It is sad true. This movie is based on true facts that happened with lithuanian girl. And this movie was filmed in Estonia. However I don't know why creators of this film decided to use russian language. One of the explanations could be that girl playing Lilja is russian actress.
Amazing film. Moodysson kicks you in the teeth with such a power that you don't even expect it and then he's not letting you to stop watching. This movie is simply one of the best cinematographic pictures of Swedish new cinema. Must see!
This is probably the best movie I've ever seen. This movie shows what happens quite often in Eastern Europe. I'm also Eastern European and everybody wants to go to the richer countries for a better life, because if you're not rich, you just have a shit life. Horrible to see how her own mother leaves her and than this disgusting guy that uses her as a prostitute just to be rich. The director of this movie just did such a good job by picking the right music at the right moments... amazing!
The best film of Lukas Moodysson, a great film maker!!
amazing film. blew my mind. Lilya 4 Ever is (currently at least) free on google videos for those of you who haven't seen it. Had more of an impact on me than any number of policy documents or newspaper articles about human trafficking. we should all be lobbying our governments to control this crime. big thumbs up to Lukas Moodysson
Any of you who live in a first world country and wanna whinge wear goth make up and complain about how hard your life is watch this movie and quit bitchin.
I can only bring myself to watch this movie once as its far far too depressing. Totally brilliant movie though and will recommend it to anyone, but it touches the very soul of your body this movie.... and as for Rammstein songs, they are also brilliant, and this song is perfect for this movie.
I can only bring myself to watch this movie once ! Its so majorly depressing to watch :((( It really hits the core of your soul this movie.... bloody brilliant though. And I have to say Rammsteins songs are simply brilliant as well.... perfect song for this movie.
@Maariee Lilya does not live in Russia, she is definitely from post soviet union republic, but not Russia. It is one of the Baltic republics, which is part of European union right now. It never says the name of the country, but I would assume it is Estonia, since the currency they used in the movie was krone.
@erikah87 it is from Estonia, the director at least Estonian, and the movie is in russian because it was oriented mostly to russian market, where it act succeeded.
@dusyad The director is Lukas Moodysson and the film is from Sweden. It's about a young russian girl, Lilja, coming to Malmö in Sweden... she kills herself jumping from a bridge in Malmö, It's a movie about trafficking
@Isismusicnow Sorry i know it is a little late to response, but.. Yes, the movie is filmed by a Swedish director. The movie mostly takes part in a small Estonian city. The family is Russian; therefore, the girl is Russian. The movie is in Russian, and that's my first language, so I watched it couple of times in original without subtitles; hence, I DO know the plot and the idea behind it. But thanks for info anyways.
@antemanhejsan2 Well i have seen the movie couple of times, and can totally say that not the most of the movies is in sweden, only a part of it. And if you look at the plot of the movie it is not the most important part of it.
@dusyad That's not Estonia, she was from Lithuania. Her true name was "Danguole". She borned in city "Telsiai" but growed up in "Kaunas" Died 16 years old.

I feel like shit. Do you think if I would create a charity for similar kinds in Russia, would anyone in USA care to help? Any suggestions how to create it? Thank you!
There seems to be some confusion - so I'll try to explain. The girl is Russian but living in Estonia. The place where she lives is apparently a poor Russian community within Estonia.
Yeah, a lot of the scenes are places not far from where I live in Tallinn. Kind of irritating when people just group all those "Eastern European places" together and call it "Russia".
Because all prostitutes are forced into the profession, kept prisoners and taken advantage of, they're all kidnapped and brutally raped. That's a tad simplistic, no?
why the hell in every single summary of this movie made in English there is that Lilja lives in Russia? it isn't Russia for God's sake, it's Estonia! Ever heard about it? It's the separate country, you know? Not part of Russia, not city in Russia, not Russia at all.
i went to the movie and watched this film at the premiere! i could´nt stop crying. everyone should watch this movie. and if your not from sweden, look for it with subtitles! thank you for posting this.
Yeah, the only Swedish you can hear is the woman at the H&M store saying thank you and the old man in the apartment who wants to know what she did "in school today".
This movie made me feel like shit. But I think everyone should watch it. Very very realistic feel and downright disturbing. Best movie I've seen in a long time.
I've never seen such a strong, sad but good film. Very shocking, i couldn't watch it again because of its stunning, sad reality. But everybody should have seen it! And keep it in mind when you see prostitutes!
everyone sould watch this move, "Lilja 4-ever" . It shows the reality of prostitution in sweden and europe. the movie have 12 wins and eleven nominations in different awardshows. lukas moodysson, the writer and director, have done an awsome job with this movie. it really touch your heart !!
really very sad movie, I saw it twice and twice crying in the end. rammstein made a very good song for it, but I from middle Europe (Slovakia) know that this movie just reflects a cruel reality we people do not want to see, I see it often but just after watching this movie I asked myself on my fckin` ignorance... kill`em all child abusers, kill the rapers, revive the humanity, help everybody you can and maybe the mankind will get better. otherwise kill the ignorants and IT WILL!

i have seen it 5 times and its sucks ass!!! fucking movie this hapened in sweden but not whit this girl but anoter. i live in sweden and my skol talked about it nerely all the time i hate the movie but the song and the russians is greate
Ignorance is bliss. I live in Estonia (this movie was filmed there) and I can tell you this could happen anyone in anywhere.
This movie portrays perfectly the life of Estonian suburban areas after the collapse of soviet union in 1990-1999. After the soviet union the most of Russians living in Estonia lost their jobs because they can't speak Estonian language and they didn't expect that all to happen. They don't want to move in to the Russia too because the life is more worse in there.
i can't believe, finally i found this film!!!i've been looking for it so long.....amazing film, showing a sad and raw truth no one wants to see and everyone pretend there is not and pretend being blind in front of that.....
where where you looking for this film? in black market lol? i mean if you google search for a torrent u will find many torrents in second, or u can even watch it directly from google videos... so cant imaging how where u "looking" for it...
.....i meant looking for it cause i watched it and i didn't know what was the title.... before saying things you even didn't know and saying wrong and stupid things at least ask how things really are before saying idiot things please....
Everyone should see this movie. I am a 32 year old, happy and strong guy in control of my emotions. But this masterpiece touched me like nothing else I've ever experienced. The whole audience was in shock during the end credits. The silence was only broken by the sound of some people crying.
As far from escapism you can get. Go see it. But be prepared. If you have a heart you will feel bad after seeing it. Very bad.
I wish I never saw it. But I give it 10 out of 10.
Well, this movie takes place in the Estonian town of Paldiski. But yes, in many rural Russian towns and cities, the collapse of the Soviet Union bought an immense amount of poverty. Life sucks there. Period. I guess times got a little bit better since the default ended. But life still sucks there!
It's certainly not as horrific. I guess if you'd film the poorest people in a ghetto somewhere in America, you could also portray a very depressing picture of the entire country. Lilja's home is in Paldiski, although it has improved quite a lot over the years, it's still the most depressing town in the country filled with only Russian immigrants. This movie told a story about one ugly story, but that doesn't mean the entire country 'sucks' as you put it. I like it here anyway.
It's horrific. Suburban Russia is a shithole. There is no doubt. I have relatives there. It sucks. There is no opportunity there, everything fell apart. They were poor even during the USSR, but they got their shipments of food, but now, nothing. These are not just isolated ghettos, this is pretty much everything in Russia except Moscow, St. Petersburg, and a select few regions.
Yes, I'm sorry, I guess you misunderstood me. Estonia really is not much of a shithole except a few isolated areas. I was referring to how most Russian towns are like Paldiski. The Baltics never really were a part of the USSR, their character was always much different.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i am swedish and i don't want to be that anymore!! after that movie my heart was i teo pieces! damn me!! damn everybody in sweden!! i'm soooo moving to USA!
the girl does not live in russia.she lived in estonia just when it got free from russia...there are many russians in estonia ,500 000 of them....and it was in the city called Narva-it's the closest city to Russia.
Bye the way, i live in ex-USSR country, and I know this reality. Thank you for your comments to the film. I don`t know how else to open the eyes of the world on such problems as Human Traffic, specially in the ex-USSR countries. May be one of you, who has seen the movie will try to help, when you see may be on the street or in supermarket a girl with "screaming for help" eyes... Just do first step and may be you will save her life.
It is a story based on a true story. And the reall girl was from Lithuania.
The same is happening nowadays... sad, but human trafficking was, is and will be.

It is one of the hardest movies i've ever seen, although there's no blood or zombies or saws...
It's about the real life.. and THAT is the real horror!!!

And therefore the most of them got only 2 choices: become a criminal or sell their body.

But I give it 10 out of 10.

this is how its really in Russia?

Well, this movie takes place in the Estonian town of Paldiski. But yes, in many rural Russian towns and cities, the collapse of the Soviet Union bought an immense amount of poverty. Life sucks there. Period. I guess times got a little bit better since the default ended. But life still sucks there!
crazypianistik 3 years ago 2
It's certainly not as horrific. I guess if you'd film the poorest people in a ghetto somewhere in America, you could also portray a very depressing picture of the entire country. Lilja's home is in Paldiski, although it has improved quite a lot over the years, it's still the most depressing town in the country filled with only Russian immigrants. This movie told a story about one ugly story, but that doesn't mean the entire country 'sucks' as you put it. I like it here anyway.
WaiSech 3 years ago
It's horrific. Suburban Russia is a shithole. There is no doubt. I have relatives there. It sucks. There is no opportunity there, everything fell apart. They were poor even during the USSR, but they got their shipments of food, but now, nothing. These are not just isolated ghettos, this is pretty much everything in Russia except Moscow, St. Petersburg, and a select few regions.
crazypianistik 3 years ago
I was commenting about Estonia before, not Russia. Because this movie was party filmed over here.
And I'm aware how Russians live outside of booming regions such Moscow and St.Petersburg and it's sad really.
WaiSech 3 years ago
Yes, I'm sorry, I guess you misunderstood me. Estonia really is not much of a shithole except a few isolated areas. I was referring to how most Russian towns are like Paldiski. The Baltics never really were a part of the USSR, their character was always much different.
