Generally, in my experience non-profits are best when they are responding directly to a need. Like Habitat for Humanity or Food Not Bombs. I think the more this group focuses on what poor kids need out of a computer, rather than just on what a computer can do, the more useful their laptops will be.
I mean how exactly do they think the students will be using computers? Because that will determine what the applications are. Why do they even need to "collaborate"? In what way? Will all of these applications may overwhelm a kid not even familiar with the internet?
I think its worth asking, why are computers directly beneficial to a kid in a developing country. Will it help with homeowork? Is that the main reason? Get a job? Create a job? I think that answer would shape how their laptops.
I love this video series and just subscribed. However, having worked at a nonprofit I can say that their projects are well intentioned, but sometimes not focused enough. That could be a problem with this organization.
2. get a food in the door with western industry standards
3. better sell than leave the segment out
after destroying the poor regions of the planet as a possible future market, ahving saturated the rich regions and having the one in between produce all the stuff they might consider they will have to sell to SOMEONE tomorrow.
it's non-profit... they're actually trying to help people. Ever consider that there are other motives besides business and money? These things are awesome, per their purpose.
Is your inherent belief that no one will ever be simply benevolent? From everything I have seen about this project, it is very well intentioned. And as they keep pointing out, this is an education project, not a laptop project.

well, the driving force will be:
1. have a bigger market share
2. get a food in the door with western industry standards
3. better sell than leave the segment out
after destroying the poor regions of the planet as a possible future market, ahving saturated the rich regions and having the one in between produce all the stuff they might consider they will have to sell to SOMEONE tomorrow.

it`s called non-profit.
and you are not specific at all.
there are other motives but not for corporations. they are pathological (i.e. shareholder value) by definition.
