For someone on a budget (I'm willing to spend a big if it's worth it) is this head worth the money? For video I mostly use a T2i with a 50mm f/1.8. I'm slowing trying to build up my equipment to produce better videos. I have a decent tripod with a fairly smooth head, but unfortunately the QR plate is missing, so I've have to jury rig it to get my camera on it. It's fallen off a couple times, luckily onto carpet. I think the legs are fair enough, so I'm just considering buying a head for it..
I have tried the IS on and off and got very interesting results. I don't have videos for now but I found out that IS is good for still photos which means there is something to focus on. With video, IS on is good for something to focus on too. But when the camera moves, panning and so on, the IS on is the worst nightmare. So when moving, I prefer IS off. If smoothness is required then I will use the Glidecame HD2000 or Manfrotto 701HDV.
@silmusashi If you have a 70-200 2.8 or another L telephoto lens like a 300 2.8, you can set the IS to mode 2 where it only corrects vertical movement. So that horizontal pans will be as smooth as can be.
@fwijffels: very useful information you have there. I haven't bought the 70-200 IS yet but soon I will get my hands on it and will try it out. Thanks.
@iXaier There are two standard thread sizes for tripod heads, 1/4"-20 3/8"-16. Usually smaller/cheaper tripods use 1/4" threads and larger tripods use 3/8". You need 3/8"-16 threads to put this head on. If you have a 1/4" tripod, they make little adapters that thread on over the stud to make it 3/8". But the head has to be screwed on tight so when you're panning counterclockwise it doesn't come loose, and when you crank on the adapter that tight it might get stuck. I have that problem now.
@dgetchel The 70-200 does have IS. That's a good question. I looked at the original video and unfortunately I can't see the side of the lens with the switch on it. IS was probably turned on, but I don't know how much it affects the smoothness of the pan.
@cameratest I've read that IS should be turned off while on a tripod. It would be interesting to do a test with it on and off to see if there is any noticeable difference either way.
@cameratest I think it was. there are some small jitters that to me looked like the IS trying to compensate for the movement. Perhaps counter-intuitively the IS will decrease video pan/tilt smoothness. I appreciate the review.
Thanks for the video. I'm looking into Manfrotto tripods and heads and your vid introduced me to the 701HDV. Even though most people would say the video is boring, us geeks like it. Thanks for sharing
Did you at any point shoot 60Fps?

Thanks for the review, very helpful. Looks pretty good for a small, lightweight tripod.

Great test! Thanks for sharing. With the 70-200 does it have IS and if so, was it turned on?

@dgetchel I would guess(!) the very little stuttering in the video could be caused by the IS, but don't hang me up on it!
OrgasmatronYYZ 1 year ago
@dgetchel Doesn't make too much difference, it just makes a little noise.

@cameratest: Push the volume up, you definitely hear the IS running.
Great shots btw, really shows the capabilities of this video head.

@CBOYDRUN No, it's just dslr footage when panning. It's almost always there, due to a writing issue. Even on a fast card, you see it.

@dgetchel IS was turned on.Turn up your volume and you'll hear crumbling sound of Image Stabilizer.IS on 70-200 f4 is even louder

Haha .. everybody is praising the camera.
The videohead is the star of this video people !
I ordered mine just today and my retailer said, the demand was so high, I need to wait until middle of next month.
My tripod is going to be the Benro A-457m8.
Thanks for the video btw :o)

So this camera does not jitter while panning at all? I guess it depends on the speed you move it?

that's a really good camera!
