A true artist can take a piece as slow as possible and still hold the power of the music. This is sooo key to Shostakovich. If you want a great recording with powerful brass ans well kept tempo throughout, I highly recommend Andrew Litton of the DSO on Amazon MP3. Also has piano concerto no.2 and my personal favorite recording of symph.5
Let's see, sound travels slower than light does. The conductor is leading the group... then the sound travels around the hall until it is picked up by the microphone.
i play clarinet and were playing this for symphony (high school) and we arent going as fast and i still thought my brain was going to leak out of my ears so props to these people

Oh jeez, the trumpets were either all using assistants in that opening or are just incredibly awesome.
Definitely one of the best recording on youtube, and I got chills at 3:37, though that part always gives me chills...

Do I hear a wrong note or just very poor intonation at 4:47? :/

@abslch it's intonation... but who cares?

It seems that Russians tried to copy the way that Karajans concerts were recorded.. nice try :))) anyhow, sound is good

sounded like a brief intonation issue right before the final presto

I gave the video 5 stars: but there is one very small problem, and that's that the sound is off by less than a second :p

Looks and sounds about right to me.

You misunderstand me. The problem is a Youtube/uploading error, not a musical one.

I agree with the tempo being a tad slow at the beginning, but man was that added contrast cool!

maybe a little slow at the beginning, but man, this is definitely the most musical recording on of this piece on Youtube.

ridiculous precision and transparency for the speed they are going. so expressive, musical explosions of delight

This is a good performance of it, but I think it was a little too slow at the beginning, and a tad too fast at the quick parts.

I thought this tempo was good. A bit faster in the beginning.
But this is definitely good compared to some of the other ensembles on youtube.

Ah, Svetlanov--GREAT!!!
And he knew what tempos DS wanted.
snaaptaker 4 years ago 8
He knew what tempos D.S. wanted, yet the temp was extremely fast in the original composition...

This one's fast compared to the orchestra. But I like the tempo.
