It's just ironic. The ghillie suit was invented in Scotland (and I think 'sniping' was as well, not sure), Cpt. MacMillian is Scottish and the name 'MacMillian' refers to the MacMillian TAC50, which is the rifle used to take the two longest confirmed shots in history (something like over 2.5km) and McMillian is also the scope used on the British L96A1 sniper rifles. You couldn't ask for a more perfect long-shot sniper character, and he decides to melee him in the face. I just found it hilarious.

The word sniping comes from a bird in India. Sniping wasn't invented in scotland. Snipes are very alert , so if to shoot one with a bow and arrow is very difficult , and you'd have to shoot them at long range to even kill them. If you managed to shoot and kill one , they'd call you a sniper.

Umm...in the American war of indipendence, American Skirmishers(colonists) used to target High Ranking British Officers

Later in the American Civil War, German immigrants(called Jagers - Hunters) adopted a rifled barrel kinda musket, called a rifle. They added a Breach-Loading system.

It developed to incorporate a scope during the First World War, and new tactics evolved in WW2 and the last 5 decades
