@toddratkosky no it doesnt well i mean if you put raps and stuff on their legs and do it in soft dirt. but some horses really love to do it and dont care if it hurts they practice any way. my moms horse will gallop around the pasture and do slide stops in the hard dirt with no wraps for hours. she uses him for trails and just for fun barrels but he is a finished reining horse witch is really kool cuz you can show off with him really easy.(by spining, slide stops, amazing neck reining and stuff)
(continued) toes stick out when jumping (I'm saying all this because I know how hard it is, and my instructors have given me a ton of crap about it) cute vid tho!
(continued) toes stick out when jumping (I'm saying all this because I know how hard it is, and my instructors have given me a ton of crap about it) cute vid tho!
Are these pictures and videos you? It's a great video! Just a little bit of critique in terms of your equitation over jumps (mind you, you're a great rider, I'm just trying to help) I noticed that you're pinching with your knee a little bit too much instead of with your thighs, which is causing your lower leg to slip back and it's causing you to jump ahead a bit (in some pics, not all.) You should also try to bend at the hip more and break over your horses neck, and remember not to let those
Good luck on all of your goals! I know you can do it =) Ambition is the key to success, keep working hard and find a great coach. I have aspirations to be at Grand Prix in 3 years =)
@leptocephali ~anyhthing is possible as long as you work hard, we wouldnt be anywhere in this world without people who believed in them selves and worked there asses off and stayed positive
Wow that was great!! How many years have you been riding... I also ride english i can canter and jump 2ft..(not very high) and all that..but i saw a pic of me riding..(looked horrible) i just never look pro. i look like im riding for the first time.. Any tips PLZ!!!
trust me, although you can jump in a western saddle, go too high and it hurts a lot!!! i did a puissance kind of thing once with a western saddle and when the jump got to 4ft I got whacked by the saddle horn. then the next jump I tried not leaning down like i would in my own english saddle and it really hurt my back. btw, it could just be me because I only ever ride western when I visit my cousins in Nevada. I ride english with my own horse
i just achived one of my riding goals yesterday! I got to canter a horse! Now i shall be hoping to complete my next goal! I shall jump a horse, only a ride western, sooooo.....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
OK, I'm a cowgirl and I never understand the point of english saddle. A western saddle or bare back is just as good. If its all about being proper in the saddle then hey good luck.
@RowdyRedneckz english saddles arent just used to look proper. if u jump in a western saddle u cant two point that far becauseof the horn. and english saddles are llighter
also there is NO way you can ride a cross country course in a western saddle. the horse would get to tired and its dangerous for the rider. each saddle has its purpose. english is for quick light riding and demanding riding. like jumping and dressage. western is for hard working and tough jobs. like working with cows, barrel racing, and riding the trail for a long time. sure you can cut cows in a english and you can jump in a western. but its better for horse and rider to use the right saddle.
@jumpergirls Erm, barrel racing gives you about 17 seconds, idk how that's very long, and it's extremely demanding. I think barrel racers use Western saddles because we need the extra ability to dig our feet in when a horse is whipping you around turns as fast as possible.
@luvzbearz44 I suspect it's as much tradition as anything else -- similar events are done at english-style gymkhanas. Good riding and a good seat will keep you on board!
@iloverats612 - Some western saddles are hornless. They have only the pommel and I have jumped in a western saddle, the horse was fine. It shouldn't depend on the saddle your in...it depends on the horses training and the competency of the rider. A good horse and rider can do anything in any type of saddle...even bareback.
@MightyStrongMommy That is very true, but it is easier to get in the correct position to jump a 48" jump in an english saddle, and I think it is easier to work cattle or barrel race in a western. I have jumped in all types of saddles and bareback, and done speed training in an english and training truely is the key, but you don't want equipment that gets in yours or the horses way.
@iloverats612 actually we dont jump western because FIRSTLY the skirt on the western saddle cuts into the horses spine when it starts jumping and bending, and you'll end up with a sour and very sore horse. secondly because of the reason you listed. putting your confort infront of your horses is not only unhorse-person like but also quite dangerous, because a sore horse can easily get you pitched into a walll.
@iloverats612 :D yea...was doing an english lesson once and i was one a greenie so I had a western saddle on him (he had a tendency to buck - hard). Well...I had to show my girls what I meant over the jump and well...my bra got caught on the horn when I went into two-point and broke! It was rather awkward but my girls thought it was funny. Right saddle for the right discipline.
english is not only good for jumping. but there is no way you can do professional dressage in a western saddle. the way it puts your seat you cant ask for the right aids of the horse. a english saddle is not only light but the horse can feel your seat much better than western. and english is also fancy. but so is western. there is nothing wrong with western. i love it. but there is nothing wrong with engilish too.
@jumpergirls actually you can do it in a western saddle.I watched a horse show were they switched professional dressage riders with western riders.was funny
@jumpergirls You can sit correctly in a western saddle, I'm an english rider, and spent a summer in a western saddle, It takes a correctly fitting saddle for both horse and rider to get a correct position, doesnt matter if its an english, western or even australian saddle.
@jumpergirls my friend started english then she said she was to lazy to post and stuff so she went to westrn after about a year she said the saddle was to hevy so she went to bareback, and about 3 years later, at 13 she has the best seat of anyone i know and she does drasage bareback on her horse and ive seen her do it in a westrn saddle too so if your horse really really knows the Q's then i think you can do drasage in a westrn saddle. (the first part is just how awsome she is)
In case you were wondering, riding english is merely another way to improve your understanding and balance with your horse. I am a barrel racer, however I also ride bareback and jump. The more versatile you are in your seat, the better rider you will become. Ever tried barrel racing/pole bending without stirrups? It'll improve your balance and connection with your horse the same way english will. "Proper" has less to do with anything, than "Feel." ^_^
The one and only time I ever rode poles bareback was probably the second most thrilling moment I have ever had on horseback. Second only to jumping without reins, hands on hips, eyes closed!
@RowdyRedneckz I've ridden both disciplines, in cutting, barrels, and I've also ridden reigning horses. But I've taken jumping lessons since the 5th grade. You should try sitting an English saddle, because with out the deep set of a western saddle, you actually have to have your own dependent seat. I love to go back to English because it makes my balance stronger and in the end my riding better when I ride western. I love both, and you should keep open to something until you try it. Just saying
@BlueSkye4 I wasn't being mean. Theres a difference between mean and not understanding. I am upfront and to the point about things and sometimes it sounds wrong. Now if I was being mean, I would've popped off some sarcastic and negative remark about english, but I didn't. I stated that I didn't understand. So... No need to point fingers.
@RowdyRedneckz to put in my two cents...I think english saddles have their uses, it is much easier to race and show jump in an english saddle and much easier to barrel race in a western. I have seen laid back relaxed people trail ride in english and some western pleasure show people all uptight and formal...so it goes back to what is comfortable for you to be in and what do you want to do while in that saddle. If you haven't tried an english, give it a whirl, I think they are more comfortable.
