Hi Mick. Can't believe I've only just found this! AMAZING! You have incredible talent and your love for Vagelis' music really shines through in all the pieces of his that you've done.
I have a couple of questions.. I just got Arturia's CS80V. I see you're using it on this piece. How do you like it? I've not had time to play with it yet and was wondering if you had any pointers.. Also, I'd love to know what you're using for the choir parts. They sound really amazing.
@hdprice Hello and thankyou! I have to admit I did not use the arturia cs80v in this track, I just included it in the video because it looked good! I don't like the cs80v to be honest, I can't seem to recreate Vangelis sounds on it. I use ensoniq esq1 hardware synth from 1985 to recreate cs80 brass sounds. The choir is from a korg x5 synth, it does wonderful choir sounds. there is also an x5d which are very cheap to buy. thanks for listening, don't give up on the cs80v:)
You have a fine ear for timbre and for texture, not only in the Vangelis covers but in your own creations as well. It's got to be a lot of work, but we sure do enjoy the end results! Keep em comin.
Se mettre en avant c'est accepter la critique des autres ! ma culture musicale me permet de dire que c'est nul donc c'est nul ,quand on a du talent en musique on a pas besoin de tout ces instruments pour s'exprimer
Also in this track, the remarkable cymbal crash- that Vangelis uses most of the time in his orchestral scores- can be heard. According to your setup list, that sound is coming from the JUNO G. Well done!
I dont speak french but I get the hint of your reply. I understand in a way why you would say that, but the video is only a way to show the work I did in recreating the music. I dont claim to be a good keyboard player, or have 5 pairs of hands! The 150 keyboards you mention are necessary to build an atmosphere of the original . Even though I do not play all the keyboards in the video I have played them all while recording the track
Il n'y a rien de toi sur youtube apparemment (translation ; "and you, what are you playing for the music can with your 10 fingers? apparently nothing on youtube". Believe Mike that many more than this lonely guy are loving what you are sharing. He is probably feeling himself a bit jaleous of your talent.
I agree with the others: it's an outstanding cover! But please don't experiment with software synths. You have a lot of great hardware synths around you that can do almost everything :) (actually I love the CS80 lead sound from the Ensoniq)
Just dropped by to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a happy new year! I can see you've really come ahead on your production values, you've become a top producer, I think. Its great to see you achieve such things with some really modest gear. Its good for all us bedroom guys out here to see one of their own do such stellar work!
Hi Mick, I've had a bad run of luck with my health the last few months, a string of things. Its funny how I've had perfect health all my life, then a few problems all at once! Thankfully I'm fully better now, and will be back to doing some work (and demos) of P'08, and JP-8000, Korg Z1. I absolutely love the ESQ1, I reckon its not far off a CS80... theres something magic about it... or so I think!
Nice job again Mik300z.I have tried many software synths and must say some do sound great but I did not like the idea behind soft synths. A hardware synth always works the same. Every time you turn it on (today or five years from today) it still works the same way as the first day it was purchased. Software synth must be upgraded all the time to keep up with computer operating systems, so you are never finished paying for them. The greatest plus for soft synths is portability (if you need that).
yes mattsynth, I agree with the pros and cons as you mention. I have played about with the CS80v for the past few weeks and find the latency a big problem even though I have a decent computer.I will also need to upgrade my pc to cope with the enormous processing going on in the CS80v. That said, I was blown away by some of the patches from it, wonderful soundscapes I would not normally get from my hardware. I hope I eventually find a place for it in my music.
maybe the sound people need to hear, it isn't necessary to have The keyboard. vsts could do it as closest as possible. vst's are new ideas and need good processing power. buy a Macbook instead. you can have all instruments you want with almost no latency, inside a small notebook. the price, weight, space needed, heat and maintenance is greatly lower. trust me. :)
I think you'll find that part of the reason for "all the keyboards" is so that you can acess many sounds quickly. This is a technique that goes back to organ players, who had different sounds on different keyboard levels (manuals) In any case, a VST version of Micks main keyboards, the ESQ1, would'nt sound as good, as the ESQ1 has real analog filters. There is a VST version of the SQ-80 (updated ESQ1) Compare the sound and see for yourself which sounds better.
Thanks but I am not using the software yet Tony, tried doing a few tracks with ableton 7 but I get frustrated because of my lack of knowledge. The Arturia CS80v is only in the video for show. I've mentioned that in the info in case anyone is thinking of buying it and expecting it to give the lead type sound I have on my ESQ. It does have some great patches but I need to get around the programming. So different to hardware. Thought it would be the answer to my prayers but so far not impressed
Hi Mick, don't let your creativity be questioned by people who only exist because of numbers and digits, A-chord, C-chord, what the ####, you play from your gut feeling, and that's the only honest approach to this music, you keep up the good work, I'm VERY impressed by all what you've done so far, and don't let anyone tell you anything different. Could you try to answer my -perhaps- boring technical questions, so I can move on up to arranging my future setup? Grtz :)
I play by ear try my best to be accurate but I don't usually try to be technically perfect note for note. I am more interested in practicing production techniques and overall sound and feeling to covering vangelis music.
What model of Behringer mixer are you using? And how do you assign 6 stereo synths to the available 4 stereo channels on the mixer? Or can it be done through the mono-inputs? By the way, I'm not that far away from you: I live in Belgium, just accross the canal. And sometimes, late at night, when we sit in our garden, and the wind is right, I can hear you play... :)
Please explain, that's why I need you for the technical stuff. I'm a simular talented musician as you, but I lack some of the basic hardware facts, so illuminate me with your wizz, please please... :)
Hi, it's a go for launch: My future setup will contain the following: Roland Juno G, Roland Juno 106, Roland Fantom G6, Yamaha SY77 or DX7, and perhaps a Korg TR-series, or a Roland D50. The ESQ1 is very hard to find these days, even on eBay, maybe some day :). Behringer 16ch FX Mixer, all run through a PC with CuBase and a Tascam cdrw900SL. I'm already saving up for it, a childhood dream come true, 36 years from the day I was born. And you made my 'click', and I thank you for it my friend :)
WAAW! Very true to the original piece, yet some minor refinements that make this track still YOUR thing, love it really! I must tell you that I really like what you did with your setup of equipment, and last weekend I introduced my wife to your work because I'm going for a similar setup in the near future, and she was very impressed and told me I should go for my dream, my own little home studio. Thanks for inspiring me and I WILL bother you again with technical questions, keep up this work :)

I never log myself on youtube to send comments but when I see
this kind of response to a nicely done cover I cannot stay quiet.
Your comment is only stupid. First a good music is not necessarily
a complex one, and your comment shoes that you never play a keyboard
in your life. Before doing this video, the man had recorded tracks by tracks
all the score and he also had made or program the sound from each synth
which is a long and difficult task. Try this at your home.
