  • great film, thx

  • tezzo and his farm sell their produce at local schools on weekends at cheap prices and are all naturally grown but still the loss of the farm was an impact on the community

  • nobody did anything wrong here except bicth ass jan perry and tate they scam the city of building soccer fields which all they do is put two nets and thats the soccer field fuck jan perry and her other scemes im from south central and its sad to see there is nothing in the land

  • Well...sorry, but you can't live on land that isn't yours.

  • legal? was it really legal? they had good legal arguements watch the movie. does not matter anyways in the end look what happened. first off the one lady dies of a stroke, the other guy involved with soccer field is being indicted on fraud. The field ended up being an empty lot, the farmers actually got an 80 acre farm outside of Los Angeles selling Organic food to the city. So in the end the rightheous won. I say the Gardeners did win in the end.

  • fuckin gueros and mayates we deal with abuse every day and wen they see us doin positive they just have to fuck it up

  • THIS EVICTION NEEDED TO BE DONE. As a Latino, I sympathize with the farmers. But the Law is the Law. The city of L.A. screwed a private business and misused this land. Mr. Horowitz, despite being a total asshole, had the right to repurchase this land being that it was his (part of it) to start with. We cannot allow the Law to be taken lightly. The city of L.A. is guilty of putting these poor people in an impossible situation and should buy this lot for the community... But thru legal means!!!

  • @alfamax4562 I don't feel it needed to be done. It was the city's fault for selling the land back for the same price. Even the judges before felt that the deal seemed "shady". Mr. Horowitz is just being a selfish businessman, but the city was wrong to sell the land back so that some of the people involved in the project like Jan and the other lady could make a profit.

  • I agree that this is a very interesting project. That it is very positive for the community. I agree that Horowitz did not handle the situation the right (respectful) way. BUT, at fault is THE CITY OF L.A. They are the ones who took this land from a private enterprise and gave it to another group of private citizens and CRUELY put them in a path of collision. THIS IS WHY BIG GOVERNMENT IS NOT AND WILL NEVER BE THE SOLUTION. I feel very sad to watch what has happened here.

  • where is our yustees?

  • where the fuck is The Governator, i;'d be down there if that was my county / state, fucking making sure the gardens are expanded and more of them were put in.

that is exactly what communities should be doing everywhere - re-greening, being more self-sufficient.

  • Never has a movie made me feel so violently angry.

  • Didn't this win an oscar?

  • All emotions came into play with this movie. Happiness, love, anger and more. Money and justice never intertwine. Inspire all to do more!!!

  • Looks like it's Jan Perry against the mainly Hispanic community. Jan Perry wins, the people who voted for her - lose. NEVER elect corrupt people like Jan Perry (who made a back room deal) again!!

  • wow this looks really good

  • the powerful developer is the father of my girlfriend.

  • @kevinkullen My condolences.

  • @Pogs4Fathersday thanks man, we're broken up now. her parents are crazy, you think ralphs bad, if only you knew eileen.

im mexican, eileen hated me for that.

thought i wasnt good enough for shannon.

also i asked shannon about the incident. man theres a whole other side of this story. message me if you want to know.

  • the farmers actually raised over 16million dollars and the bitch bailed out on the deal and decided not to sell the land.

  • We recently watched this in Community Organizing class and I had never cried out loud in front of so many people.. most inspiring documentary - everyone should see this!!!

  • I watched this last night and it was really good. It is sad to see how greed and polotics will kill something that is good and right. Let it be a lesson for all!

  • I just saw this in English class today. It's such a remarkable film. I HIGHLY recommend it!

  • I saw something on T.V. lately on this & heard it was relocated- just wondered how everthings goin since

p.s. Thanks for your reply- Adubb

  • Everyone needs to see this movie and realize that what they obtained there in those 13 acres of land needs to happen all over the country. It is so sad that such a wonderful achievement faced such a disgraceful obstacle.

No es dificil entender la vida saludable. Esta pelicula explica todo que necitamos para vivir con cooperacion y felicidad.

  • Such a great documentary on all levels. I especially appreciate the attention to the details of the struggle; how persistent, smart and hardworking the farmers had to be to go against "the powers that be". Yes, I cried. But, more than that. I was inspired. La vida es toda lucha!

  • Jan Perry is disgraceful. After years of Los Angeles east side not having restaurants because of insurance redlining, the '92 riots changed things. There's now fast food and shopping centers on the east side and then Jan's FAT nasty ass had nerve to say no more. The irony of it all is she shut down an urban garden, with fresh vegetables and then say she's for the community. Have you seen her humongous self lately, she three times the size she was her. She needs veggies more than anyone!!!

  • Just watched this great movie!

  • The Garden: this is what we need more of in our communities, not more corporate bullshitters who've sold their souls to satan for $ and £ - we've already got more than enough of those!

  • whoa. the gardeners are so right

  • Oh man, i didn't know they made a documentary about this. I actually remembered going there months before been evicted, my mom bought some corn leafs to make tamales. It was about 5 years ago or so, its on Alameda st. close by the El Faro Swap Meet/Alameda Swap Meet. It sucks b/c everytime when going to L.A we would pass by here and see the people tending their little piece of land. I don't live exactly in LA, but its was great to see this within an urban city.

  • (continued) Also, if it's un-American to want safe, healthy, affordable food for all, then I'm proud to say I'm un-American. However, I disagree. Even after all the mistakes we've made, we can certainly turn things around. We can become a better America, one that takes care of its people, whether they speak fluent English or not. (Plus, it might do us some good to learn another language. We're not alone on this planet.) We can and must change the way America "works."

  • If they began farming illegally, then of course something was going to hit the fan sooner or later. However, saying they need to "quit criticizing America and learn to live with it" is BS, since there are community gardens sprouting up all over the country, especially in the inner cities, where they're needed most. The biggest problem this country faces is what its first world values have done to the land and its people.

  • The garden was OKed by the city. They didn't start it illegally. It was part of the "resturation" after the riouts.

  • i don't know if i am sad that this happened in this day and age or if i've lost all hope in humanity after watching this film.

  • This goes beyond just kicking people off purchased land. It goes into the economics of eating well. My mother lives in South LA and there are more fast food joints on every corner than markets that offer produce at affordable prices. So what are we saying as a society when we shut down community farms? That only those with money get to eat from the Earth? These folks that tried to feed themselves, are the same people that slaughter the cows and pick the produce that YOU buy at the grocery store.

  • No,i wouldn't giveup, we ALL have to eat... What happened, its been 1 year?

  • The organization relocated to Bakersfield, about 100 miles or so north, and now they operate at farmers markets and offer CSA boxes to the larger LA community. But who knows what the individuals that grew food in South Central.

  • I just watched the movie and it sucks what happened. Even more if they had to move a 100 mls out! Then it doesn't help the community any more? That is really sad. The "enviros" should ask what kind of "carbin footprint" is being done by trucking the vegs. back to South Central instead of haveing the garden right there! It all comes down to money anyway.

  • Muy buena la pelicula-documental. Increíblemente verídica i emocionante.

    Arriba los Jardines Urbanos

    *Crisksas*

  • Please read the "ringing cedars collection"

This is devastating what they done to this community garden.

  • Whoever owns the land should be able to do whatever they want with it as long as they are not infringing on anyones individual rights by doing so.

  • Comment removed

  • Ownership as in i am the legally recognized deedholder of this property. Now if you want to say that the arrangement made for the owner to acquire this land is f-d up go ahead. Why should the owner have to pay property taxes to let a bunch of strangers use his land. He should be aloud to put a giant statue of a dildo up if he wants to.

  • I was there on the farm when this all happened, camping out every night and doing whatever I could to help save it. The destruction of the South Central Farm was the most racist, greedy, and backwards thing I've ever witnessed in America. Antonio Villaraigosa should be caned (Singapore style) and Ralph Horowitz should be flogged.

  • so if someone else builds a warehouse and a parking lot, will "we" have to pay "whomever" $5.00 to park there? interesting.

  • i am sick of people who say"oh its sucks but whatever, its the real world." people accept the reality they think is okay. Dont be one of those people who just stands by and says, "oh, stuff like this sucks, but its reality, you cant to anything." those people do NOTHING. NOTHING. NOTHING. NOTHING to benefit humankind by saying that. If you think something sucks, change it!

  • it is a very good movie. it shows what people perceive what america is like, and what it's really like....all about money.

...and 2 years later...nothing has been built on the land.

  • Sucks but welcome to the real world, stuff like this happens so whenever you own land you MAKE SURE you have it in writing and not just the space

  • THTS WRONG N SICK!

god i need to c this doc. IMMEDIATLY!

  • This is an incredible story it gives me chills. How DARE they those corrupt city assholes.

  • RATE everything. EMBEDS count as VIEWS.

GOVERNMENT and CORPORATION'S are Watching You.

    SHOVE IT in their face.

And, tell everyone to RATE everything everywhere when You have nothing to COMMENT.

  • I'm angered and dumbfounded. This is just another example of how destructive greed can be to society. If you take hope away what will be left. The last thing they need is another warehouse. "Pave paradise and put up a parking lot" as the saying goes. Thanks for getting this story out as it is so important that all people have a voice regardless of race or income.

  • Destructive greed? Possibly, but if you're pinning your hopes and dreams on vegetables, it's seems pretty thin to me. Your definition of paradise is only one definition. Paradise is defined by the individual. For someone else, a warehouse that generates income enough to build their own version of paradise is infinately better than paying $25,000 monthly for someone else's corn.

  • Frizzo, you're a nationalist, conformist, propertarian dickhead. You're exactly the kind of phony, gladhanding twink who ruined an entire school of music. I hope you acquire an acute, extremely painful skin disease. Oh, and your music sucks.

  • hey cuz u is wack my nigg get ur pale white cracker wanna be thug on outta here cuz

  • thank you scott hamilton kennedy for making this film, for your passion and dedication to this struggle, for giving us the facts, and most importantly for telling the story of the farmers.
