Somehow i find myself here once again, six months later... Why? I really don't know, just looking for some Fifth gear clips and i stumble upon this, and the hat is still there?! Take it off!
@truckdrivah Those Subarus are great cars, but I think if you turned up at a trial in one you'd get laughed at.. It would be rather against the spirit of the event! (and no better at it than the VW really)
Hang on a sec man... I've done downhill, driven through Australia for a thousand Kilometres in isolation, climbed mountains and all that, spent days wondering around Dartmoor in the army etc... But there ain't no bumps on roads man... just a bit of mud and rocks...inhospitable place?? It's Dartmoor lol. Why don't you drive a Mini through Peru or a VW in the Sahara or something? And off road also!! C'mon get real. That was lame for TV. I'm pissing myself laughing right now. GPS? hahaha
i really hope he is just having a joke!! Devon is not tough to drive in, or difficult to get lost in or any of what he said... and I agree, 22 hours? Don't think so. I can cycle from Exeter to Bude faster than that
I'm requesting someone to use the film 'Haute Tension' AKA 'Switchblade Romance' and place it with David Draiman's Forsaken to make a little nasty music video. Please copy and paste this.
Not difficult in a car. It's a lot colder on a motor cycle. I rode the event a lot in the 60s/70s when it started in Kenilworth. It's one of the oldest sporting motor events in the world and first run in around 1907 (IIRC). I even once had my then girlfriend's father as a passenger in my open sidecar.
why dont you give this car away? i'd buy it (at the price of a phone call). but did i hear the phrase never raced or rallied. now thats fifthgear viewing - keep it real ;-)
FAO Climbing Chris: From organising club's website: Most of our Observed Sections are on public highways legally open to motorised vehicles (BOATs or Unclassified County Roads), or on private land. A small number are on Restricted Byways or Bridleways which we are allowed to use under the provisions of Section 33 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, but only with the permission of the landowner and the Local Authority.
MSA/ACU requirements for public relations are even more stringent for unsurfaced lanes/tracks than they are for the normal public road network. Extensive local consultation always occurs before any unsurfaced public highway is used on an event. All classic trials clubs ban practising on Observed Sections between events. These requirements, rigidly enforced by both the clubs and the MSA/ACU, ensure that classic trials are welcomed in many rural communites.

You are quite right climbingchris, it is illegal to drive on a Bridleway normally. Have you sent a message to 5th gear pointing this out to them so they can make sure that they get it right on Monday? The organisers of the Exeter Trial, The Motorcycling Club is a very responsible organisation and has been organising these events for 100 years or so, they know the law and make sure that it is stuck to.
The sections used on the Exeter Trial include unsurfaced roads, privately-owned tracks and rights of way. All permissions for use of rights of way are obtained by the organisers. Competitors are banned from practising on sections outside the actual event - even where they have a legal right of way to use the track. Some sections on the Trial have been in continuous use since the 1930s and this has only been possible because the organisers have the support of the local communities.
Funtlewerp - the organising club welcomes new members and has plenty of information on how to get started on its website. Google MCC and you'll find it. Not the cricket club, obviously ;-)
Get your facts right before you start name calling.
The only unsurfaced tracks in England with PUBLIC vehicular rights are Byways (BOATs) Other routes with public access (ORPAs) though not all of them have vehicular rights and UCRs (unclassified roads).
As GPBuggydriver says they drive some of the route on private land with the owners permission.
My point is that it's misleading of 5th gear to say they're driving on bridleways as that IS illegal, unless you're the landowner accessing your property.
