In addition to the seat belts how about a cage around the operator seat so the operator doesn't fall out in a tip over. The cage has a door and a switch on the door that means the truck won't start unless the door is fully closed. Maybe a switch in the seat too, so if there's not an operator in the seat, the truck doesn't start up and when the operator releases their weight from the seat, the truck stops.
forklifts are just like cars , when the person is stoned or drunk or speeding or driving recklessly an accident is inevitable. so many workers here in brisbane australia are high when opperating forklifts.random drug testing needs to be carried out at every single factory by law.
@gasmylife the problem isn't so much drugs and alcohol as plain old stupidity. there should be some kind of stupidity test for heavy machinery jobs. there are some people in this world who are just log stupid when it comes to safety. they take shortcuts, work too quickly or fail to recognize a potential accident and thereby prevent it. it's the same kind of people that drive cars like idiots. people who speed, tailgate, weave in and out with no blinkers will eventually get in a wreck. idiots.
i was just searching fork lift accidents and low and behold i find this video ..... i work at this place and ppl talk about this accident all the time ..... apparently he got his head crushed by the top part of the cage of the forklift ..... ppl say he jumped out he wasnt thrown out
@DeathByDodge happened at my work, the boy tried jumping to safty and got trapped on the tp art of the cage. we jacked the forklift up and saved his life.. he has bleeding lngs and broken bones.. lucky guy
Happened me today. i drove behind a lorry to check to see what it had on.. the driver started to reverse even tho he was clearly stopped and obviously didnt look in his mirrors & me and my workmate blew at him about 20 times he just kept reversing. he hit the forklift and knocked it over with me inside. It was the scariest moment of my life, i have a forklift license and done all the courses, when something like that happens its hard not to just go blank..
@cheetawolf sadly to say considering the size of the forklift it probably was not instant and took at least a good 3 minutes but yet being crushed slowly for three minutes until you die may feel like ten minutes but i hope it was instant and that he didnt suffer
one guy at my work, tipped over a stack of empty boxes, the top one from about 4 meters tipping down on the head guard on the truck, ( weighing 60 kiloes) the fool raised his hands to protect his head or something as a reflex, but THROUGH the friggin head guard.. broke his finger.. might as well been his whole hand
i was putting a rack of glass on the shelving at work, maybe 15-20feet up. and the strap hook popped off on one side and a 4x6 unit came falling down over my head.. lucky it was tempered glass it broke on the head guard on my forklift gave me a few minor cuts. scared the shit out of me though was LOUD too.
i was the only first aid attendant too that crossed my mind lol.
When I was younger, me and a buddy were horsing around on a forklift. He either was a true professional (Not likely, I found out he was on meth later) or God was watching over me, but I could have been killed. The seriousness of how quickly things can and do go wrong so often escapes people, it's sad and tragic.
my dad operated one of the first skidsteers and it dident have a roll cage, and he was constantly driving up to a foundation ledge to dump things into it, then wen he went on break a younger guy jumped on and drove it into the fricken basment and was squished flatter than a pancake. just imagine, he told me he could never look at a peice of mechinery withought a rollcage again.
You are definitely right on that one. About 20 years ago when in college I was operating a highstacker machine which had an upright reach of almost 40 ft. One time the forks missed teh spot and tipped the skid toward aisle. I saw three full size chest of drawers starting to tip. My first instinct was to run, but i remembered my training and stayed in the cage. Good thing. Because they the cage and all aroudn the machine. Trying to run meant have a 100 lb object land on your head from 40 feet.
You can see the orb of the mans ghost in the 3rd frame @ 15sec top (R) & another bottom (R) by the oil stains , the 6th frame @ 30sec above the forklift, 9th 51sec at the bottom near middle. Thats what happen when you go before your time and don't know your dead.
I was fortunate. I was pinned between equipment when a driver came speeding around a corner frontways and hit me and the equipment I was driving. I'm depressed and disabled now, but I'm alive.
I recently left a company due to their forklift policies. Any employee could drive, no license or training required. Damaged forklifts were used until they broke down, that refers to brakes, hydraulics, lights, horns ANYTHING; until the machine stopped moving and lifting it was used. Accidents, be them major or minor required NO reporting and resulted in no action being taken. I had my left foot run over by a 10,000lb lift, luckily my steel toes [also not a requirement] only bent into my foot.
yada yada yada , i used to drive a forklift and work overtime at nights when the boss left, and me and another guy used to play "dueling" forks!! it was so much fun! crunch!!!!
Actually, they are suposed to have the rear sensor alert on so that when a driver is coming you are supposed to hear the forklift and get out of the way. Guy hit me cuz he was driving forks forward. Thank God they were down or I'd be dead.
You can never be too careful when you drive forklift: This is what I always remind myself each time I drive one. I really feel for the guy that lost his life.
the risk assement was verry poor the h&s manager wants to get his asskicked for this i am a h&s rep for my company f/l are verry dagerous in the worng hands uk law states if its dangerous and u are puting your self @ risk dont do it please think b 4 doing any thing do your own risk assement it only takes a few mins to think this could be the choice between life and death would u want some one knocking on your door and them telling u your partner and or your kids that u are dead i would not THINK
I work in a warehouse and our forklifts will not start without the seatbelt fastened and the engine will shut off if the seatbelt it unfastened, we haven't had this forever though and about 15 years ago we had someone who was crushed to death in a similar situation.
Some of those Forklifts out there dont seem to have enough Counter-Balence for those heavy lifting jobs some of them do. You would think that they would becouse they are used to pick up big things.
I used to work at a Warehouse. One of their forklifts was a short little bugger.
It was being used by a employee who lifting a truck bed with my friend close to it. The fork lift tipped forward and my friend was cought under it and got baddly injured.
I drive this exact machine and they are nice forklifts the problem was the ramps and probably rushing due to employer production schedule and yes lighting. If you roll or tip hug the steering wheel with all your might brace your feet under the dash and roll with it it will hurt but if you try to jump this is what happens. and it happens fast.
I agree. I've been at it for about 6 years and have tried training several people that just don't get it. However, I am guilty too. I don't wear my seat belt. If that bitch goes over I'm headed off the high side fuck riding it out.
That's not so dumb as it seems. In my country it is obliged by law to use safety belts or safety doors -they do exist- in forklifts. You get used to them and you will be thankfull for having them, if your forklift tips over.
oh shit i know. i drive naamco standup ones and i have came so close to tipping one over before at work out back where the pavement is shit. its not a good feeling at all. fuck my heart was pounding after that.
i drive a raymond standup lift but it is next to impossible to tip it over, you can get one of the wheels off the floor but thats about it. the only way you can tip it over is if you have a load on the forks
never operated a sit down lift. we use the stand up ones which i would probably say are safer. you corner differently when your standing than you do when your sitting
I almost toppled mine over on a regular turn once, and I wasn't even carrying anything. Lift was new and maintenance never lowered the top speed on it before putting it out for use on the floor.
A forklift is more likely to tip over in a turn when you are not carrying anything than when you are carrying something. Slow down when making a sharp turn.
Ive been driving fork lifts for about 5 years now. When these start to tip, trust me, its very scarey. The frist (And LAST!) time that I felt my truck tip (Ground problems, pot holes) I nearly wet my self

@undeadnightorc True. But that doesn't keep you from using your seat belt.
Just fasten the damned belt. Don't worry about whether it makes you look like a wuss, or whether it will "slow you down". Just do it.
