire show on cassette tape. A most memorable evening 20 years ago. Amazing what you can find here on the You Tube

  • A modest genius. Richard Thompson has inspired a new spiritual phase in my life. Thank you, Richard.

  • ooohhhhhh,Richard, how I love you!! "your accent eludes me" perfect!!

  • As one only too acquainted with Paisley, superbus maximus.

  • Would you believe that I was there just happened to be around Seattle and just could not believe my look. Do you know that was 20 years ago what a memory .

He really blew them away with marvelous version of Vincent Black Lighting and some old Fairport Stuff.

    Thanks for reminding me

  • Paisley Corridors...

  • Astounding performance!

  • Almost sounds like the same tuning to The End by The Doors.

  • @fatdogtavern It does remind me of that...

  • @fatdogtavern I reckon you are exactly right there. DADGAD

  • @fatdogtavern Exactly right I reckon. DADGAD

  • Stunning playing and singing.Thompson is pure class

  • Shame about the shouting out - reckon some enjoy that more than the music.

  • oh my god...THANK YOU!!

  • Great performance. Too bad the morons there can't shut their faces while he plays.

  • Yes that's DADGAD

  • Is he playing DADGAD?

  • Absolutly excelent player!!! Very pretty!

  • mmmmm paisley.....

  • that's crearly a Lowden, not a Martin

  • Excellant as always

There really is only one RT and long may he survive

  • Quality

  • Simply beautiful. And I'm so glad you caught his banter introducing the song to the crowd. I just wish they would STFU when he's singing and playing. Grr!

  • This just does it for me.. I can listen over & over... I can play it a little, but this is unreal! Got to see him live someday, saw Tommy Emmanual last year! Willy Porter is playing nearby next month, awesome

  • The Paisley Corridors of Time, my new bands name.

    Brilliant.

  • Yellow and Pink paisley's and some purple too

  • Orange and that luminous green would work well together, "Peace, Man".

  • @MITCHWILD I have to steal this qoute for my account :) LMFAO

  • what is his guitar?

  • I think it's his old Martin 00018..

  • @joni36 That's the Lowden L32 cutaway.

  • @joni36 That's the Lowden L32 cutaway.

  • @joni36 I think you will find it is a Lowden.

  • @joni36 Looks like a Lowden

  • @joni36 no cut out on an 000-18 mate

  • @joni36 Are you sure that's not his Lowden?

  • @joni36 Martin's sound incredible.

  • @joni36 he headstock is a bit strange for a martin... i would expect the straight one...

  • @joni36 - Actually it looks like a Lowden from the headstock.

  • @joni36 It doesn't look remotely like a Martin. It's a Lowden. His gear details are on his website.

  • its a lowden.

  • That is a cedar and walnut lowden model F with a sunrise pickup.

  • @sternecaugek Most likely it's one of his Lowdens.

  • @sternecaugek The guitar is actually a Lowden F series. Not sure which model exactly though.

  • @sternecaugek It's a Lowden guitar

  • @sternecaugek -----It's his main Lowden, when it was relatively new. he still plays this one, but he has a signature model now.

  • @sternecaugek looks like a lowden to me. Nice if you've got 6 grand to spare

  • @sternecaugek Come, come... it's a Louden.

  • it's a Lowden. not sure which body type. amazing guitars.

  • @sternecaugek Rather tardy reply, but it's a lowden L32C. You've probably found that out by now. It's very nice.

He now has a Lowden Signature model, which is gurrrrgh.... *drools slightly*

  • @sternecaugek It's a Lowden- Made in Northern Ireland.

  • @sternecaugek Lowden L32C

  • @sternecaugek Lowden F-27C

  • Fairy strange. This is the only time I ever heard RT play eastern influence. In the same time U will find Jimmy Page play the same song like ordinary RT (folkrock).

Two great guitarist outside their ordinary "frame".

  • Now this is what (the quality of musician/songwriter/singer) you want to aspire to kids........authentic, original, majestic.

  • This is great... if I could only stop thinking of Sandy Denny singing it. Damn it, she'd be 62 this year.

  • Oh that would be good I have to look for it... thanks

  • That's appropriate.

  • Where can I find tabs for this?!?!? heehehelp!!

  • you cant just learn thompson from a tab, thats like learning to write chinese thru a telephone...:)

  • I think I finally figured it out by ear actually. woot!

  • glad to hear...

  • Grate playing! Love it :)

  • Love the man & his music, Lovely song, have heard by other artists, Aw, but Richard does sing, play guitar ever more lovely, He made Fairport Convention, Great group of course - with RT as the Star

  • "he"

-- of course I meant to type "he" ( not "her")

    Sorry Richard!

  • Wow...

    Speechless.

I've heard this song performed by at least two dozen other musicians (half of whom have videos here on youtube), and for me, Thompson's version -- even though it does alter the melody a bit -- surpasses them all.

Has her ever released this on an album? I'd love to hear it without the distracting crowd chatter in the background.

  • He wasn't in Fotheringay.

  • Saw him do a very similar version at the Newport Folk Festival 1989. A lot of the crowd didn't get it then, either.

I've seen him three or four times since then, and I like him much better at small shows than festivals. The audience is much more clued in, and he can show off his range more when he has no fixed time slot.

"Fotheringful Confusion" is a pun on two bands he was in: Fairport Convention and Fotheringay.

  • Great reply & information. Thnx!

  • Haven't heard this version before....

No doubt, Dicky Thompso is very uch underated...............

  • Richie Rules. 'nuff said.

  • Yeah I heard Davey Graham's version. It is actually "She Moved Through the Bizzar / Blue Raga". Almost identical.

  • Isee some resembleance but more "influece" from Urge for Going by Tom Rush (or vice versa). Agree that RT is one of the most underated guitarists.

  • Actually, "Urge for Going" was written by Joni Mitchell, and covered by Tom Rush. As for RT's playing, I have no superlatives to describe my awe.

  • I don't see how this song anywhere sounds like "White Summer" by Jimmy Page.

  • Not this arrangement. Look for Davey Graham's.

  • Fotheringport Confusion....i can't find their albums anywhere

  • The vinyl would be a pain to find ,but happily the CDs are all remastered with dozens of bonus tracks,The BBC Fairport archive is released too. Also the long shelved Fotheringay " 2" is out.Rare Sandy Denny demos in my channel as well>>>

  • Try Fairport Convention, RT is just having a little fun with the name.....

  • Yup, he's joking... it's Fairport Convention. Four great albums are Liege and Lief, What We Did on Our Holidays, Unhalfbricking, and Full House.

  • The first LP9Fairport Convention, with Judy Dyble and Ian Mathhews) is excellent as well, and gets better with time. The early 'psychedlic' Fairport were perhaps too advanced for 1968.

  • I've seen Richard dozens of time, and he never fails to amaze! The greatest guitarist ever! The original Fairport version of this song, with Sandy Denny in vocals send chills up my spine.

  • i'm putting this on myspace come back through the paisley corridors of time

  • Oh Man!! Fantastic!! This is my favorite Irish Song. I listen to Loreena Mckennits version, but.... wow... he sure has made this his own. Beautiful !! What a guitarist and Raw Talent!

  • pjotr60dvd! Let's say around '69

  • What tuning is he using ?

  • It's DADGAD tuning. The chords are mostly C major and D major, with G major thrown in here and there.

  • Great song with slick witty repartee. Anyone know what tuning RT used here? Thanks!!

  • im probaly the only 15 year old in the world thats into richard thompson

  • Yes tweed, you are the only one.You are very, very special. If you play guitar you are headed in the right direction.

  • a great performance from a great performer.

  • the seattle crowd is irritating. they expect him to be an American without even listening first. it's amazing how his talent and skilly cuts through the jaded, silly, low minded audience BS

  • richard thompson is a guitar god. but I must say, there's almost always a contentious joking relationship between him and his audiences whenever I've seen him. He's too clever for the beer-soaked audiences he plays for, and he knows it. and the dumbness irritates him.

  • Yup! Dates back from his time with Fairport Convention. Guess it was something like 1967.

  • Great musician doing a great song! Thanks.

  • great song
