@PeachCombatArms RIGHT YOU ARE! I must commend this player for staying calm though, because shock can speed up the process and kill people. Quick reactions saved this man!
@PeachCombatArms RIGHT YOU ARE! I must commend this player for staying calm though, because shock can speed up the process and kill people. Quick reactions saved this man!
Malarchuk somehow left the ice under his own power with the assistance of his team's trainer, Jim Pizzatelli. Many spectators were physically sickened by the sight with seven fainting and two suffering heart attacks.
I was not there but this is what it says on google.
I don't think he even felt it, he was in shock and no he didn't die. If a human loses more than 2 Litres of blood, then you die. Luckily he didn't lose 2 Litres of blood, he lost about 500ml - 1L
I felt a bit strange when I clicked the "I like" button....I also noticed that it's a Blue's player who helped the doctor to get to the scene and this Blue's guy was skating really fast! But hockey players aren't as stupid as everyone thinks. The guy from the Blues knew some serious shit was going on.
@DavidVillaFan2010 Yes and no. Yes because he could have easily died (ok you knew that I'm sure) but no because Malarchuk pinched his artery and he was able to stop the blood from squirting.
@DavidVillaFan2010 You're right. But the main factor that kept Clint alive is that he didn't seem to panic. He certainly understood that he was in great danger but he reacted calmly, find out the artery and pinched it.
@domdom111111 Yeah if I were him I would have no idea what to do. I would probably think of pinching it or something but I wouldn't react quick enough.
I remember when I was a kid and I was playing hockey in an organised league, the neck protector was mandatory. The fact that's not mandatory in the NHL will lead eventually to another accident like this one and Zednik's one. Will Gary Bettman will wait until a player dies on the ice to made it mandatory?
@TheTrickster626 he survived but that was really serious. if the trainer hadn't been a former medic in vietnam odds are he would have died. also if the blade had cut half an inch higher he would have died in 2 minutes without question.
@swissbird101 Why did you reply to me after 8 months :P yeah and i know what you said is true but it was pretty minor he is more or less VERY LUCKY there would be a HUGE puddle of blood in seconds but its a good job he knew what to do slightly pull his neck down so the blood was decreasing coming out
I am a goalie and I play 2nd year Bantam. I have a neck guard attatched to my chest protecter (via velcro), a separate neck gaurd, and a plastic shield. I wear all of that just because of this (kind of....). When my coach told me I should try taking off the plastic shield to try it without it, I was like: F*** NO!!!
@airbusandmustang dude, no matter wut you do, never take off htat plastic shield....when i was in 1st year bantams, my coach took a slapshot at my goalie from the blue line next to the boards and the puck hit the goalie in the neck and split his neck guard in 2.
id take the 2 velcro guards off but keep that plastic one on
@lacrossemaster31 I still keep all neck guards on... just for safety. Wow, can't believe I wrote that comment 9 months ago. I wrote that just after I got my girlfriend pregnant. Now I have a baby boy! Just kidding, lol. And cool, I got 10 thumbs up on it.
He means neck protector. HECC approved neck protectors are mandatory in youth USA hockey and in canada too I think. They don't demand them at drop ins. though.
i don't think neckgaurds are enforced at any level above minor hockey. I know they are optional in Junior, and optional in the NHL. The only NHL goalie who I've noticed wears one is Toskala
It was Steve Tuttle's skate that made the contact with Malarchuk's neck. But as horrific as this is, Malarchuk survived. Bengt Åkerblom was not so lucky in 1995.
That and the luck of Malarchuk's being at the end of the Aud where the exit was (the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium only had one exit---behind the goal where Malarchuk was). If he was at the other end, Malarchuk would have died.
He's not dead. In fact, he accidentally shot himself with his shotgun last year (in the neck, no less!). He's...uh...a rather lucky, but unlucky individual.
