  • so does this mean if you dont have much body fat and you do cardio 4 to long it will start to burn muscle. do you have a rough idea how long to do cardio per bodyfat % thanks

  • 2 QUESTIONS - 1- After we have done our cardio should we consume our breakfast straight after?

2- Will the cardio be enough for the day (Excluding day to day cardio)?

    Great Vidoe!:)

  • @147freestyler yes on #1. Yes thats the whole point. Do 10 to 14 of high intensity as opposed to the boring non productive long cardio......thanks

  • @totalhealth4life so how do world class athletes that are in tip top shape and so ripped do extreme cardio for hours and look the way they do? (basketball players) (soccer players) (ufc fighters)

  • @147freestyler yup.........HIIT........yes

  • @147freestyler eat right after the cardio.Strength training help a lot 'cause you spend more calories to maintain your muscules even at rest.P.S. Don't drink coffee before cardio like this guy says--drink water

  • @totalhealth4life

    Thannks.

  • does protein boost your metabolism?

  • @thesoundofmaddness Yes it does.......drink a shake about 30 min before you workout

  • @totalhealth4life Hey there Rico, big fan, also very big on health and fitness. My question is this, since you are coming off the fast in the morning and muscle unfortuneately is the first source of energy used, wouldnt cardio without any protein make you lose muscle??? Thx for your time

  • @ummmj First thing you burn is fat as their is no glycogen (carbs)

  • @totalhealth4life ill take your word for it than. How long does HITT keep your metab. up for afterwards??

  • idk if u check comment but answer this. i wake up n do 15min high tense cardio. people say u lose fat n muscle after 40min coz energy is taken from all parts of body. i just waanna lose fat but not muscle. after i lose fat, i build muscle. what i do?

  • @hoteldota You do both at the same time.....remember lean muscle burns fat too. HIIT is great first thing waking up on nothing or with a cup of organic black coffee........it revs up your metabolism for 4 hours and fat burning ability. The biggest way to lose fat is thru diet. NO GRAINS will melt the fat off bro

  • @totalhealth4life What's the best foods you can eat for energy if you're cutting your grains out? A high carb fruit like a banana before you work out, then just low carb vegetables the rest of the time? When I don't eat grains I feel my workouts suffer because I lack energy.

  • Couldn't you just take a protein shake before morning cardio or would your body use it as energy?

  • @JaKeth3snake i would have suggested that if it was the right thing to do for fat burning. Im not making this stuff up bro

  • @totalhealth4life huh just seems counter productive, Ill try this out for a month though. I've been cutting for 2 months now and I've lost 30 lbs already. Approaching 12% so ill let u know if this gets me past my plateu

  • Hey Rico, the whole morning cardio thing is where you lose me. From the knowledge I've racked up in the past 6 years of bodybuilding, I understand that the second you wake up in the morning, you're body is under the most stress. Also, it is basically starving because it hasn't had anything to eat for 8 hours or more (depending on how much sleep one gets). Cortisol levels are highest in the morning which means catabolism takes place. How would cardio on an empty stomach help with fat burn?

  • @ishinish First thing in the morning, you get a large cortisol dump and a glucose dump from sugar stored in the liver. Cortisol causes muscle consumption and causes insulin resistance. High cortisol causes muscle to be converted to amino acids. The liver converts these amino acid into sugar. High cortisol causes this sugar to be stored as fat. Exercise is an additional stress, so morning cardio will cause conversion of at to muscle. This video is wrong.

  • Hey, I saw this comment earlier and was wondering the same thing. Wouldn't it be best to drink a protein shake in the morning and then do cardio? (Instead of coffee). Since your body is catabolic when you wake up? Would fat be burned anyway even if you muscles are "starving" in the morning?

  • @NickTseTennis From my understanding and research, fat would probably be stored depending on what you consumed the previous night. Everything you eat plays in important role on what follows the next day. If your body is starving (in a catabolic), then your body would actually store the fat for survival. There are so many factors involved man lol. Almost a contradiction in itself. I personally think a protein shake first thing in the morning would be the best way to go. Just my opinion though =)

  • i have 12% bodyfat and i want to drop it down to 9 you sure its the right way or i end up burning muscle?

  • @77osfp come on bro...........would I say something if I was just guessing? Do i look like i haven't retained my muscle? OF course I'm sure! LOL

  • hey bro. if i drink a protein shake before my morning cardio i will burn fat without burning muscle?

  • @77osfp best to do morning cardio on an empty stomach with just a cup of coffee (organic)

  • except when you wake up and do cardio without breakfast.. would you burn fat or muscle?

  • @kertcobainSA Fat

  • Great video very informative..

  • Hey rico, just a couple of questions, i am a football player and i am moving from one position to another i am 17 years old i am about 5'9 or 5'10. I have gone from 210 pounds to 180 pounds, but i still have a gut, im doing strength training along with some cardio, will doing more cardio interfere with me trying to build muscles? i am doing actual workouts Monday-Friday with Saturday Yoga, and rest period sunday

  • @MrSAYITAGAIN09 keep cardio at one hour a week HIIT........do ten to 14 min after lifting

  • What do you guys think of fasted morning cardio for increased fat burning???.....i was going to try this new approach after reading about it..........plan is to wake up drink a dark cup of coffee and take in about 5 - 10 grams of BCAA's.....Cardio will consist of 30-45 mins of light cardio, like the jump rope or heavy bag/ double end bag drills.....any thoughts on this??

  • instead of coffee can I drink a glass of milk I don't like coffee

  • Hey Rico.

Is it possible for ab workouts to make my stomach look bigger afterwards? and which is better for abs, resistance training or exercises that involve holding the abs tight, like a plank?

  • @MOADZ15 crunches all 3 ways......

  • @MOADZ15 the plank and other exercises such as the side plank and tri-pods will work your deep core muscles(transverse Abdominus) these are the muscles that are priority when training the abs, crunches will target your (rectus abdominus) the shallow part of ur abs. but overall getting a good stomach is around 80 percent nutrition and 20 percent ab exercises

  • @cheatingwanker thaaanks man, thats much more helpful than the other answer lol, thanks

  • can u suggest some cardio exercises...I am totally confused which cardio should i do?

How much and how intensely should i run? or any thing that will help me to build my six pack....I am into bodybuilding for about 3 years but i avoided cardio fearing to lose muscle (is it true?) t...but....which ...i dont know(sorry for t bad english)

  • he says to do cardio when we wake up but we do everyday or just 3 or4 times per week?

  • Hi rico i workout every muscle of my body unce a week, but i love to do strength training unce or twice at week too...what your think?...could affect me for my muscle growth?......sorry for my english.

  • @jaimegaton I don't know anything about your lifestyle so it's impossible to answer your question inteliigently...seems like your training is lacking bro

  • Hey Rico!

This might be weird, but I'm 13 and I weigh almost 160lbs. I do 50 sit-ups every other night and sometimes an additional 30 push-ups. Will that help me lose weight? And also I'm not chubby or anything, I'm just tall with a medium sized belly topped off with "man boobs" just saying...

  • @donkits1 No bro......that won't do anything. Sorry. You lose weight by cardio, proper nutrition, and strengh training. Sit ups dont give you a 6 pack. Everyone's got one but you have to lose the fat around it to see it. If you can get my book it will give you all the info you need to build a solid foundation the rest of your life

  • great shape for someone who is 54. well done

  • is having just a cup of coffe a nice breakfast?

  • @GomezB69 its not his breakfast its just for the caffein to give him a boost to get through the cardio...then after the cardio he'll have his breakfast

  • Hi Rico! Hope you are doing good :)

I bought flax seed oil capsules:

    Ultimate Nutrition Flaxseed Oil Softgels

Each capsule has 1000mg of organic flax seed oil. I have three per day (with meals or with a protein shake). Is this an overdose?

  • thnx dude ive always thought running in the morning would be best..

and im gonna start not skipping small meals i usally just eat ceral breakfast and evnings ..somtimes i would eat big plates of rice and meat tho

  • Rico I have a question,

Because of work (8-5) kinda job i wanted to start implementing my workouts again in the morning; Lifting then ending with a 15 minute interval training run. I take a creatine with caffeine in the morning so I wont be drinking coffee, but what would be some suggestions on something quick and light i can eat to sustain me while im working out? After that I can manage my food, water(quality is my next goal) and protein faitly decent..any advice? Thanks..

  • The 1st tip was great, I'm a start 2moro morning.

  • should i drink a protein shake before or after my cardio in the morning?

  • i would not show my abs if i were you, they are not that great.

  • hey Rico, kinda different question than you mostly get, but right now ive been on a slow clean bulk gained almost 35 pounds of lbm and like 2 lbs of fat in 6 months, not too bad in my opinion, but i was wondering, i am currently doing 10 minutes os sprints everyday, broken into three sprint sessions of 3 minutes to avoid catabolism, just enough to maintain endurance while bulking, do you think i should totally avoid cardio/ any other activities besides 1 1/2 hrs of weights to avoid muscle loss?

  • Hi Rico!

I've been doing HIIT cardio in the mornings before having breakfast. And a lot of low weight, high rep gym workouts in the evenings.

I feel my biceps, shoulder, etc sizes have also dropped in an attempt to lose belly and chest fat!

What can I do to prevent loss of muscle weight?

  • @nitro2u2 Keep your protein uptake the same!

  • Hi Rico!

What do u reckon is the best way to get rid of "man boobs"?

I read it may be caused by the presence of some hormones and simple cardio fat burning exercises alone might not suffice. What are your quick thoughts and advice on this? Many thanks :)

  • @nitro2u2 get your hormone levels checked by your doctor

  • @nitro2u2 try doing push-ups, i'm not an expert nd i'm not very sure but push-ups do build up chest muscle, but i'm not sure if it burns fat but i bet it does idk. if ur chest is sore the next day then it's working, i think u have to rest while it's sore. idk man i hope i'm helping, good luck to u! :)

  • @GomezB69 thanks !!! :D

  • Hello Rico!

I want to lose some body fat so I'm doing interval training in the evenings at about 9pm. I do not have any heavy meals after the training... many be a protein shake and some fruits (bananas, papaya, pineapple, etc).

Does this look like a healthy plan?

  • @nitro2u2 sounds good as you dont want to stuff yourself before going to sleep

  • Comment removed

  • Wouldn't eating carbs AFTER work out just make them sit in your tummy, then?

Plus, I'm sure most of them are burned throughout the day, from sitting, walking, talking, etc.

  • i will to buy the book, if is transcribed in spanish, because i don't speak english well

  • @Crush22 It's englsh of course bro

  • Mr. Connor. not to get u mad but i've been informed by a weight training teacher that drinking coffee and then doing some type of cardio is not a smart decision.

i'm really enjoying the videos and its all very interesting. like i said i don't mean to offend you sir.

  • everybody is different...........millions of people use thermogens for their workouts

  • @totalhealth4life Well i think he is speaking to the acid in the coffee, myself, being a endurance athlete(triathlete and marathoner) i can, say, sip coffee on the drive to a race as long as its quite a while before(a few hours at least) but i cant just down coffee and hop on a cycle or it makes me puke, it may also be the intensity though as i focus on cardio and do very little weight training so my cardio training levels may be much higher.

  • @s2Trigga such a formal comment, sicken me

  • I run highschool track. the "fat burning zone" is for long distance runners. for the average joe doing running for fat loss, you want to burn energy, it doesnt matter if you burn fat or carbs. Why? because carbs turn into fat when you dont use them. and if your using your fat then eat carbs, the carbs will just turn into the fat you used.

  • Finally someone on you tube thats not talking crap. Thanks Rico

  • I agree!!!

  • hey I'm ivan from peru and i would like to ask you if it's ok if i work out my abs everyday or 4 times per week ..

    i really need this info

    thanks for your time

  • you need to give your abs rest just like every other muscle

  • thanks really !!!

  • Great Advice. Advice I need to get back to doing. Are you HIIT in the morning? I found that it works great int he morning. I can't wait until it get warmer and I can do Sprint in the morning again.

  • I dont really want to contradict you but,

I hear that working out in the morning DOESNT burn fat, that instead it burns muscle because your body reverts to muscle when you have no food in your body

  • look at the guy whose giving you the advice, 1.he's obviously fit and not burning his muscle up 2. experts that write some stuff like "I hear that working out in the morning DOESNT burn fat, that instead it burns muscle because your body reverts to muscle when you have no food in your body " probably have never worked out in their life!!!. 3. Rico lives this stuff man, LOOK at him, the proof is in the pudding!

  • It was more of a question. I dont know whether working out on the morning does burn muscle or not. I was looking for an answer sorry if i made it unclear.

  • Thanks for all the tips mate.

  • true inspiration

  • helpful video!

i just puchased your book btw

  • great!

  • Awesome, informative video!

  • rico you will live a long life

  • THANX VERY MUCH

  • 10 minutes of HIIT (High Intense Interval Training) Go run for 1 minute, rest for 1 minute, is what he is talking about... I do like 15-30 minutes of HIIT though, sometimes it gets too much, and today I ran 10 km without even being tired, AT ALL... like I felt like I was flying, so HIIT definitely works, and my cuts (defined muscle) is more visible now...

I do bodyweight training - 20-30 minutes every 3 days...

Cardio every other day - HIIT

  • STFU with HIIT its not even a real abbreviation or whatever its called!

  • @mammalbruiser High Intensity Interval Training. How is that not an, "abbreviation or whatever it's called"?

  • Now, should I do cardio in the morning if I am looking to gain weight.

  • you're very helpful.

  • ahh coffee, 1st its natures caffeine, which we all know caffeine speeds up metabolism, 2nd its a diaretic, it helps you shed water, but the use of creamers and sugar may reverse what you are trying to accomplish, learn to drink it black and use sugar substitue, or if you have to use sugar (like me) use unrefined sugar, not regular white sugar, with moderation, remember sugar is not the total anti-christ for losing weight, it is a carrier for protein delivery and synthesis.......

  • i am just not sure. why do you drink coffee in the morning as to perhaps a small bowl of veggies. in your other videos you disagree with milk, yet you drink coffee. Is it really true that coffee isnt as bad as market milk? please help. the question is bothering me. thx rico

  • Is it also effective to get up, drink coffee and jumping rope instead of running?

  • yes

  • question rico..was wondering why ricemilk n not regular milk?? :S

  • Rico

How long is your normal morning cardio?

  • ten minutes!

  • Wicked. I can handle that!

  • Is drinking water ok before you run?

  • of course........hydration

  • good tips dude ur in really good shape hard 2 tell ur 54!!

  • just wondering you said not to eat before you do your cardio but is it alright to eat somthing small so you have energy?

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOO just coffee.....do you want to burn fat from the start or take 20 min burning the food you just ate before you burn the fat???

  • alright thanks alot for the advice, i will try it out see how she goes.

One more thing, is drinking whey protein after cardio all good ?

  • excellent advice, do you have any guide on caloric intake based on weight and activity levels?

  • i dont count calories........it makes you like a freaking bookkeeper.......i only count protein

  • all bullshit aside, have you taken performance enhancers or what?

  • ive been like this for 20 years......never did any...a few years ago I did a blood test and found out I had very very dangerously low testosterone and am on a physician guided hormone replacement therapy program to maintain healthy levels.... you need to supplement with DHEA, melatonin and other things as you age as they decline in your body

  • that an honest answer i was looking for. i look foward to listening to you in up coming vids !!!

  • no reason to lie

  • Hey Rico, I was wondering if you do HIIT in the morning I know you are burning fat but I also heard that you burn a little bit of muscle to. Is this true?

  • cool somebody who actualy knowa what their saying

  • do not forget about the BCAA's before and after workout :)

  • Good advice

  • hey man..great videos.i have a pretty good diet, how long do u recommend to do cardio for if i wanna achieve results like yours ?

  • HIIT 10 min a day x 6 days or 14 min a day x 4 days

  • thanks man

  • hi rico just wnted to ask i do HIT on a cycle machine instead of a treadmill is this a bad thing coz i hate using the treadmill i do see fat loss still so it is working im just wondering si it better to use a treadmill for mre of a fat burn

  • you burn the most calories when you move your body.....if you are talking about spinning yes its good....but sitting on the bike machines and just peddling is lazy.....you aren't burning calories or using much energy.....they shouldn't even be in the gym

  • hi rico..........i seem to get much leaner walking for an hour every day than jogging..why is this please?????i do this on top of my weights but i find i am getting leaner but not sure whther i am as fit cos im not running as much????

  • i do HIIT.......much better than anything

  • so you recommend to rest about 60 sec between each set? isnt that too much for like the 1st or second sets?

  • 60 is good.....its anaerobic not aerobic

  • Hey rico, hope you read this, just wanted to know your thoughts on jump rope?

I wake up at 10 every day(Im a waiter) and do my run or jump rope.

    All the best!

  • jumping rope is the best!

  • hey man, i LOVE ur videos

i started watching just today and i now actually have a clue what im gonna do when i have time to hit the gym.

    thanks!

  • thats exactly why I made them......you dont need to pay for a personal trainer

  • How do you do HIIT on a treadmill? It takes 5-10 sec to change speeds

  • yea you have to wait for it to speed up to max then after one min i jump to the side until i slow it down to a 2.0 and walk a min

  • For HIIT, does it have to be a constant sprint or can I reach a point where I have to turn around start my sprint again (re-accelerate)?

  • full sprint for one min then slow walk or whatever machine you are using for a min.......you can do this on any cardio machine

  • I can't sprint on my treadmill or the power goes out lol. Don't treadmills work less muscles than running outside?

  • do it sprinting outside........thats great too

  • is it true that you gain fat if your eating past 8:00 P.M.? cuz i go to sleep at 9:00 or 10:00 P.M. and im trying to eat the 4-6 times a day.

  • make your last meal a protein shake with water

  • i tot u said in 1 of ur vid that after you drink the whey protein, you wait 20minuts and then eat whole food. do i still eat the whole food part since i finish my workout at around 9:00 P.M.

  • just do a shake. easy to digest

  • what kind of protein shake do you need to drink? and what kind of protein shake do you need to drink in the morning? and what do you drink instead if you got no protein shake? and last can i just eat rosted fish with nothing instead of protein shake because i get hungry.

  • yo rico, would a protein shake be best for the first meal after morning cardio? Since I would want to get protein in right away right? Or should I get a solid food meal

  • your choice

  • Great video, thanks for the advice. What would a good "breakfast" be while doing this HIIT and when should I have it?

  • do you subscribe to my totalhealth4life newsletter? if you don't you're missing out! I just posted a typical breakfast I had.....right after HIIT

  • Im 15 and i jog monday, wednesday and saturday and do soccer on tuesday friday and sunday. Is this an effective fat burning routine i have going. Also i go to the gym twice a week to build muscle. Will i see results with these two combined.

  • NO....do HIIT instead of jogging. Jogging is worthless. Only 2 days a week lifting weights isn't enough to be able to hit all of your muscles once each week to make any kind of gains either

  • Thanks for the advise.

  • whats HIT? or HIIT? is that like sprinting? and do you need whey isolate protein after a cardio in the morning or just a whole mean?

  • High Intensity Interval Training......sprint and walk for a minute each time on any machine ...fast then slow..do five to seven sets. Only 10 to 14 minutes!Either will do ......fat, carbs and protein

  • How do you feel about a morning protein shake immediately after waking up and then carrying out the cardio. What's a good meal for breakfast?

  • its the exact opposite of what you should do!! Did you not watch this video????????????????

  • lols. No bro i did watch the video very keenly, However proteins are a different energy source than hard carbs. I heard that protein shakes actually help boost your metabolisms. But now i know...

  • I was always thinking that you should drink a shake immediately after waking up, but look at Rico's body. If he says no, I tend to believe him. His body is proof enough to me.

  • hey nice tips, i do muscle work out 2 days on 1 day off which turns out to be 5 days a week, is that too much? i usually do

    1. chest/triceps

    2. back/biceps

    3, rest (cardio in morn)

    4, shoulders

    5. legs

    6. rest (cardio in morn)

    7. chest/triceps etc

    cheers

  • you're good

  • Sweet Thanks man, well I'm gonna do it either on a hill or at the track. I hate those stupid Tredmills.

  • Hey Rico, is it alright to do the HIIT outside? The tredmills at my gym wont let me do it.

  • you can do it on anything and anywhere

  • look good for 54 bro.

  • thanks......life is good when you are optimally healthy man!

  • I was just wondering cuz I can only do cardio as soon as I wake up on saturdays. i have school I'm only a senior in High School

  • prioritize your health...no excuses.....find the time if you value your health......its only one hour a week total......

  • Hey again I was wondering how often you do cardio? Could I get away with doing it once a week, or is that too little?

  • i do 10 min of HIIT 6 x a week

Once a week!!! bro......put just a LITTLE effort into it!

  • Hey Rico big fan here. I try to incorperate your workouts into my routine. I was wondering if the HIIT works for burning fat. I have a pretty flabby gut and I'd like to get rid of it. I'm happy about the rest of my body just not my stomach.

  • hell yea it does.

  • hey rico one more question dude is it really ok to have casein at night or is it bad?

  • i use isolate all the time now..casein bloats me and doesn't digest good...

  • Hey rico you are my hero i bought your book and i have listened to all your videos and the results have been remarkable my bf is 7% and i weight 200 pounds belive my people rico connor knows what he is talking about. I used to think i would never have a good body but know i do

  • dude puleeeeeeeze tell me you have before pics!!!

  • rico one of my workout routine is starting of with abdominal workouts then doing some cardio and later leg workouts...do u think it is good 2 do abs and then do cardio??...and is my workout effective?

  • all backwards....first do legs, second abs and third cardio

  • does doing HIIT in the morning also burn up muscle?

  • no.........fat. Its too short to affect muscle breakdown

  • I don't drink coffee, I can pass right? And is drinking water fine before?
