@creativeprepper Probably wont find one for that rifle. Marlin is under rated and overlooked by many. Check out Boyds stocks, they do make stocks for the xl7.. as stated below, I love mine! You can always paint or duracoat the stock to your liking and add 1913 rails to the stock very easily.
I hated the choat stock on my model 12 varmint!... overly heavy and UGLY. I sold it and picked up a boyds stock and I bedded the action. My accuracy actually went from a 3 shot 3/4" at 100 yards to a 3 shot 1/2" at 100 yards. Love the savage rifles though... tough to beat!
I recently went and purchased a rifle exactly well not exactly like this one I have a question though mine is the FCP LE but my barrel is shorter than this one.
@sootch00 Yea, I know with practice you'd be shooting better with that gun, I love Savage rifles, my favorite of my guns is my Savage 116FHSAK with the ACCUSTOCK, ACCUTRIGGER, and ADJUSTABLE MUZZLE BRAKE AND IT'S DEADLY ACCURATE. The next purchase for me is going to be a SAVAGE MODEL 10 not sure which makeup it'll be or what caliber yet but it's going to be a 10.
I like that stock by the way, but you think the maker would have made the tool comp, easier to get open (clips instead of screws) NICE
Hey Sootch. I didnt see what ammo you were using, was that winchester white box? Surely with match ammo you would have shot 1 ragged hole, still a very good group for a rifle you just picked up.
Did either of you shoot any farther than 100m that day? I would like to know how that heavy barrel does at 300-500m vs a fluted barrel. Would you buy that savage over the rem 700? I am thinking about getting one, still on the fence as to which make & model.
Thats a beautiful rifle, I was thinking about getting an AR platform in .308 but have change my mine and I am seriously considering this rifle. Thanks for showing brother.
You don't want a light rifle. It worsens the felt recoil, and increases the likelyhood of a miss due to movement, heartbeat, breathing, arm tension during trigger pull, ect. Yeah, it sucks to carry a heavy rifle into the field, but if you're trying to make an accurate shot, you don't want to lighten your rifle. Weight only matters when you're having to haul it around all day, not bench shooting, hunting, sniping, or even counter sniping. Sheesh.
I had an HK SR9TC that I used for hunting, and that thing weighed right at 11 lbs unloaded. Even when I shoulder fired it, the scope drift was almost non-existant because of the weight. For rifles like this, heavy = good.
@sootch00 I don't want to critisize your statement about the 1 1/2lbs trigger but this is really the big idea of the accutrigger. I do not know the specifics but the special tab in the middle of the trigger is supposed to make it safe even with very light triggers. kind of like the glock safeaction. again, i'm no pro on the system, nor am I a pro in sniping, i'm just telling what I read about the accutrigger
Hey sootch, I did a video response to this video yesterday. LOL I actually rushed making the video and finished it in a couple hours. Then I went to post it here and realized that the feature was not activated. Duh, I did not even think about that when I was making it.
I gave you a shout out in the video. If anyone wants to watch the video, you can go to my site. Great review sootch.
I hate it when people get in this "my gun is bigger" contest. Arround Vietnam, I think, they started using "more expensive" hunting rifles as sniper systems. Before that, all they wanted to use was specifically manufactured rifles, I think. Bolt actions are nice, but I would rather have semi-auto just incase I miss or something doesn't go down w/ the first shot.
sootch, I have the Remington tactical 308 and while the stock does touch the barrel a little I havent noticed any real pressure. The barrel is plenty thick and doesnt seem to be affected. Two weekends ago I shot 2 sub 1/2 moa groups with it. the average for 5 three shot groups was around .8 moa.
@speedhed4 Bolt guns are better for long range and precision. Semi-auto are better for rapid engagement. Both have there pro's and con's at the end of the day its down to the user unless your Military of LE and have to use what your told to.
I'm pretty sure that a 1.5lb trigger pull is only dangerous to the unexperienced shooter with that particular rifle. As long as your finger is off the trigger until ready to shoot and the rifle is pointed at what you aim to destroy, then nothing is dangerous.
Nice rig, got my preteen stepson a Savage edge .308. Never could zero the cheap chinese scope that the chain store sold with it. Bought a UTG scope and am really looking forward to some range time to zero it. What do you thing of the .338 Lapua mag tactical rifle made by Savage?
Nice rig, got my preteen stepson a Savage edge .308. Never could zero the cheap chinese scope that the chain store sold with it. Bought a UTG scope and am really looking forward to some range time to zero it.
I have the same rifle in 308 with the stainless steel heavy fluted barrel. It is a great rifle and I have had it for years. My swat buddies took it to the range one day and love it to. You can see mine in my video, SHTF Gun Collection. Great Video They also make this rifle in 223, I saw one at a gun show once.
You may want to use your nonshooting hand to support the rear of the stock - i see you have an extendable rear monopod rest - while i think they are good in theory i prefer either weak hand support or rear bag. Either way - try moving your weak hand toward the butt of the stock and really sinching that stock into your shoulder..
I wish I knew you were reviewing this gun. I own a Savage 10 FCP LE in .308 Win. I have an HS Precision stock on it. Its a great gun - especially for the money. Accurate out of the box!
The best group i shot with this gun is 5/8 inch at 200 yards. I can get 1/4 inch at 100 yards on my best days. If I had time I would have posted a video response to this. Excellent review sootch.
Hey man I am with you on the remington at first i was a little scared of that stock but bought it anyway and dont have one single complaint the stock does touch the barrell when resting on a bipod but I have not noticed any difference what so ever. The gun will still drive tacks at 200yds and I hope to try her out to 400 this weekend. So sootch if your like me and a remington man its the only way to go.
A "tactical" rifle with a 1.5lb trigger... hahahaha... right. Not sure why so many guys shoot so light a trigger. Learn to shoot a good 3lb trigger with crisp break. If triggers went down to 1/16th of a pound... I bet guys would have them. Crazy!
Savage arm really stepped up their game over the last couple of years. It don't matter which model you get markII 22 cal to the model 111. the bank won't be broken. Wish Browning and Remington could say that
Sootch has really hit his stride this year. Every video for the last couple of months has dealt with something really interesting that you just can't see anywhere else. From the Garand to a S&W Gen III to a Ruger Blackhawk and now a Savage. Excellent stuff.
I wouldn't overlook a browning X-bolt. I am looking into getting a bolt gun and I've narrowed it down to either the savage or the browning. The Rugers and Remingtons are great guns too but the little subtleties have me leaning for Browning or Savage. Of course there's lots of other good guns out there too.
I was wanting a Rem700 till this video...don't care for the stock though. Also, i looked up that trigger its not as unsafe as it sounds. Check it out on the savage website. Its called accutrigger and can be found under the accuracy tab

what "field" are you speaking of? this is a tactical rifle, no? no one would use this to hunt.. this is going to be used by military or law enforcement in an extreme situation. 1 1/2 lb pull is more than safe enough.
@marinegrunt777 Snipers are not benchrest shooters. - They work in the field, - the real world, where trigger pulls of several ounces could be a liability. Jack Coughlin, retired Marine Sniper with over 60 kills, had his trigger pull at 3lbs.
@sootch00 Sootch. I've missed out on so much of your knowledge. Please keep the information flowing. Highly appreciate it. Btw im just a biotech major with no military exp (air force kid) and a big fan.
Sootch I have no issues carrying my loaded Model 10 predator hunter around loaded on safe in the woods
The Triger works as other's have said the same way a glock trigger Next time rour shooting a savage OR if your at a show where there is a rep Depress the trigger but not the accu-release. The gun will not go off it's designed to only go off when the Accu-release is fully depressed.
And i would sure as hell Hunt with a Model10 police savage i almost bought one over mine
@marinegrunt777 I've used a "tactical" rifle to take 80 % of the whitetails I've shot. I would use nothing but a tactical rifle for hunting if the shot had a possibility of being over 200 yards.
@marinegrunt777 These types of rifles actually make GREAT HUNTERS, a Rem 700 Tactical w/20" bbl, will do pretty much anything that a 24" will do, especially in .308 where 16" -18" bbls with certain loads will have burnt all the powder in the shorter, BUT STIFFER barrel. So sometimes the more maneuverable and shorter rifle really can 'do-it-all'!(most, limitations of course, like any other rifle!)
@marinegrunt777 ok first Military and LE snipers can not set the triger pull below 2 lb(incase of accidental discharge). Second Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is an extreme situation(LE i understand but in the Military sniping is a day to day thing noting extreme about that)? Third i know of a few hunters that use "Tactical" rifles like this for hunting deer,Pigs,Roos and rabbits(in.233 or likewise roundsfor rabbits) and last you got a big mouth for a guy who has no videos and runs down other youtubers.
@marinegrunt777 wow cant even put it as a comment i just this is the message i just got from the marine sayin "when you grow up and stop playing with your balls, come talk to me. until then I have better things to do..like being a troop in the best fighting force on the planet". Why would I want to talk to you? funking jarhead tool. if your part of the marines good for you but why are you typing about it here? last time i looked the marienes used M40s which are Rem 700s not Savage 10s
@marinegrunt777 Why wouldn't you use it to hunt? 308 Winchester is a good hunting cartridge, suitable for deer, elk, black bear, antelope, and hogs. Just because it's black, doesn't mean you can't shoot deer with it.
Um wow i guess i don't exist i almost bought one in .223 for coyote hunting.
if I had a hunting area with a farther then 50 yard shot where i could set up and wait for the deer I'd have no issues using a model 10 heavy barrel in 308.
@marinegrunt777 I would use it to hunt. All of the rifles/handguns i will ever own will have a purpose in hunting. savage model 10's are great hunting rifles. The stock doesnt make the rifle. I hunted with my buddies bench rest rifle, thumb hole stock, the sucker weighed 11 pounds. I doubt military would use this over the m40 or any of the other rifles they currently have.
Great video. Real quality rifle. Thanks sootch! From what I hear from you and nutnfancy, when I eventually go to buy a bolt gun, a Savage (like the Model 10) is going to be at the top of my list. They are so high value and accurate that they are very attractive.
Chris looks sleepy in some of those shots.... Well how can we solve that for next time?... Ohhhh! Take him to run the SLEDGEHAMMER! That'll wake him up for sure.
Nice... 308 is a proven round... There is a great 'Savage Booth Review' from the Shot Show 2011 by NutnFancy, they(Savage) guarantee the quality and accuracy on thier rifles..... Cheers.
Your right about over mold Hogue stocks. Very few HB Remingtons come in a Hogue stock, Check out some nice rear sandbags from protektormodel com, A rear bag can make a big difference, Nice vid!
I think savage is the best rifle for the money, they addressed the most common problems that affect precision on factory rifles with intelligent design features: barrel nut for correct headspace, floating bolt head for total locking lugs engagement, accutrigger for a light pull without legal or liability issues, the accustock for a firmly bedded action (this rifle do not uses the accustock, but the Choate is what Russell Simmonds used to win the 2009 F-TR World Championship, so not bad at all)
Hey sootch I was wondering if u had any sort of holster system for the walther p22 because I just got one for camping and hiking and don't have a good way to carry it, great videos by the way
If you want to get something like a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 10x40 you are going to pay over $1K, which is equal to or more than the rifle (unless you go with a super tricked out version)
The thing is the dont complain about barrel being heavy because thats where a good deal of the accuracy comes from in this system aswell as Savages barrel lug design. When you get into tactical bolt guns your looking for acuracy and weight is just something you need to deal with.
Nice Rifle, I don't own one but I've heard nothing but good thing about them, all very accurate. I have heard complaints about the so called ugly barrel nut but I think that is purely a eye of the beholder thing.
@Redpitbull44 its a thing i was tought. its like buy cheap buy twice. i mean you dont buy a $1500 rifle and put a $200 Redfield buy leupold. buy the best scope you can. hows that make sence now?
@TheAustralianBloke Yeah, I get what you mean now. I fully believe buy cheap buy twice. The optics companies that I will deal with are few and far between. Millett, Leupold, Nightforce, Schmidt and Bender, with a few others smattered in there, but thats my top choices in order of cost, and they are all AWESOME choices, especially Nightforce.
@IMakeOrWatchVideos it ensures that if you have a quality rifle, you have a quality scope, a cheap rifle, a cheap scope. its just a thing, its not like people are trying to buy scopes exactly half the price of their rifle.
@ketel1 look where i live here in aus a good bolt gun like a remington 700 police is around $2100(or more) tell me what should i do by a tasco scope Target & Varmint or buy a Leupold mk4 or vx7? i know which i would get how bout you?
@creativeprepper Probably wont find one for that rifle. Marlin is under rated and overlooked by many. Check out Boyds stocks, they do make stocks for the xl7.. as stated below, I love mine! You can always paint or duracoat the stock to your liking and add 1913 rails to the stock very easily.

Do you need a CCW to own one or is it the same as a shotgun home defence etc.
Do you need a licence to own one to hunt with and to shoot at ranges?

Third i know of a few hunters that use "Tactical" rifles like this for hunting deer,Pigs,Roos and rabbits(in.233 or likewise roundsfor rabbits) and last you got a big mouth for a guy who has no videos and runs down other youtubers.
TheAustralianBloke 1 year ago
@marinegrunt777 wow cant even put it as a comment i just this is the message i just got from the marine sayin "when you grow up and stop playing with your balls, come talk to me. until then I have better things to do..like being a troop in the best fighting force on the planet". Why would I want to talk to you? funking jarhead tool. if your part of the marines good for you but why are you typing about it here? last time i looked the marienes used M40s which are Rem 700s not Savage 10s
TheAustralianBloke 1 year ago
@marinegrunt777 Why wouldn't you use it to hunt? 308 Winchester is a good hunting cartridge, suitable for deer, elk, black bear, antelope, and hogs. Just because it's black, doesn't mean you can't shoot deer with it.
contrarianbastard 1 year ago
@marinegrunt777
Um wow i guess i don't exist i almost bought one in .223 for coyote hunting.
if I had a hunting area with a farther then 50 yard shot where i could set up and wait for the deer I'd have no issues using a model 10 heavy barrel in 308.

@marinegrunt777 i think it would be a great hunting rifle nice thick barrel so if you whack something to will not bend

Cheers.

i've got an accu-trigger on my savage mark II .22 LR and I love it, best factory trigger in existence.
xdkwallen742 1 year ago
what bipod did you used?
putademuerde2 1 year ago
I think savage is the best rifle for the money, they addressed the most common problems that affect precision on factory rifles with intelligent design features: barrel nut for correct headspace, floating bolt head for total locking lugs engagement, accutrigger for a light pull without legal or liability issues, the accustock for a firmly bedded action (this rifle do not uses the accustock, but the Choate is what Russell Simmonds used to win the 2009 F-TR World Championship, so not bad at all)
sacamelo 1 year ago
I have the Savage Arms 10 FCP-K with Accustock and Accutrigger short action.
For a scope I went with a Horus Vision Hawk 3-12x50 with a H-425 Reticle :)

Hey sootch I was wondering if u had any sort of holster system for the walther p22 because I just got one for camping and hiking and don't have a good way to carry it, great videos by the way
TheExtremeJess 1 year ago
If you want to get something like a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 10x40 you are going to pay over $1K, which is equal to or more than the rifle (unless you go with a super tricked out version)

The thing is the dont complain about barrel being heavy because thats where a good deal of the accuracy comes from in this system aswell as Savages barrel lug design. When you get into tactical bolt guns your looking for acuracy and weight is just something you need to deal with.
BENLINUZ 1 year ago
This was my 308 bolt action choice for my next purchase until I saw the new Ruger scout 308. This is still a great rifle though.

Nice Rifle, I don't own one but I've heard nothing but good thing about them, all very accurate. I have heard complaints about the so called ugly barrel nut but I think that is purely a eye of the beholder thing.
dphitch 1 year ago
Is it me or am I seeing this rifle rotate clockwise when you fire ? I think it is, could be from the rifling of the barrel. Sweet rifle :)
WulfBand 1 year ago
I was tought the you sould buy a scope half the price of the rifle.
TheAustralianBloke 1 year ago
@TheAustralianBloke At least. He took the good scope off and put it on different rifle. I was just giving him a hard time. Thanks~
sootch00 1 year ago
@TheAustralianBloke That doesn't really make much sense, because the best scopes out there cost $800-$4000
Redpitbull44 1 year ago
@Redpitbull44 its a thing i was tought. its like buy cheap buy twice. i mean you dont buy a $1500 rifle and put a $200 Redfield buy leupold. buy the best scope you can. hows that make sence now?
TheAustralianBloke 1 year ago
@TheAustralianBloke Yeah, I get what you mean now. I fully believe buy cheap buy twice. The optics companies that I will deal with are few and far between. Millett, Leupold, Nightforce, Schmidt and Bender, with a few others smattered in there, but thats my top choices in order of cost, and they are all AWESOME choices, especially Nightforce.
Redpitbull44 1 year ago
@TheAustralianBloke why?
IMakeOrWatchVideos 1 year ago
@IMakeOrWatchVideos it ensures that if you have a quality rifle, you have a quality scope, a cheap rifle, a cheap scope. its just a thing, its not like people are trying to buy scopes exactly half the price of their rifle.
SNIPERSTEVE420 1 year ago
@IMakeOrWatchVideos because if you buy a good rifle you dont buy a barska scope how that make sence now?
TheAustralianBloke 1 year ago
@TheAustralianBloke Some may say the scope should cost one to two times more...
