Watch the reaction of the guy in top left corner of the frame when Billy makes his comment.
The refs should have given themselves a "T" for handing a microphone to Billy Tubbs in the heat of the moment like that. After all I'm sure they had already heard him say over the years, what did they expect him to do?
Yeah..I remember the game...the officiating was a complete joke that first half..OU went lights out shortly afterwards. We were way too great and talented to had not won the title in '88..Still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
Billy Tubbs, my hero!! While at OU I had to interview a coach for a class, most chose high school coaches, but I decided I'd try for Tubbs...he didn't know me at all but was more than happy to help out a student. I will always respect him for that.
I remember this game, and while OU did indeed win, nobody "killed" Mizzou (unless you consider a couple points victory in OT as a "killing"), and Mizzou was not #1 at the time. Nonetheless, it was a classic game, even without Tubbs' officiating comment....that just made it even more memorable! :-)
@TusPapi Who cares what happened in the regular season? No one cares about or remembers that. What people do remember is Danny and the Miracles not Billy Tubs and the disappointing Sooners.
Im a sooner fan and i remember throwing stuff around i was so pissed at the refs and us. When he mic'ed up and said that i started yelling lol. we were trailing big time and made a helluva run. That was about the Loudest i had ever seen that place. My favorite player was Stacey King.
I was there. The officiating WAS that bad, but that isn't why this is so awesome. OU was going through the motions and losing. Billy wanted the officials better calls. But it woke the team up and we killed #1 Missouri. Cost Billy $100,000, which he's been rumored to say was money well spent.
I was watching this game on ESPN. It was funny then, and it still is funny almost 20 years later. Tubbs' teams were fun to watch; they'd regularly score over 100 points.
Bob Knight had done virtually the same thing (taken the public address mic and admonished the crowd for throwing things) at Indiana just the week before or so. I was in attendance at that game. I've been telling this story for years, saying that Tubbs got a technical foul for doing the same thing he'd seen Knight do. I had forgotten that Tubbs said "regardless of how terrible the officiating is!" HA!
I never got to see them in person. However they played a home and home series against Loyola Marymount vs. Oklahoma and the games had maybe 250 point combined both games. But yeah OKLAHOMA in retrospect, they were cocky and fun as hell to watch on tv and played a tough schedule
I was at the game against American where they scored 97 in the first half, winning 173-101. From the stands, we couldn't believe we didn't make it to 200 that night. Mookie Blaylock wouldn't let them past their own free throw line. When asked about running up the score he relied, "If they don't like it, they should get better."
and he get's a technical foul
