No CTRL-F, no updated information, no light to see at night, only one set of information per BOOK, it's files can be easily broken, no multimedia, no sound, no interactivity, no clean user input, you need to carry more than one for different sources of information.
@leonalms That's what a computer is for. The critic in the video concerns the e-book stuff, like Kindle, that copies a book in its function. The video shows that a book has several advantages over these e-books, i fully agree with that. You are trying to compare a book with a computer; it's like comparing a bycicle with a car; the bycicle doesn't have an engine, isn't that fast, is not that comfortable, but, hey, it's a bycicle, it's not ment to be like a car, no point in comparing them.
@fabiocarl740 Actually, the kindle does have light, word search, updating, more than one book per kindle, clean user input and multimedia. I think that the Kindle is trying to replace the bookshelf and the book-stand, because the book itself is what you get inside the kindle.
@leonalms No technology is perfect. You have to choose the one which best suits your needs in a given situation. "No one single answer is ever the answer"
And he doesn't said much yet ... With BOOK you don't have a heart attack when it falls off the table or coffee is spilled on it. Nothing happens to BOOK even if it stays in the car's windshield in the heat for half an hour ... You can give your BOOK to your friend so she can read it while you're reading another BOOK, (psshhh multireading ...)
@IAmThinkTank It's not a virus, the B.I.B.L.E. was written in a hidden code that requires the reader to first contact the author wirelessly and directly, which will then lead to a lifetime streaming download (free subscription) of the knowledge base that will decode and apply many bug fixes to this unique binary creation. @ all those those electronics fanatics: you realize that all the crap that electronic devices are made off is highly toxic and maybe 5 out of 100 devices are recycled ? If you dont use exotic trees but recycled paper or paper from sustainable forestry the book always will win at least until envrionmentally friendly electronics are iventend and can be recycled 100%. Please think about it.
@Iverbraidhead I'm so sorry disappointing you but the paper is not always recycled but mostly it is burned and transformed to a more toxic element called CARBON. There are very few people who actually recycle the book. Instead the electronic ways for the moment are the best solution to achieve information that you want to reach, it is taking less space instead of entire libraries a simple handset that occupies just a few millimeters and the advantages are so much more... Think about it.
I do all the things you said you could do with a book on my Nook. It too has pages, with numbers, and gifts of information. It is si portable that it holds hundreds of different sets of information. You obviously have no experience with an e-reader, given the conceitedness of your video. I read BOOKS too. Long live the book! But I have a library in my hand right now, and I can choose to read one of hundreds of books. And I don't have to go ANYWHERE. I just choose. Period. Give it a try.
@karamid Oh for heaven's sakes. You have zero sense of humour, right? I really suspect that someone hip enough to make this subtitled youtube video, with a straight face, actually owns an e-reader, and not only that, is versed in all the language used to sell them, as witnessed in this video. But he seems to understand and use technology, AND make a tongue in cheek video extolling the virtues of books as if they are brand new technology. I'd hardly say it is "conceitedness" but perhaps wit. non?
@jopemora Indeed, they do require trees, but I don't think books lead to a lot of logging. One book lasts 100 years and requires very little "tree". You probably use more "tree" on toilet paper in one week. However, computer monitors require all kinds of natural resources, get used for 2 years and then sit in a garbage dump for 10,000 years.
@wetink70 '"One book lasts 100 years and requires very little "tree". You probably use more "tree" on toilet paper in one week. Not only that, but growing trees HELPS the environment, fixing excess carbon, cooling warming, stopping erosion, providing habitat for animals for decades before harvest. Vs mining metals and pumping petrol for plastics for computers
@jopemora actually that is not true: they are more likely to make dams that flood brazilian forest for power for ebooks. Regular books usually use deciduous trees planted, which is actually good for the environment. Without the demand for trees for book, they are more likely to strip mine, cut forest for factories or cattle etc, that will make up the lost crop revenue.
but the one and only single BOOK feature that really kills all tablets etc is not mentioned: data in a book will be much much longer available than on any whatever disk or flash mem, thanks to the Egyptians for that !!!
@beires 'but the one and only single BOOK feature that really kills all tablets etc is not mentioned: data in a book will be much much longer available than on any whatever disk or flash mem"... you are absolutely right. I have docs not 10 yrs old that are unreadable... a whole stack of stuff on floppy disc, files that need earlier OS, etc etc. Heck, an iPad can't even read a Flash file and it is current. In 200 yrs, this age will be seen as a historical black hole, with no way to retrieve data.
@beires you're calling modern technology "roses"? Anyways, roses are highly overrated. There are a million beautiful flowers that have no thorns. But I really do think that getting rid of hard copy is an issue from a historical point of view, and when I mean historical, it can be something as simple as my own business not being able to access important files from 10 yrs ago, not just museums 100 yrs from now. It is a major failing in the technology that it needs paper as a backup.
@artistcolor few years ago I lost my first pix and vids stored on cheap cd-rom :( bye bye sweet holiday memories ... now storing new stuff on external harddrives and recopying each x years ... for videos this is the only solution
Haha.. That was great. The "BOOK" is still the BEST portable reading device for the beach bar none! I LOVE these rugged little reading devices! Surf, sand & sun play havoc on my Kindle & Nook.. these "BOOK" things can really take a beating & still keep working!
@shadaik Well, considering the last software I bought was not sharable, and Amazon has been known to RETRACT books from people's kindles if there is an issue, even if you HAVE bought it... whereas a book you can lend it out forever, photocopy it, cut out pages, go back and reread it 50 yrs from now, give it to your grandchildren (personally I get coffee table colored photo books from the library excess book sale 50 cents apiece)... ask your friends to lend you their faves, go to the library, =$0
Can it be possible that we should have to make the younger generations watch this, for them to enjoy what we've been enjoying since children? Wonderful, very creative!
I am that generation, and yet I have to say that BOOK weighs more than my air carrier would allow me to carry. BOOK occupies so much space in my house that I need a bigger house. BOOK seems to be favoured by mice, too, and mould. So I moved most of my BOOK contents onto Kindle, and I now carry my whole holiday reading (plus my notemaking equipment) in my wallet.
I still buy BOOK very often, except now I do so increasingly in .pub and pdf versions.

Ah, BOOK WAS a revolutionary item, and it is still what I buy very often, except now I do so increasingly in .pub and pdf versions.
@BERNERAUS anywhere a book would mold, would be unfriendly to an ereader too. You can leave a book in the blazing hot sun, drop it into the pool and then dry it out under a phone book with a stack of encyclopedias and it will be still readable (oh, and a stack of encyclopedias can weigh down something that needs to dry flat, or you can stand on them to change a lightbulb... try that with an ereader!) But yeah, they each have their uses. I wouldn't read my ereader in the bath or the rain.
Ingeniously simple and sarcastic! Uses a very modern way to mock the modern way of life and convey an important message. A huge BRAVO to its creators.
Great idea, but it will never take off. For one thing, Steve Jobs will probably claim copyright on the name 'Book'...and where will the content come from? A nice product but it hasn't been thought through properly...
Hah, being from Texas and speaking spanish, it's always curious for me to hear a Spaniard accent. I spent the first minute of the video trying to figure out what language he was speaking until I realized I understood what he was saying :)
I happen to be using my BOOK right now. However, I want to jailbreak it and I'm not sure how to...are there any videos online detailing how to do this?
im not sure.... my iphone that takes charge, and only lasts 1 hour, and feels like im getting scraped at on the back of my eyes by a angry bear when i read it is pretty nice... im not sure that im ready for such a device...
@crumbinator "Most people would have to use some electricity to read this type of device at night." That's ok, I actually can't look at my computer in the dark either, as it is so bright and the room is so dark, it hurts my eyes. But mostly I have the light on anyways, in order to see my coffee cup, my slippers, not to bump into furniture, find my pen...
Looks like some of the people didn't get it. This ain't no advertisement of a specific product or device. It is simply encouraging the people to read books and to see the eternal advantages of the paper written knowledge.
Regarding the folks who disliked this video I will paraphrase Jan Hus: "O holy simplicity!"
May someone help me? I bought one yesterday and i seems broken, i doesn't seem to allow me to import new information as i can't find where is usb jack? Is that firmware problem or it is current version hardwer issue? I also can't find format button as i don't like information currently provided with basic version i bought? Does anybody know any good addons yet?
The original text was written by the great writer, cartoonist and Brazilian intellectual Millor Fernandes. Unfortunately they "forgot" to mention this. Original title: L.I.V.R.O.
I understand your point of view but it's not that simple. Sure current technology is wasteful and increasingly overpriced, but books are made from trees and over-logging is already a worldwide issue. Also, keep in mind that books are heavy, bulky, and to be distributed, they require means of transportation that also consume large amounts of energy.
I think the technology, in this context, is headed in the right direction. Better energy sources are needed and planned obsolesce must be halted
I've heard that there's a way to access multitudes of books of this type, free of charge, apparently utilizing some type of "Cloud" technology. Just Google "Local Public Library."
I've also discovered BOOK comes in different colours and even has thousands of 'skins' to choose from. Not only that, BOOK is available in any written language. What a fantastic piece of technology and no irritating 'beep-beeps'
I heard about these a few years ago- I was a bit nervous at first, being used to computers and so on, but now they seem positively primitive compared with BOOK! The best thing about it is how you can go back to the beginning with no re-loading.
Excellent! Americans might even go for Book if we switched to your pronunciation (rhymes with Duke). Almost makes it sound avant garde. Back to the Future with Book!
Thumbs up if u needed more than the first 1.30 min of the video to realize for sure that that's INDEED an old-fashioned book and not a new magnificent apple-microsoft-sony device.
I got one of these a while back, and it fell apart with use. I didn't get the extended warranty, so I'm out of luck! Anyway, the search function needs to be fixed with the next patch, as it is very slow and buggy. :(
@00cm You gotta buy a good one... I've had my French English dictionary (softcover) since 1981, and use it daily and it is still going strong. I agree the search function on most books sucks, and really depends on whether the programmer has adequately guessed your search needs. On the other hand, easily fixed oneself with a sort of stylus called a pencil, once you have found the info or lucked upon it while reading, you can program in your saved searches instantly and permanently.
@artistcolor Yes, but the dictionary version is a single-purpose search engine! And even then, it can take time to find what you need, plus, if you want updated or more specific information, if you have to buy a whole new BOOK. I'm not sold...

Are they making a white version too? That would go sooo nicely with my new purse! I also heard of this awesome storage accessory called BOOK-shelf, it's supposed to be really classy!

@23I Maybe you must update the little hardware that holds the BOOK. It is the main problem !

LOL I love it!

I got one of these a while back, and it fell apart with use. I didn't get the extended warranty, so I'm out of luck! Anyway, the search function needs to be fixed with the next patch, as it is very slow and buggy. :(
00cm 1 year ago 7
@00cm
It fell apart with extended use, right? Also, the search function tends to depend a great deal on the user. No patch will fix a defect in the user.
A1l2l2e2n4 1 year ago
@00cm You gotta buy a good one... I've had my French English dictionary (softcover) since 1981, and use it daily and it is still going strong. I agree the search function on most books sucks, and really depends on whether the programmer has adequately guessed your search needs. On the other hand, easily fixed oneself with a sort of stylus called a pencil, once you have found the info or lucked upon it while reading, you can program in your saved searches instantly and permanently.
artistcolor 3 months ago
@artistcolor Yes, but the dictionary version is a single-purpose search engine! And even then, it can take time to find what you need, plus, if you want updated or more specific information, if you have to buy a whole new BOOK. I'm not sold...
