Not difficult in a car. It's a lot colder on a motor cycle. I rode the event a lot in the 60s/70s when it started in Kenilworth. It's one of the oldest sporting motor events in the world and first run in around 1907 (IIRC). I even once had my then girlfriend's father as a passenger in my open sidecar.

A small number are on Restricted Byways or Bridleways which we are allowed to use under the provisions of Section 33 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, but only with the permission of the landowner and the Local Authority.

Extensive local consultation always occurs before any unsurfaced public highway is used on an event. All classic trials clubs ban practising on Observed Sections between events. You are quite right climbingchris, it is illegal to drive on a Bridleway normally. Have you sent a message to 5th gear pointing this out to them so they can make sure that they get it right on Monday? The organisers of the Exeter Trial, The Motorcycling Club is a very responsible organisation and has been organising these events for 100 years or so, they know the law and make sure that it is stuck to.

The sections used on the Exeter Trial include unsurfaced roads, privately-owned tracks and rights of way. All permissions for use of rights of way are obtained by the organisers. Competitors are banned from practising on sections outside the actual event - even where they have a legal right of way to use the track. Some sections on the Trial have been in continuous use since the 1930s and this has only been possible because the organisers have the support of the local communities.

The only unsurfaced tracks in England with PUBLIC vehicular rights are Byways (BOATs) Other routes with public access (ORPAs) though not all of them have vehicular rights and UCRs (unclassified roads).

My point is that it's misleading of 5th gear to say they're driving on bridleways as that IS illegal, unless you're the landowner accessing your property.
