I find this terminology to be confusing, deceptive, and weird.
When you invest that money, you are investing it into the stock market. The stock market is private business. If we hit a recession, it's going to depreciate your savings. Even if you have an expanded portfolio, a recession that is either big enough or long enough can still affect you, and that's not a risk the government should make you take. As for making it an "option," what will the alternative be?

People who would deny their own citizenry essential government services like college grants and healthcare are just hurting their own country. Bush is cutting effective items like Pell grants and Chips, while spending on things like Iraq, "Homeland" bureaucracy and the medicare fraud bill of 2006. However, for the government to literally steal money from us to give to other people is socialism and is not constitutional.
So I dont mind Social Security, but it should be a voluntary thing. Not automatically taken out of our paychecks. Lets follow the constitution!

In this video, you said that Bush tried to privatize Social Security. Everywhere I've checked indicates that this is not true. Could you or someone else please point me in the direction of some reliable information on this matter?

Bush proposes allowing younger workers an option - take a portion of your Social Security contributions and invest it - and this is referred to by Franken (and like minded individuals) as "privatizing Social Security".
I find this terminology to be confusing, deceptive, and weird.

When you invest that money, you are investing it into the stock market. The stock market is private business. If we hit a recession, it's going to depreciate your savings. Even if you have an expanded portfolio, a recession that is either big enough or long enough can still affect you, and that's not a risk the government should make you take. As for making it an "option," what will the alternative be?

Even as a comedian on SNL, Al's main topic used to be politics. He comes across as a man of integrity and social conscience. I sincerely hope he gets elected, and goes on to bigger and better things.

Absolutely agree with this philosophy. Its just common sense. People who would deny their own citizenry essential government services like college grants and healthcare are just hurting their own country. Bush is cutting effective items like Pell grants and Chips, while spending on things like Iraq, "Homeland" bureaucracy and the medicare fraud bill of 2006. The result : less useful services, more poverty and at the same time hundreds of billions in debt.

I'm old enough to remember Hubert Humphrey and Franken is his reincarnation. As a native Ranger and now Georgia resident with two sad sacks in the senate I was delighted to make a small contribution to his campaign. If you live in MN get out there and volunteer to send this man to the senate for the benefit of us all.

I am proud to say I am from MN (Brainerd..yes, from the movie Fargo) and I will be voting for Franken. MN is a very progressive state...#1 in public education, great economy...lots of amazing looking blonds of Swedish and German lineage...Anyway, I appreciate how he defines his character, never slings mud as Sen. Colman (who has done nothing for "his" State or his Country except point his finger at the UN...yes, we in MN do pay attention to what our Senators have been up to)

I think it would be a great statement if Franken campaighned by traveling around Minnesota in Paul Wellstones green and white bus. People remember the bus, and it will remind them of the great man that it was associated with, a couragous hardworking man that fought for the people.

Hi powederwrecker, No hate-filled comments, but I do suggest that you read The Communist Manifesto, if you are going to compare people to communists. I do not think that a reasonable number of strong social programs should be compared to the complete abolishon of private capital ownership. I would also note, that while Marx was way off on communism, he was not so wrong about laissez-faire capitalism.

By "bootstraps" we mean "hard work" and by "boots" we mean "jobs". If you're a housewife and you're husband dies it's not so certain that you can get an employment right away let alone start your own business.
And I promise you, the US is probably the least communist land on the planet. With an effective two party system your right and your left will never stray too far away from the other.

What exactly is the government there for, then? Are they supposed to use the mass resources that they have to just watch poor people eek their way through life? The quick definition of democracy is that the people look after themselves...not the goverment,that's socialism. You all must be very young and uninformed-try working. I have never been without work, and have had a good life.
This was a good question-a non democracy might be best for some of you.

There are some similarities to socialism, communism, fascism, etc. That is definitely not a definition of "Democracy", especially the way it is in the US.
