Watch the documentary called "how Hitler lost the war"...he could have crushed the retreating British army in France but didn't. Hitler ordered his armies to stop and let over 100 thousand of Britain's strong men escape. Hitler was Germany's greatest enemy and reason Britain won the battle they waged. Watch that Documentary!!!

@alanmeires oh i'm happy Hitler was an idiot. I am just saying that had the war remained in the hands of Germany's generals they would have crushed England. Thank God Hitler decided to make all the military decisions and lose. I love the British people they have a fascinating history. I am currently watching The Tudors..an amazing series about king henry.

Which only tells us that it was indeed a vast navy, the biggest indeed in the world. Be it the pacific, Channel, North sea, Mediterranean, etc. Be it in capital ships, submarines, aircraft carriers, cruisers.. and all assortment of vessels. @alanmeires but i have to ask a simple question, what do u think would have happened had the 1921 washington naval conference never occured? some say the there could have been a Anglo-American naval confrontation.. as the British were building more and more ships to counteract, Italy, Japan, and .. the US. ..we take it for granted now, US and British relations that is. It is a shame, that they decommissioned the Ark royal..

@teddythebenny im not to up to date on the nine power Treaty but the japs would never have beable to of armed up like thay did i would have to read up on it realy and get back to you on that . buy WW2 the british had decommissioned half there fleet may be it was because of the Washington Naval Treaty i dont know ill read up on it ...but yes the Ark royal we only have 2 air craft carriers now .England is a saddow of its self now days

@alanmeires The "half [their] [UK] fleet" that was decommissioned were obsolescent vessels that were expensive to run and no longer suitable to fulfill a role which was now beyond the capabilities for which they had been built. The Washington Naval Treaty limited tonnage not only of a fleet overall, but also of capital ships. With her global trade route protection commitments, the consequently larger number of fast modern cruisers and destroyers built and deployed suited UK very well

@elrjames777 yes you are right i dont think it was are navy or air force so much why we was weak in WW2 we lacked money for the ground troops like tanks and wepones like that ..the 1931 alliance know matter what we would have still gone to war agianst japan even if we didnt renew the pact...they sided with germany

@alanmeires ya.. i know. we japs, eh.. still have not gotten over our tendency for sea power.. i mean, the stupid govt intends to buy F-35 lightnings, and some say, particularly in govt circles that they can be fitted on the hyuga helicopter destroyer/carriers. But in terms of British Naval disarmament in the 1920s~30s, that probably was because of financial burdens, no doubt.. anyway, gotta love the harriers XD..

@teddythebenny The Washington Conference was not just about naval matters, but the naval settlement was to Japan's advantage because if no agreement had been reached the Americans were ready to build up their navy to a strength that neither Britain nor Japan could match. The 5:5:3 status quo meant no first class naval base in the Philippines or Hong Kong, and Japan obtained a measure of security that she could not have achieved in an unrestricted naval building race with the USA.

@teddythebenny In 1931 UK and Japan had a formal alliance. A principal aim of American policy was to end it and this was done by the Washington Conference. It removed any possibility of friendly and efficient influence by the UK on policy making in Tokyo. Japan recognized her friendship with UK as a permanent basis of her policy, so UK's decision not to renew the pact, although swathed in face saving references, inflicted a wound that was received in sorrow and remembered in wrath
