@amanda20085onfantage You mean your dog is too active, running around and can't stand still? If that is the case, you may want to take your dog for a jog until your dog is tired before you try it again.
@LocoChan1432 You're welcome! Glad that your dog has successsfully learnt to scratch your back. Sometimes, it is really tough and takes a lot of patience to teach a dog a trick. I taught my dog to cross her paw and she finally knows how to do it after teaching her for a year! The fastest way to training a dog a trick is to have fun and make a big fuss over the dog for every step closer to the goal. :)
@weiwei1105 Try waiting a little longer and hold the container so it doesn't move. Place high value treats under the container and try it before dinnertime. You can ask your dog to sit and wait while your dog sees you placing a tasty treat in a small gap where your dog couldn't reach the treat with his nose and will have to use his paw in oder to get the treat out. Then, ask your dog "Are you ready?" in an excited voice and release him to get the treat by saying "ok" in an excited voice too.
@weiwei1105 Wait for him as he tries to figure out how to get the treat. When he got the treat successfully, praise him enthusiastically. Try playing this game at different places before placing a treat under the container and let him figure out how to get it using the same method. As he is used to using his paws to get the treats, he will most likely scratch the container. Thanks for trying out this trick with your dog. I will look forward to your updates on how your dog is progressing. :)
@artofserenity Thanks for your lovely comments. I really appreciate them! I am sure your dog will be really cute scratching your back. Please post a video response so that I can share your joy too! Enjoy and have fun teaching this trick to your dog! :)
i can get my shitzu to scratch my back without paper on command. but if i tell him to scratch my back too long, he scratch it so hard that it hurts :(
@AimBotBoy Yup, my dog scratches my back real hard too when I ask her to scratch for a long time. The dogs may be thinking, "The harder they scratch, the faster they will get to eat the treats." :) They have a really interesting minds that we, humans find it hard to comprehend at times. :)
@campbellhousehold Thanks for your lovely comments! So sorry for the late reply as I am really busy with my homework nowdays. Haha, I can imagine that. You can wear thick winter clothing before trying to show this trick off to your friends. :)
@wwwmarcialescommx Haha that is what happen when I trained my hamsters last time too. Xiao xiao will come running to me, expecting a treat when she hears the clicker. :)
@Caninefan999 You can fade the click and treat by replacing them with some other reinforcements that your dog loves, like asking your dog to scratch your back before you play a game of fetch or tug with your dog. You can also ask your dog to scratch your back before letting your dog to jump up on your bed or crouch to sleep. :)
My dog scratches himself constantly. I'm currently working on a method of harnessing the energy by connecting straps that are tied to a small series of pulleys that run an alternator. My only concern is that if the dog farts the spark of the alternator will set off a huge explosion. In your expert opinion, how often do most dogs fart?
@mrbr549 Hi, I research this question on Google and the answer is dogs fart as often as a human would. I don't know if this answer is accurate but it is the only answer I found. Hope it helps you. :)
@airsoftbuddies50 Hi, this is not reinforcing scratching as a good behaviour as you will only praise your dog and give your dog treats when you ask him to do this trick. When he scratches you without you asking him to do so, you will not give him any treats or praise to reinforce that behaviour at times when you do not want him to do so.
@airsoftbuddies50 Instead you can ignore the times when your dog is scratching you when you did not ask him to do so(example: when he is scratching you for attention), and wait for him to do a desired behaviour, like sitting beside you when he wants your attention and reward him for that. Your dog will then quickly learn that he will only get rewards when you ask him to do so. At other times, scratching for attention does not earn him rewards and it also remove your attention for him.
@airsoftbuddies50 This is like how other people teach their dogs to bark on cue and their dogs did it but they will not bark at any other times when they are not instructed to do so.
@charmander12122 No worries. You may have this problem when your dog is not so hungry or when you use a treat that is of low value. Try training before your dog has his dinner or use a higher value treat (which means a treat that your dog loves a lot or his favourite treat). Treats like pieces of cheese, sausages and chicken works amazingly well as high value treats. :)
i love it ty soooo much its cute but i dont know how to do it. ive tried many containers she loves the treats but she is scared of the containers and she wont do anything but run plz make a vidoe to make her not affriad of everything
@RitvarLegend Yes a cat can do the same thing but you need to be careful of the claws. Cats have sharp claws that may hurt you, so remember to trim your cat's claws before teaching this trick.
Hiya, tried this tonight with my border collie, i put treat under Tupperware, held it down, waited for scratch, he did well, I skipped paper as he got confused, i held Tupperware on back & he continued fine, i then put him in sit/stay & tapped my back with the cue & Wahoo, he scratches my back, i look forward to practising this lol, now i need to trim his nails lol, great method, thanks a lot
@djsika Thanks a lot for sharing your wonderful training process with your dog. I love to hear that. Your border collie is a fast-learner. He learn this in a night! That's amazing! I love border collies. They are so smart, active and easy to train. :)
Great tutorial. I just tried it out with my two Boston terriers and they are not getting it quite so quickly. When I put a treat under a plastic tupperware they just want to nose the tupperware over to get to the treat. If I keep the tupperware from moving they decide to lie down and hope that patient obedience will get them the treat. hehe It's so nice to have polite dogs but I want them to learn fun stuff too! Any suggestion on how I can get them to paw the container?
@sambatrader Thanks for your comment. You can use something that is flat and wide like a Tupperware cover or a piece of paper (I used a Frisbee in this video) as it is easier for your dog to scratch it compared to the Tupperware with a certain height. Placing a high-valued treat (which means a treat that your dog loves but seldom get to eat it) with a strong smell like a few small pieces of meat under the paper or Tupperware cover will help to lure your dog to scratch it to get the treat.
@sambatrader You can also give your dog a treat whenever he noses the object. After a few times, do not give your dog a treat when he/she noses the object. Wait and see what happens. Your dog may be confused at first but he/she will slowly think of different ways to get the treat. Give him/her a jackpot when he/she scratch the object. If you are using a clicker to train your dog, you can try this method and click before you give your dog a treat.
@valleysk8r333 It depends. Different dogs learn at different speeds. It also depends how much training sessions you did with your dog in a day. I spent about 3-5 days teaching my dog this trick. I taught her in a 5-10 minutes session per day. Good luck in training your dog! :)
Great video. I tried to teach my dog to wipe its paws before entering the house, using more or less the same pricinple as you do. Pretty succesfull except for the hindlegs. HIndlegs are hardwired in a different way I guess.
@finnbjerke Thanks for the lovely comment! It is much more difficult with the hindlegs, unless your dog will kick his hindlegs after he has done his business and you managed to capture that behavior and put it on cue.
@Digivee You can teach your springer malamute mix to do this trick with you sitting on a low chair. In this way, your dog will find it easier to scratch your back. Wish you success and have an enjoyable time teaching your dog this trick! :)
@newbear95 We got half of it done only downside is the container flies across the room, haha. It seems quite easy to tech and will have to get a video of him doing it once we manage it.
@Digivee Haha, so funny! Your dog is so clever! You two got half of the trick done in a day! That's amazing! Post a video response once your dog managed to do the trick! I will be looking forward to the video! Thanks a lot!
@newbear95 He's very smart }when he wants to be{ seeing as both malamutes and springers are intelligent dogs he makes ab great trick dog, when he's not goofing about. Gonna go play with him some more, promise to get a video posted when we get it done :D
@Digivee Thanks! :) Yea, malamutes and springers are smart dogs. In fact, all dogs are smart, just like we, humans. It just depends on whether we realize their strengths and talents. I love to observe different dogs to find out their character, strengths and talents as I think that every individual dog is different in his/her own special way.
@newbear95 Haha, yes that is quite true. Funny my mal i've had almost 2 years to this day still will not give me her paw or do any tricks, although she will howl if I howl funny girlie. I decided against scratching my back after he did it once and I think I almost died in pain lol I am just gonna upload video now of him scratching my leg instead :)
@Digivee Haha, Xiao xiao will howl if she hear my mum playing the harmonica or my sis playing the recorder in a high pitch tone. As Rusty is an Alaskan malamute mix, he is quite strong, therefore hurting you when he scratch your back.
@newbear95 Haha, yes Maya does that too sometimes it's quite funny. Oh yeah, well my springer who was his dad had large paws so combine malamute sized paws and large springer paws = large paws hehe. It's quite nice if you get 'em to hit the spot, I'm trying to now tech him to scratch my other dog..still a work in progress haha.
@Digivee Last time, my father's friend owned a cute little smart shih tzu. As my father's friend own a factory, they kept a few dogs as watchdogs. In the pack of dogs, there is one oldest dog. Guess what we saw when we go to the factory? We saw the shih tzu helping the old dog to scratch his body. Its a very cute scene. The old dog doesn't mind at all and in fact seem to enjoy it even though he does not like human to touch him.
Oh wow! Super useful too, there's this one spot I can't quite reach by myself-- I could teach Eppy to do it for me! Great idea, nice tutorial too! Thanks!
@DeltaDalmatian Thanks for the lovely comment! Yea, I am sure that Delta will learn this trick in a very short time as she is so clever. As long as you are willing to teach her, I am sure that you will have Delta scratching your back in no time! Delta is so big, you will have to stand up when you teach her this trick. Wish you success and have a enjoyable time teaching this trick. :)
@navaxtina Thanks for the lovely comment! I'm sure it will be very cute to see Lua doing this trick! Be sure to post a video response after Lua learnt this trick! I will be looking forward to see it!
Wonderful. I have a Chihuahua and they are such smart dogs, people just don't give them enough credit. Great tutorial on how to teach this, splitting not lumping. I love clicker training.
@Spin2Weave Thanks for the nice comment. Yea, chihuahuas are smart but not many people realized their talents. It is so sad to see that. I love clicker training too. Dogs learn better when a trick is split into many, simple steps.
@kikopup Thanks! That's great! I am excited and will be looking forward to your video. I am sure Kiko will learn this trick very fast as she is so clever and I am sure she will look very cute doing this trick! :) Xiao xiao will scratch my back without me instructing her to do so when she wants a treat. I will then laugh at her silly idea of earning a treat from me and give her a treat. That is why dogs are wonderful......cause they made your day.

I decided against scratching my back after he did it once and I think I almost died in pain lol I am just gonna upload video now of him scratching my leg instead :)
Digivee 1 year ago

Thanks!

Wonderful. I have a Chihuahua and they are such smart dogs, people just don't give them enough credit. Great tutorial on how to teach this, splitting not lumping. I love clicker training.
Spin2Weave 1 year ago
@Spin2Weave Thanks for the nice comment. Yea, chihuahuas are smart but not many people realized their talents. It is so sad to see that. I love clicker training too. Dogs learn better when a trick is split into many, simple steps.

Wow! You come up with the coolest dog tricks!!! I will defiantly teach Kiko this trick and then link it to your tutorial! Thanks!
kikopup 1 year ago 2
@kikopup Thanks! That's great! I am excited and will be looking forward to your video. I am sure Kiko will learn this trick very fast as she is so clever and I am sure she will look very cute doing this trick! :) Xiao xiao will scratch my back without me instructing her to do so when she wants a treat. I will then laugh at her silly idea of earning a treat from me and give her a treat. That is why dogs are wonderful......cause they made your day.
