OMG I love Cod ,, it has recently doubled in price, over 4 dollars a pound these days on sale,, and as high as 8 dollars,, that sux,, cuz its really a great fish,, I would eat all the time
@ikambor yeah, you need to pay $8 a pound while the fisherman only get's 50c to 60c a pound, huge price difference for no reason, most cod fillets only go through 2-3 middle men, the price difference should be to such a extreme, so if you think you have it bad imagine how it is for the fisherman, he needs to live on pennies compared to what you need to pay and the majority goes to the fish buyers as absolute profit.
@flamedrag18 Yea its a bunch of bull crap that its such a fucked up market.. but to think that the end consumer doesn't feel it as much is not right,, to sell it for 40-50-60 cents a pound is as bad as having to buy for 8 dollars a pound.. I guess the only difference is to sell it,, you don't have a choice, I have a choice not to buy it,, but that should be either,,
@glockeva dehooked? you can see it in the video, you gaff them, hold them tight against the steel post and the hook pops out, it's the crunching or popping sound you hear with every cod, at least at the beginning of the video.
@loseriffic123 Obviously you don't understand commercial fishing, your comment would be best suited on a video showing a trawler indiscriminately taking all fish, big and small !!! these guy's are practising free lining which takes only the fish required, when was the last time you had cod & chips, were you bothered how it was caught.....didn't think so ;-)
I have a world of respect for the WORKING MAN.....but fuck commercial fishing!!!! the greed of some fisherman is destroying our stocks and long lining and trawling is indescriminate and wasteful!!!! The worlds fish should be FARMED not hunted..... just ask Jaques Cousteau....Dont blow smoke up my ass,I've been around too long, and I have seen what commercial overharvest can do.....
@njmudpuppy it wasnt people like these guys in the video who ruined the fishery...it was mismanagement of the offshore stocks..basically corporate greed...protecting stock holders interests in the seafood companies....this method of fishing was practiced for 500 years since the early 1500's but otter trawling destroyed it in three decades.
@njmudpuppy i found a good video for you to watch search "good redfish catch" and look how much fish they are hauling into the trawler..check it out before you blame these guys for the destruction of the ocean.
@njmudpuppy If gettin up a daft o'clock in the morning to go and stand in the pissing cold rain on a smelly boat out at sea to catch fish to bring back for YOU and I to enjoy isn't a WORKING MAN then I don't know what is !!!!
@chriswhitlow100 ME???? I catch my own damn fish!!!! LOL...... I respect every MANs right to earn a living....l I do NOT respect the greed and indiscriminate waste that occurs in the world of commercial fishing.... I am not targeting these men......I am just disgusted by the wanton waste and over harvest that occurs on a regular basis....
@njmudpuppy long lining is not wasteful, it's likely the most conservative fishing method out there, you can use larger hooks so you only catch the larger ones, allowing smaller ones to grow and you never catch all them with longlining, many continue on living while only a small amount are taken, if you'd actually see the difference in the catches from trawling and longlining, you'd have a different opinion, don't shoot your mouth off about something you know absolutely nothing about.
@flamedrag18 oh really??? Larger hooks??? So long lining doesnt hook any wrong species huh?? Long lining doesnt kill sharks?? Long liners are ALWAYYYYYS so careful as to release sharks unharmed right??? Fish never get hooked and then eaten off the hooks by sharks??? I am not ignorant enough to try to compare trawling and longlining....but commercial fishing management is fucked up
@njmudpuppy I never said they don't catch non target species, but not many, I know of only a few stories of sharks being caught on a cod longline, and if they were, they were caught on the way up, immediately released alive, the snoots are too short for the hook to reach the stomach of the shark, so it's never fatal, and if a shark were caught on the line, the snoot is made of twine, not wire, so they can easily bite through it.
and so what if the fish is eaten off the hook? that's just a loss.
@njmudpuppy longlining is the most manageable fishery, very easily controlled and doesn't catch the smaller fish, allowing the fish to grow instead of being a caught in a net and killed in the process, longlining is very selective instead of taking everything off the bottom. have some common sense or don't try to argue with someone who has actually done it.
@flamedrag18 I'm not trying to argue with you. Many fisherman have great respect for the ocean and the creatures that live in it.,and many do not!!! Maybe you and the crew you worked with were of the former class, but that does not change the fact that commercial overharvest DOES occur, nor does it change the fact that longlining, does cause a certain amount of incidental damage.Turtles, marine mammals, and unwanted sharks often die caught in long liners gear. You're not denying THAT are you??
@njmudpuppy but the interesting thing is that your posting your complaints on a video where your description of longlining is non-existent. it would make sense if you were posting it on a GreenPeace video where they're showing japanese and chinese super long longlines that are meant to catch everything from small fish to large sharks. they're the problem, not the smaller boats like these ones. this is why I'm arguing with you, your post has no reason to be ranting against these legit fishermen.
@flamedrag18 No... you are right. I certainly dont mean to offend fisherman that make their living farming a sustainable fishery such as this. It's things like Japanese overharvest of Tuna, shark finning, and such that PISS ME OFF!!!! I am a recreational angler,so when I catch 40 fluke in a day and only a few,if any, reach the mandated 18 inch NJ size limit,I get aggravated. I can buy all I want at shoprite!! These bullshit quotas are biased in favor of the commercial fishery and THAT is unfair!!
@njmudpuppy Why the fuck do the Japanese just take the fun of a shark and throw the rest of the god dman thing anyway? Don't get me wrong, sharks are interesting sea creatures, but it's just bullshit how the Japanese fish. Not only that but some of them also don't give two shits about repopulation.
Wow, way to make Canadians look like a bunch of inbred, destructive retards!!!! Fucking stupid newfie. Get a real job, you're working to destroy our planet and put even more people out of work once you asshole collapse our fish stocks in the next 38 years.
@Little123Fizz Its not the fisherman who are making canadians look bad. They're trying to feed the world, their families, and themselves. Point your finger at the goverment. I'd also like to know what you do for a living. I garantee you couldn't hack it as a fisherman - its some of the toughest work on the planet.
Nice fishing boys.i wish i could have caught that many the other day on my long line.Don't even think twice about these dumbfucks writing there responses to you they obviously don't have any clue at all about fishing. Keep haulin' in those steakers.
@killer00100 no, the moratorium was lifted in the late 90's, since it's sustainable, the reason people are allowed to recreation fish cod too, they're quotas are being more heavily regulated, allowing them to fish, so how about researching something before ranting your NOOB.
im from port aux basque to well just to the east a bit in burnt islands but we got some good fishin around these parts of the island. that looks like a sucessful
You worry about line "over fishing"? Doesn't make a dent and populations are UP!. How about stopping the US Big Govt from destroying the US economy for the next 20 years with Trillions of debt??? Worry about that!!
line fishing wont do frig all damage i offload boats on a regular basis, this is not bad at all. were undergoing our fishery here on the east coast and you can literaly drop your line anywhere right now and haul up a fish lol, and obviously this man has a license do do this which means its legal, this aint bad you should see a trawler, thats brutal total over-kill with a trawler...
waw, some nice fish there, ive been trying to catch a cod all week in a norwegain fjord, dunno what im doing wrong. shame about all the nasty comments.
@XB70Playboy firstly, the moratorium was for the entire atlantic region of canada, protecting the atlantic codfish, secondly, it was lifted in the late 90's due to stock increases and heavier regulations, now their allowed to fish cod on a restricted quota, it's fully sustainable. do some research next time.

our snowcrabs the same it,s only 98 n miles from newfoundland to cape breton and a few years ago crabs here were 2 dollars a lbs and in cape breton they were over 3 dollars lbs i was traveling around up there and was talking to fishermen from a few places it was even the same buyers up there as here theres not that much difference in the canadain dollar is it
why is black more or is it another game to get it for less like here years back companies would pay more for small salmon then big but it,s all salmon it,s the game sell it for little
Lots of fish, thats nice. I would rather catch thousands of Black cod than thousands of Gray cod though, but here in alaska the price for black cod is close to five dollars a pound and the price for those fucked up gray cod mcdonalds fish sticks is way less, we don't even fetch a dollar a pound for gray cod.
