The Genesis/Mega Drive music always seemed to have this uniquely tinny, gritty quality to it. It works exceptionally well in this tune, and in "Sonic Spinball" as well. It actually 'feels' like being trapped inside a hostile machine; Great stuff!

Freshly recorded a new metal version of Thunder Force IV song Stand Up Against Myself: watch?v=TvCs12UqWvU And a metal cover of metal Squad: watch?v=1Rrq3ffTwuA
Holy fucking crap. I've had the game since I was a wee kid and I've only just heard this music now. Fucking Sega, hiding this gem at the back of an impossible game.
I remember that feeling of burning it up with starforce for 8bit, getting so far, feeling so fliping mad with the power of subconcious concetration when I hear this. It's really quite something to hit the zone in these, Radiant silver gun, thunderforce5, ikugra... Type of games....
I just went and bought this from Aus (ebay) after hearing this for like 30secs, I understand now just how starved my dusty old sega Nomad is. It's time for some grainy master blasting 16bit synthesizing energy with Thunder force IV and the Mighty Nomad. This sounds just so deep to me right now. Makes you love life all over again.
@SonicTheJackrabbit Technically, the SNES is ahead the Genesis, because its sound chipset is more refined and the computer potency is also better, because the SNES was released after the Genesis. The rest is art.
@StyloXD The SNES soundchip is surperior, but to my knowledge the SNES didn't have music that sounded like this, thats why l prefer the Megadrive soundchip, the composers took VGM out of the norm and brung in different genres, from electronic house (vectorman, SOR123 etc) to Metal (TFIV, M.U.S.H.A. etc).
Yes at sampled music. But limited RAM make most games sound like trash. Genesis could have better sampled music but Sega mess that up with wiring the circut board. Genesis can stream samples from the cartridge unlike the SNES.
It's not bad, it just can't pull off as much bass and sharpness as the Genesis. The SNES can produce some pretty damn good sound as proven in the Donkey Kong Country trilogy, the Star Fox series, and Uniracers.
This inspired me to play Thunderforce IV again on the ol' genesis. Man was this game hard, but the music does a good inspiration job, stage 8 was the hardest of the lot, and from the annoying snake thing at the beggining of the level, the ants with lazers all over the floors and cielings, and the fucked up owl at the end, this music had me hooked on ripping the shit out of every mechanical ant and wasp assisted owls with tentacles. I fucking loove this game.
God I'm loving it, as a child is that was dreams are made of or what? Smashing soundtrack flying through space in not any, but THE best spacecraft ever, blasting things to crap?
Man, what system was this game one, how could I miss it!? I only ever had a Mega Drive II (Sega Genesis) PSX and onwards. I remember most games for the music and story, this one sounds like PURE action or reaction! Thanks for the upload.
@cjbgf1 I'm not sure of the names, but I remember loving the metal style ones. Also, another question, I downloaded this from your link and it went into itunes, but the other day i tried listening to it again and it says it cant find it? i dont understand why?

@johneymute They did, but barely. When playing the game, the soundtrack and the combined AWESOME happening in the game would make the track prone to slowing down. You could only get a solid gameplay on emulators years later!
@johneymute I know, I wrote an FM synth just like the YM2612 chip inside and I can't get distortion guitars like here and Langrisser 2 to save my life.
there are only 3 songs that you should play in a mass air combat.

Most of the people seems to only remember of Metal Squad from Thunder Force IV.
But very little people seems to give enough love to the rest of the soundtracks. "The Sky Line" "Sand Hell" and "Sea of Flames" are also among my favorites.
I remember that I almost shitted myself the first time I faced against Rancor (Sea of Flames boss- Stage 7) Almost 10 years later, I still feel a chill going up in my spine every time I face him.
A brillant song. I've played games for 30 years on every possible gaming machine but this song is still a very solid member of my all-time top 5.

malucassovei 2 years ago 3
the advantage of the genesis is despites it can only generate 1 8bit dpcm channel,it can proccese 8bit data
and the fm channels can reach a samplerate of 96 khz.
despites the snes has 8 digital soundchannels.
it can only procces 4 bit data wich is then sampled to 16bit with sample rate of 32khz.
so despites the genesis limmitations it can provide hich dynamic range sound. will snes can only provide flatty sound.
