@kattvictoria2000 Sweetie, Rebbie isn't next to the oldest, she IS the oldest. And contrary to your misguided reason, she "waited" to show she could sing because she got married & stated a family at a young age. Get your facts straight & don't post ignorance, PLEASE
@saucedupbj: I could not disagree with you more...in my opinion, the best SINGER in this family is Randy, who also wrote & co wrote some of the Jacksons biggest hits (Shake Your Body Down To The Ground for one). Too bad he only had 1 solo album :(
The marimba-like sound in passages reminds me of the band Toto's song "Africa". Bandmember Jeff Porcaro wrote several songs for Rebbie's brother MJ (who sings in the background "Centipede!"). So a connection might be there. The reference to the crawling aspect of the Centipede and the reference to heat may be connected to MJ's (who wrote the song) awareness of Kundalini. This was a subject addressed by Maurice White when he wrote "Serpentine Fire". I once heard him explain this on radio.
@Ruhe1986 ROFL, yes! Funny thing is, we had sooo many of these perverted songs back then and hey got the message across without mentioning b!tch, hoe, etc. I love it, and Rebbie killed this song!
Is it just me or are those background dancers looking really amateur here??? I used to watch this show as a little girl and remembered the dancers being far more dazzling than this! Love this song and Rebbie!
i dont have alink to it. i got this from a personal friend. you may be right about this. although as i said earlier rebbie sang the ad-libs live. i just went to see her last saturday, and again she sang the ad-libs on point . a friend that went with me even said she thought the same thing until the concert. if rebbie comes to your area please go see her you wont be dissapointed.
thanks for replying back. i just wanted to throw that out there. i have seen rebbie in concert and she sang those notes stonger than on the record. although i believe you are right.
Some of you fans need to find the instrumental that's on here and make some cover versions. It would be nice to hear a different take on this classic. And the way the untalented/unoriginal rappers are going these days, it won't surprise me if "Centipede" gets sampled in the next 5 years!
@JasonTyberiusKirk Diggit! This was the jawn back then. She was definitely rockin it. I loved this song. I used to play this song all the time on the jukebox in the bar while playing the Centipede video game at the same time. She was the bomb! This song brings back so many good memories. I remember when it first came out, on the radio they would say the Jackson 5 sister, Rebbie Jackson!
martha wash did an interview in the late ninties and she confirmed that rebbie was singing the ad libs at the end. martha washes voice is a lot stronger than the ad libs done on rebbies centipede.
@1absolom Would you have a link to that interview? Not disputing you, and Rebbie can definately sing, but her voice isn't as powerful as the ad-libbed part. It actually does sound like Martha Wash to me. I think The Weather Girls are doing more than singing backup during the choruses.
@1absolom Please post a link to that interview. Martha might have said that before she sued record companies for rightful credit on albums. But after she won the lawsuit, I highly doubt she said this. Martha did a lot of session work in the 80's and 90's after she left the Weather Girls with Izora. Martha has a very distinctive voice, and there's no way the ad-lib is Rebbie!
its funny how she has one of the best, if not, the best voice out of the jacksons (bar michael) yet she gave up on music ages ago and isnt really known as a singer, i love me some janet (latoya... is like a bad MJ tribute act) but rebbie is a by far better singer than her sisters... but janet did have better songs/producers though so i can see why she was more sucessful, rebie = the voice but janet is more of the whole package..
Thank you for posting this video! This performance on Solid Gold really made my night! I never knew she was on Solid Gold...The performance was great!
Its sad how columbia records failed to promote rebbie. All of her albums are good, and would have sold more had they marketed her material. I hope rebbie does a tour here in the states. i missed her concert in pennsylvania.
The Jacksons are a very talented family. The only one that don't have very much musical talent is Latoya. But she found other ways to keep herself out there. Rebbie has good vocals and she probably would have been just as successful or more successful than Janet if she had continued to pursue her career, because she definitely can sing better than Janet.
@tommiexander its not all about the voice though, i 100% agree that rebbie's voice is better, but janet is more markertable, she teamed up with good produces for her albums and good directors for her videos... being a sucessful singer is more than just the voice in this day and age (or 20 years ago etc..), janet is more of the complete package, there have been lots and lots of amazing singers who have had little sucess, its about more than having a voice... much of it is visual...
Even though Rebbie has long since hung up her singing career, she will ALWAYS be remembered for this hot jam. I've always felt that Rebbie & Jermaine could have (and SHOULD) have had longer careers like Michael & Janet did.
Just like on a lot of MJ song, although the background sounds like MJ (and he did a lot of his own background vocals), Siedah Garrett sing a whole lotta background for MJ, especially notes that MJ can't hit. It's been done for years, just like movies that use stunt doubles for big stars. Nothing new about that.
I dont know why everyone keeps saying thats not rebbie at the end, it is. I went to see her in perform in 84 and 87 when she was promoting her album reaction and she hit every note. If you listen to her songs reaction and ticket to love you will see she is fully capable. also read the article in the 1985 issue of right on magazine and see what martha wash and izora armstead said about her vocal range and how impressed they were.
i dont know why everyon keeps saying thats not rebbie at the end, it is. i went to see her in concert in 85 and 86 when she was promoting her album reaction. she hit every note. and if you listen to the song reaction and ticket to love you will see she is capable of singing strong notes like that. also read what martha wash and izora armstead said about her voice strength in right on magazine 1985.
For so many years I always felt "Wow Rebbie can really sing and Janet Got all the success". I love Janet and she IS a good singer but Rebbie is no better. All that whaling in the middle of the song (3;15 to 4;12) IS NOT Rebbie but Martha Wash. Now anyone who know's Martha's voice will know this is tru. Martha did an interview back in the 90's when all that happened to her and she talked about this song for a moment. Still a hot song and I loved Rebbie back than.
That's the difference between music prior to 1989 and now: everything is laid out for you nowadays, and no sexual detail is left untouched. "Singers" (and I say that loosely) will whore themselves out to stay relevant and get paid, and Lady GaGa / Britney Spears / Mariah Carey are leading the pack! Rebbie is fully dressed and working her magic with those hand movements and head jerks. None of the young female pop "singers" in today's generation can hold a candle to Rebbie!
People just don't dance like this anymore! The background dancers were *WORKING IT OUT*, and kids these days just want to have simulated sex on the dance floor. I'm sure Rebbie looks back at her "Centipede" days and laughs, but this song was (and still is) a sick beat! The lyrics are 80's cheese, yes, but you could be sexual in music back then without telling *ALL* the details.
Yes this is my shyt! Rebbie does have the best voice. She's next to the eldest child and after getting whoop enough just cause...why yall think she had to that long to show she can sing.LOL but real talk she had work the money end of the business mostly.
hot damn well i'll be a monkey's uncle...i am so disappointed being that was my favorite part of the song :( so sad Yes Rebbie is talented but that was a major let down...i'm gonna go cry in the car!
As a diehard Martha Wash fan, those are clearly her background vocals on this song. I wish there was a performance of Rebbie singing this song *WITHOUT* the backing track so we could see what her voice is really like.
@JumpStreet1983 THANK YOU, THANKU, THANK U!!!!! I Just posted a few day's ago that all that whaling in the middle of the song is not Rebbie BUT Martha. For years I thought it was her than Marha had spoke about this song in an interview I saw on VH1. Anyone who knows her voice and I am a big fan as well know's that is Martha.
I really like this song. However, when i was talking to my mom about how i liked it she told me that a woman named Martha Wash(or something like that) had actually sung all those belting parts near the end...so tho Rebbie has a decent voice that's not her singing from about 3:15 onward...it's her back-up singer. I googled it and found this to be true. Apparently this woman had her voice stolen by a lot of other groups too. I love the Jackson family so i'm not hatin i'm just statin facts... :)
@MCLamb09 Agreed they stole Martha's voice alot back then. Google Loleatta Halloway also, I reckon her voice was stolen the most though. Her legendary high pitched screams can be heard in old Black box songs and many dance clubs across North America. In fact last week I heard her voice in a remix to some song at the mall. No one screams like her...trust me, a very recognizable voice even if you never heard her name before. She appears live with Mark Mark's Good Vibrations song.
That's BOTH Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes (of the Weather Girls)(Two Tons O'Fun) on back-ups. That's Izora growling "And it's crawling like a centipede!"
Yeah she was. and the stage performance wasn't all that they were all of with the dancing. I like that dancing in the video better. Maybe they should have used that instead. lol
WOW! I have never seen this! No doubt amongst the 3 sisters, Rebbie Jackson has the strongest voice! Thank you for posting. I agree with the previous comments this joint is SERIOUS!
This song is SERIOUS... Period... And Rebbie never really took music as serious as any of her family did... But you tell me why she damn near sings the best. Rebbie can flat out sing
@sinofmidmobb ummmm i dont know where u get your info from but Rebbie took singing very serious, she just wasnt popular as her brother and sister, she has toured all her life, did back up, wrote for other artists......she did more than just this song...
Rebbie looks so different in this than she does in more recent pics, and even ones of her when she was on the Jackson variety show. Definitely her prime years.
@knmlover i wonder if it was the record company's decision to pretend like that. i mean i love rebbie but doing it in the video and live lip sync is kinda misleading to the public. it's a great song though always loved it.
Probably the record company. Ironically, Martha Wash sued C&C Music Factory for this same incident years later. They had Zelma Davis lip-syncing her parts in their videos.
@clgil77 From 3:15 to 3:46, that's Martha Wash singing, not Rebbie. Martha Wash & Izora Rhodes are also singing on the chorus. Rebbie is just lip-syncing the words, but that's definitely not her voice on that part.
You know, I was listening to this song not too long ago and thinking "no way that can't be Rebbie singing that part" it's clearly just not the same voice from the rest of the song. And sure enough it sounds just like Martha Wash!! How about that.
Still a killer song though. I think Rebbie has the one of the best singing voice in the family.
@clgil77 thats not her, thats a singer called martha wash, check her out on utube if u dont know her.......she had to sue for proper credit for this song and also singing on c&c music factory's gonna make u sweat.
@tmjw69 Are you serious...NOOOOOOOO it cant be - That has always been the part that sold the song for me - So Martha has been doing the Milil Vanilli thang for years eh...Hell! I BE DAMNED!!! Ya'll just killed a part of my childhood! Oh well...go Martha!
@Leo4U80 LOL , So sorry. I bought Rebbie's 1988 album on cassette ( I am dating myself) "R u tuff enough" and I remember thinkin while I was listening '" When is she gonna let loose and scream like Chaka?" When I saw that interview that answered my question.
@Leo4U80 Hey, It was something I saw on VH1 back in the day when the whole Blackbox thing broke out. I just looked above at some post's left by someother people and they are saying it's her. I am not saying rebbie can't sing all I am saying is that IS Martha Wash, Go listen to any of her music, it's the same voice.
hey don't give me a thumbs down because you don't believe. i've always thought it was rebbie too, until i read that it was martha wash, and when u listen u can tell it's martha. this doesn't make rebbie any less talented. she and this song are the SHIT!
starting @ 3:18 she started freakin' breakin' it down!!!. . .i ws NOT aware of the fact tht she could sing like tht!!!. . .most gifted Jackson Sister!
talented no doubt, but those vocals toward the end are Martha Wash and the other Weather Girl (her name escapes me). They and Michael provided the background vocals
Izora Armstead...RIP. When I was little, I totally thought that it was Rebbie belting it at the end, but wasn't surprised when I read that it was Martha and Izora...
dang she can perform as well as Janet. 4 a matter of fact if she wud've wnted 2,i think she cud have been better than Janet. . .her voice is stranger n check out the versatility in her dance moves.
I never knew until today that there was another older sister of Michaels and that she was the one who did this song way back when............. I always learn so much on YouTube!.
Now that i listen to the words it does sound stupid, lol...but back than it sound good. It was slapping so much in all the clubs in SF & Hawaii, it became a hit...I don't know about anywhere else
Her voice was baddass! She cant dance. And she definately doesnt have that Janet/Michael stage presence. And this song was so stupid it was awesome. but so was Thriller. But theres no denying that she (at one time or another) was the best vocalist out of all the Jacksons.
The woman in the background with the strong voice is actually Martha Wash. I believe Michael is singing the background as well.

Jamaicanchocolate34 2 years ago
Yeah she was. and the stage performance wasn't all that they were all of with the dancing. I like that dancing in the video better. Maybe they should have used that instead. lol

Spankeedoodle 2 years ago 4
WOW! I have never seen this! No doubt amongst the 3 sisters, Rebbie Jackson has the strongest voice! Thank you for posting. I agree with the previous comments this joint is SERIOUS!
tjr8165 2 years ago 3
This song is SERIOUS... Period... And Rebbie never really took music as serious as any of her family did... But you tell me why she damn near sings the best. Rebbie can flat out sing
sinofmidmobb 2 years ago 25
@sinofmidmobb ummmm i dont know where u get your info from but Rebbie took singing very serious, she just wasnt popular as her brother and sister, she has toured all her life, did back up, wrote for other artists......she did more than just this song...
jeminijemini 1 year ago
You Go girl, Rebbie!!!!!! To me she's very classie and prettier than Janet. Never seen this performance. Thanks for posting.

Is there anyone of this family who doesn't try to sing?

This was my jam as a kid! Rebbie is definitely the best female singer out of the Jackson clan!

If anyone should make a come back cd it should be Rebbie
Jazcamrob 2 years ago
Rebbie looks so different in this than she does in more recent pics, and even ones of her when she was on the Jackson variety show. Definitely her prime years.

SING IT GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!
ilovenat101 2 years ago
She actually has the best voice of the jackson siblings. Listen from 3:15 to about 4:12
clgil77 2 years ago 13
that's not here singing after the instrumental break. that is Martha Wash. It's credited properly on the Your Faithfully cd from 1998
djtenn 2 years ago
Actually, that's Martha Wash of the Weather Girls singing the ad-libbed part towards the end
knmlover 1 year ago
@knmlover i wonder if it was the record company's decision to pretend like that. i mean i love rebbie but doing it in the video and live lip sync is kinda misleading to the public. it's a great song though always loved it.
mack1820 1 year ago
Probably the record company. Ironically, Martha Wash sued C&C Music Factory for this same incident years later. They had Zelma Davis lip-syncing her parts in their videos.
knmlover 1 year ago
Grow up!; back in the 70's 80's thats what all singers did !!
vertex100 1 year ago
@mack1820 Stevie Wonder did the same thing in "Part time lover" It was Luther Vandross who was scatting in that song.
Koolson1 1 year ago
@clgil77 um, she had her nose done too......
xxjjoseexx 1 year ago
@clgil77 wow yeah she has a hella strong voice.
iloveyoumike1 1 year ago
@clgil77 From 3:15 to 3:46, that's Martha Wash singing, not Rebbie. Martha Wash & Izora Rhodes are also singing on the chorus. Rebbie is just lip-syncing the words, but that's definitely not her voice on that part.
JumpStreet1983 1 year ago
@JumpStreet1983
You know, I was listening to this song not too long ago and thinking "no way that can't be Rebbie singing that part" it's clearly just not the same voice from the rest of the song. And sure enough it sounds just like Martha Wash!! How about that.
Still a killer song though. I think Rebbie has the one of the best singing voice in the family.
pfenix14 1 year ago
@clgil77 thats not her, thats a singer called martha wash, check her out on utube if u dont know her.......she had to sue for proper credit for this song and also singing on c&c music factory's gonna make u sweat.
jeminijemini 1 year ago
@clgil77 That's not her singing that part. That's Martha Wash!
blktenor 1 year ago
@clgil77 Hey bad news, Thats not Rebbie sangin like that but Martha Wash. It's tru, I thought the same thing for year's.
tmjw69 1 year ago
@tmjw69 Are you serious...NOOOOOOOO it cant be - That has always been the part that sold the song for me - So Martha has been doing the Milil Vanilli thang for years eh...Hell! I BE DAMNED!!! Ya'll just killed a part of my childhood! Oh well...go Martha!
Leo4U80 1 year ago
@Leo4U80 LOL , So sorry. I bought Rebbie's 1988 album on cassette ( I am dating myself) "R u tuff enough" and I remember thinkin while I was listening '" When is she gonna let loose and scream like Chaka?" When I saw that interview that answered my question.
tmjw69 1 year ago
@tmjw69 (sad face)...LOL What interview are you referring to? If you have a link can you forward it to me? Thanks buddy...
Leo4U80 1 year ago
@Leo4U80 Hey, It was something I saw on VH1 back in the day when the whole Blackbox thing broke out. I just looked above at some post's left by someother people and they are saying it's her. I am not saying rebbie can't sing all I am saying is that IS Martha Wash, Go listen to any of her music, it's the same voice.

hey don't give me a thumbs down because you don't believe. i've always thought it was rebbie too, until i read that it was martha wash, and when u listen u can tell it's martha. this doesn't make rebbie any less talented. she and this song are the SHIT!
knmlover 2 years ago
starting @ 3:18 she started freakin' breakin' it down!!!. . .i ws NOT aware of the fact tht she could sing like tht!!!. . .most gifted Jackson Sister!
motorcitydanceaholic 2 years ago
talented no doubt, but those vocals toward the end are Martha Wash and the other Weather Girl (her name escapes me). They and Michael provided the background vocals
knmlover 2 years ago 2
Izora Armstead...RIP. When I was little, I totally thought that it was Rebbie belting it at the end, but wasn't surprised when I read that it was Martha and Izora...

bluepeas510 2 years ago
Her voice was baddass! She cant dance. And she definately doesnt have that Janet/Michael stage presence. And this song was so stupid it was awesome. but so was Thriller. But theres no denying that she (at one time or another) was the best vocalist out of all the Jacksons.
blaqmnm 2 years ago
Yes she can dance! Look at her perform "Fever" in the Jacksons variety special!
fulleffect29 2 years ago
