This was before custom particles. I think there's a little entity you can use called point_tesla or something which makes this effect.

Dude, I had the same problem. Open the file video you created in Windows Movie Maker, and save it as project (video project) somewhere. The size for 1.5gb video will be like 10-20mb with great quality! But don't forget to choose best resolution in Windows Movie Maker while converting.

Anyway I think the author or this map has given up on it (at this point in time!) due to issues with map crashes as soon as RED leaves spawn.
