I'm a filipino but after reading a blog that makes Balut the number 1 funky exotic food. I then began to ask why the hell it is number 1 when the number 2 is from Korea which is Rice wine with a fermented baby pinkish Rats inside the bottle...???
There was a challenge from a American co worker to bring the strangest food from our country the Philippines. I said, "You really want us to bring our strangest food?" He thought about the Filipino food that he saw like balut, our shrimp paste and he said I back out from my challenge. You Filipinos win even without bringing anything. How about fried moths, fried field rats, snails from the ricefields, stewed or fried frogs, and the smelly fish sauce :)
