I saw this movie when it came out in 1964. I was 10 years old and the close-ups of the guys on their surfboards did not look so horribly phony as they do today. I'm glad for that.
I did not remember who played the character "Eskimo" and when I watched this clip, I thought I saw Robert Mitchum on a surfboard! Turns out it was his son James Mitchum, but what a resemblance! And hey, is Susan Hart cute or what!!!
Growing up in SoCal in the 60's I was INUNDATED with surf culture. I spent most summers at Huntington Beach and San Clemente. I was poor and Mexican so I couldn't afford a surfboard, but I was an avid bodysurfer and boogie-boarder. The punk-ass "locals" (white boys) thought they owned the place. The chicks were stuck-up. Add to that the music that was copied to DEATH.So when Jimi came along and said, "You'll never hear surf music again" I was right there with him!! I will always love the ocean
@jimistreets1 hell i'm white and i remember going to huntington beach in '75. they were so stuck up and concieded, and all blond hair, and so i only stayed about 2 minutes, and drove to dana point instead, where they were much friendlier and more fun!
@m1kewithaone Yup! After the age of about 13 I went almost exclusively to San Clemente. Dana Point is really nice too. At Scumington, even in the mid-70's there were wanna-be "surf-thugs"', which we used to just laugh at. Now the punks actually carry guns! One thing has remained constant ever since the 60's...the girls are FREEKING STUPID!!
@jimistreets1 lol! i haven't been to the beach in years now, but i just go to venice and santa monica and i like manahtan bch, because after about 11:30pm, you can take your dogs and let them run loose and the cops don't care.
Did any of the actors in this movie know how to surf? I just don't know why they don't do a remake of this movie.with all the rmakes they do with the same movies. did this movie not do well?
@grandmarazz well, i was only 9 when i saw it, and it did well for me. i've always remembered this song, that's why i'm here tonight. ... did they re-make any surfer movies? i don't know...
I know you are right but I have this fear of the water . as a kid my Mom took me for swimming lesson and I was doing good untiluntil we got this yong punk who should never should have try to teach any kid. Anywayhe toss me into the deep end and I freak out and when he got me out of the water I came out swinging. I guess I had a panic attack, don't know if I will ever get over the fear of the water.
@grandmarazz it wouldn't look the the same riding the surf with a walking frame. Only joking.I was surfing at that time, and I still ride my antique" Plastic Machine" board.
@winterka100 Can't swim to save my life but after seeing this movie I wish that I could swim. the surfers make it look so easy to surf.. I always think who I would like to see as in this movie.. I ask myself do any of those acters know how to surf or did they get pick for this movie because they look good in swiming trunks (LOL)
@grandmarazz Swimming is easy to learn, you can get lessons watever your age. Once you know how, you will wish you had done it sooner. Not only will it open up so much fun, it may save your life, or you may save someone else's. Also then you can learn to surf. It's not all that difficult. Don't just sit there, DO IT!
GREAT job with this video! I always did like the way they did the credits at the end - but the way you mixed it with clips, etc - was cool! thanks for helping bring back the memories of this movie
Wonder if all these big name stars could actually surf...m aybe ONE?if not the real surfers in Hawaii got to make a few dollars? James Mitchum is Robert Mitchum's son, also was in "Thunder Road". Supper prayer: Good food good meat, It's late, LET'S EAT!
Great 60's surfing film, rare and seldom seen on TV. Very good surfing footage at the end - of some the world's best surfer's of the day riding the really big monster waves!
This would have been a perfect post if the original soundtrack was used & not a retread...Still not too late to remake.......Excellent video, but.......RIP Jan Berry.....

This seems to be a rather secondary, somewhat obscure version of this great song. The original, authentic released J & D version is far superior ... great footage from the movie however ...
@clydesplace -- Most guys have heard the classic break-up lines such as "Can we just be friends?" and "I need my space." I can only imagine how the guy engaged to Dolores Hart felt when he got hit with "I've decided to become a nun." (I've read that they're still "good friends.")
does anybody know what happened to the beautiful susan hart?? the brunette girl that does the slinky dance scene on the beach in hawaiin costume. she still alive and well?
Susan Hart is alive & well as of last year. Give up acting i believe not to long after this flim, to give her Heart to Bigger things she became a Nun,in Europe,& still does charitys out here in Los Angles.Still looks Pretty as ever! Was in Valley News Paper last year. Hope this helps?
Somehow my dad heard about skateboards in 1963. Came home from work and tore up our skates to make our first. Later I got one with the clay wheels and it was a death trap. Everything got stuck in them and you'ld go flying off over the top of the thing. And no weenie helmets in those days. First skateboard championship ever: LaPalma Park, Anaheim, CA. Dang, I was riding mine when my mom came outside to tell me Ruby shot Oswald.
I didn't pay for my first skateboard because they weren't yet in stores; I took steel wheels of my roller skates and nailed them to a board; we called the commercial versions "store-bought bastards" because for a long time it wasn't cool to ride a skateboard you hadn't made yourself
Yes, my steel wheels skateboard did not work well at all. My friend Skip had an older sister. He "took" her skates, we removed the wheel portions, cut them in half(one pair for him, one pair for me).
We cut out our own boards, screwed on the wheels, and that's it. Except for one thing. We didn't put the wheels on straight. We learned how to skateboard real good on "ours". But when we got on a store bought one, we could not control it. The wheels were too "straight". LOL.
I grew up in the 60's and well remember the surf fever back then. For us with no oceans, they came up with the skateboard. Sidewalk surfing was huge with us kids. I paid $4 for my first one in 1965-it had steel wheels! Lucky I survived.
I couldn't afford the expensive clay wheels version, it was $8. It was a fever for a couple years, at least.

In '63 I converted my grandmother's wooden ironing
board using my metal wheeled skates. Two wheels in
the front, six across the back. Extremely noisy and
lacked any lateral coefficient of friction, so it was like ball bearings on ice. Later converted it to a snowboard
with a rug screwed onto the top and added a one inch skeg. Worked great and I still have it.
