The two styles are Angola and Regional. Angola is the original capoeira and is played closest to the way the black slaves used to play it, strategically with sneaky movements to catch out the other player, so it was very unpredictable. In Regional Mestre Bimba removed things he thought were useless in a real fight and removed lots of acrobatic stating that a capoeirista should have at least one hand or foot on the floor at any time. It became focused on attack and counter attack with a high lev
Capoeira is purely Brazilian. Capoeira is a word from Tupi language (native brazilian indians), which means vegetation that grows after putting a forest down. It was never born in Africa. It was created here in Brazil by african slaves. Try travelling to Angola and asking if they know Capoeira.
check again, it's roots are in Africa. and it is a black people's art, not an american indigenous one. I'm just repeating what I heard from a mestre in a presentation i attended about the history of capoeira.
im not a researcher or a historian. But the little i know about caopeira's origins i learned when i attended a small presentation given by Mestre Cobra Mansa. And his opinion as an anthropologist and capoeira mestre is that capoeira can be divided into two main styles, the style that was brought from Angola, which has the same name as the country, and the style that developed in Brazil, but i cant remember the name. The latter one is more "jumpy".The first one is said to be more realistic for a fight
I started this Capoeria group a few months ago, it's really great - and this isn't proper cap in this video, it's just the guys sititng back and doing some tricks.
Of course they're just tricking but those movements are also compelled in capoeira techniques. There are another videos were you can see brasilian people ( the good ones) practicing capoeira. Those are great! I practice but will never get to that level!
What they are doing right now isn't Capoeira in my mind, it is simply what is called 'tricking'. Perhaps they may do a couple Capoeira techniques every once in awhile but these are short clips are tricks, not actual Capoeira. I have no doubt in my mind that these guys do Capoeira but right now they're just tricking.
the music has nothing to do with capoeira and there are some parts where is people just doing gymnastics, the only ones "doing" capoeira are the ones in the park or something like that, but capoeira is much more than just backflips and jumps
yes this is capoeira. These guys train in Sydney Australia. Keep in mind that thisclip was done for Bilang.com and thus was edited specifically for the site. Check out more of their stuff at www.capoeiracre.com/oz/videos.htm
Alright! Now lets see someone do the Street fighter move known as "Tatsu Maki Senpuu Kyaku" or whirlwind hurricane kick. 3 or more spinning hook kicks in the air.
Hey man nice video, The guys there are some Good capoeiristas.. Cool that we in the same Group, Im with Capoeira Brasil NYC- Newyork....www.capoeirabrasilnyc.com
Só porque eles estão fazendo truques neste vídeo não significa que eles não conhecem capoeira

To convolute this discussion ever further, from my understanding, Capoeira evolved from different African arts and cultures.
So Capoeira itself was never in Africa, but many of the fundamentals or the "Building Blocks" of Capoeira came from various African tribes.

Isn't Capoeira more about fighting/dancing/playing than just floor exercises?
Good athletes, though.
