Federer is never going to get the 2007 level. He's older now, he lost a step and that's normal.
On the other hand, he's the greatest, because he dominated the game for 237 consecutive weeks, then for another 48 weeks, a total of 285 perfect weeks. That's why you can't compare Rafa to him YET...
He was playing so agressive in this tournament and kept points really short. This quick-strike tennis is the key for Federer to be dominant again I think.
@TTFAFF He did in da fifth set but of the things to let him down wen he needed it da most was old faithful da forehand the bh held strong he culdnt make the shots on da FH wen he needed it wen this stat stops den everyone can say fed is done 8 consecutive yrs winning at least a slam but he wins one next year he aint done
Just my very low-level amateur opinion, but the Federer that played at Shanghai, 2007 may very well have been the ultimate tennis player the world has yet seen.
@JiraiyaSama86 Good point. I keep telling them he is the same federer. Back then alot was too scared to play the way they usually play. Federer usually dictate their game and so he look invincible and great most of the time. When playas play him with confidence and take away his game he is nothing more than an average playa. The first playa other than nadal to push him was novak at USO 07. Look what happen the next yr? Novak beat him in 3 easy sets.
I really wish Davydenko could have stayed healthy the last few years. He really is an amazing player when he's on it. Tennis benefits from having the Davydenko that challenged Fed in the AO this year.
bears don't have breakfast? What time does the bear wake up? If the bear is in the forrest, wouldn't he have fish or something for "lunch"? If the bear woke up at 7:30 would that be dinner time, or breakfast? I highly doubt Davydenko has even the slightest idea of how much strength a bear has.
I haven't seen Federer play at this level for a while now, the only time I last remember his serving and shots flowing nicely was in the French open when he won Soderling....
thats because they're somewhat similar in the kind of game they play, which is centered around quick footwork and taking balls on the rise, but federer arguably does it better, not to mention he's got more variety.
so its pretty much the "whatever you do, i can do better" thing between the two, its bound to be a one sided rivalry
Yes, it is true. But Davydenko always had chances to win more sets. Especially in grand slams. I think now Davydenko has more chances, because now Federer isn't that good, as last time they're met.
These days Federer played so fast. His timing was so perfect, His counter shots were so amazing. Every match in 2007 Masters cup except with Gonzo, were true masterpieces.
Davydenko was actually coming up with some sweet shots himself. If he plays like that against the current Federer, he might fair a bit better (possibly even win).
I am not sure it is that! I couldn't hear it clearly. I did hear something, but I am not even sure it's him. Cause it wasn't like that was that big of a point.
He lost the opening match against Gonzo, so he was pretty eager to get back into winning form, and letting Davydenko get points like that is bad play.
@AlphaDraconis7 Even a year ago he was closer to 30..cut the guy some slack..he's won so much and entertained us all...its actually selfish of you to wish he was younger and perfect again....be grateful he was alive during your time instead of whining...I mean hes actually beaten a Nadal in his prime much younger than him..we all age
@SirVetje He is the same federer, it's just that competition has finally catch up to him. All those yrs he was winning was one of the weakest part of the tennis era.
@SirVetje Should be interesting, now that he hired one of pete's coaches. Let see how it work out for him. I am not saying he is not one of the best, he is the best playa of his era. I will give him credit for that. But in this Game there is no goat or greatest of all time. Just simple the best of your time.
@SirVetje being and a net rusher himself he nurtured their s&v games and encourage them to go on da front front and encouraged to consistently chip- charge second serves
@Thutmosis7 well there was Davydenko,Djokovic, Nadal even back then.!! So there's nothing like competition has risen . Nadal dominated the clay and grass court season and i could also say he didn't have any competition right? The world no.1's are always a step above the others
@Thutmosis7 not really they hit harder and belive more in terms of overall game it has fallen thinkthen bck nalby, haas, blake, phillipousisis,, safin, hewitt, gonzo gasquet, kiefer they were all bonafide all court players often looking to end da point at the net wen they culd now at the top ten nw hw bonafide solid all court players do we have in da top ten fed youzhny, nadal, murray djokovic but his volley arent ther eyet do see my point less all court players at the top of men's tennis
So Davydenko can beat all the top players today (except Federer) but he would get destroyed by all the pros from the 90s? Teach us oh wise one, how is this possible?
Davydenko is (was) a very good player. When he is in good shape and at his best, he can beat anybody even Nadal on clay, no doubt about that (Cf Rome 2007 SF).
I know that I compare too much the tennis players of the 2000's and the 90s. Is there one better than the other? I don't know but really I don't see Del Potro for example or Simon in the top ten during the 90's maybe I'm wrong but it's what I think.
roger just angle´s his shots, throws daydenko off and comes in to kill the volley,he´s no fool to trade with davydenko on the baseline constantly,he uses the slice to break the davydenko rythm, roger knows how to play him..
I think he can, but roger is not going to waste energy getting into long rallies with davydenko when he has the chance to come in to kill it with a volley, because that´s what davydenko want´s, long rallies..
davydenko is incredible despite his lost, his shots are so clean, federer is better of course, but you have to admit davydenko knows how to be consistent, he jus doest have a BIG weapon
Well, I agree on everything but the last part, "the big weapon" part. I think his forehand and backhand are great weapons and if he just constructed the points a bit better he would probably win a whole lot more. He can do most of the shots federer can do with the forehand except the crosscourt flicks but other that their forehands are even matched in angle power and speed and yes I totally agree, Davydenko is incredible despite any of his losses.
davydenko's good until the set points come. then he collapses. he's one of the biggest chokers on tour, which is part of the reason he was investigated for gambling.
it seems that davydenko is easily pressured, and doesn't know how to deal with it very well, when he was interviewed by tennis magazine, they asked "Why isn't Davydenko popular?" his response was that he liked it that way and preferred unknown, i'm just using this excerpt to try to support his conflict with [public] pressure
Federer is definately a legend he is one of the greatest of all time he has strong serve devestating forehand nice backhand slice can play from baseline and net
I love how Federer can switch from defense to offense thats how he beats so many players not by baseline net or any others but by technical strategy he becomes a weapon of his own to attack his opponents
davydenko is one of the best tennis player, he lacks a little bit more of ariation but i think he´s awsome, and he could be in the top 3! by the way-- why KOLYA?
many top guys can challenge roger from the baseline, but when roger starts to come to the net, it makes all the difference and he starts to win many points by doing so..
I know, I really don't understand why he doesn't come to net more because he's actually one of the best volleyers in the game right now. I think he could (even more so) completely dominate if he did more serve and volley and came to net more. he seemed to be doing it a lot more than usual at Shanghai and he just completely pummeled pretty much everyone he played.
Davydenko could have a solid record against Federer if his shot selection was more intelligent. If he had the court sense of Nalbandian he would have much more success. He goes to Fed's forehand way to much instead of getting into mainly backhand to backhand rallies where he could win more than 50%.
That's a great observation. And because Davydenko is such a one-dimensional player, there is very little for Federer to be worried about. Everyone Roger Federer has lost to the last few years has either been reasonably comfortable at net (Nalbandian, Fish, Murray) or an extremely good mover (Nadal, Djokovic, also Murray), and Davydenko is neither which poses an additional problem.
actually his movement is great,he´s agile and very quick, but even he says he thinks he´s not strong enough physically,I think he needs serve much better and volley better and more often..when roger starts to rush the net with him,it´s pretty much a done deal..
We finally saw what davydenko was capable of today against Nadal. He hit's cleaner off the ground than anyone in the world except maybe Nalbandian on a good day and Federer's forehand. It's just his shot selection is poor at times and sometimes he needs to pull back a bit. If he upped those two things he'd be a grand slam champion. It's clearly not his strength...did you see the weight of his shots against Nadal. He obliterated him. 2007 French Open against Federer could have easily won.
roger owns nikolay..davydenko lacks resources in his game,he doesn´t use slice like fed and his volleys are weak,he doesn´t come to the net often, his baseline game is one of the best, but it stops there unfortunately..
he's not winning these matches easily, u no. these highlights only show him dominating, but if u watch the whole matach, he has to fight for the win too. its amazing he comes out with end most of the time
It's really interesting to see that Federer's weakness actually seems to come from one place. If you look carefully at a lot of matches you'll see that a backhand down the line fools Federer alot. I don't know why... His footwork and rythm is usually ruined when you do it and then you can attack.
Footwork is perfect :)

needs to improve serve, but his game is similar to federer otherwise
VCHAGZ 3 years ago
well i think generally obvious tht federer is the winner evry match.
lozzybozzy234 3 years ago

diggydog919 3 years ago
davydenko actually did a really good job here.. but 2007 was just federer's year.

many top guys can challenge roger from the baseline, but when roger starts to come to the net, it makes all the difference and he starts to win many points by doing so..
reefric 3 years ago 5
I know, I really don't understand why he doesn't come to net more because he's actually one of the best volleyers in the game right now. I think he could (even more so) completely dominate if he did more serve and volley and came to net more. he seemed to be doing it a lot more than usual at Shanghai and he just completely pummeled pretty much everyone he played.

Davydenko could make no unforced errors and still not beat Federer.
rjamesyork 4 years ago 5
Davydenko could have a solid record against Federer if his shot selection was more intelligent. If he had the court sense of Nalbandian he would have much more success. He goes to Fed's forehand way to much instead of getting into mainly backhand to backhand rallies where he could win more than 50%.
tennis21000 4 years ago
That's a great observation. And because Davydenko is such a one-dimensional player, there is very little for Federer to be worried about. Everyone Roger Federer has lost to the last few years has either been reasonably comfortable at net (Nalbandian, Fish, Murray) or an extremely good mover (Nadal, Djokovic, also Murray), and Davydenko is neither which poses an additional problem.
crazyboarder803 3 years ago
davydenko is a good mover.
truckat123 3 years ago 8
actually his movement is great,he´s agile and very quick, but even he says he thinks he´s not strong enough physically,I think he needs serve much better and volley better and more often..when roger starts to rush the net with him,it´s pretty much a done deal..
reefric 3 years ago 7
We finally saw what davydenko was capable of today against Nadal. He hit's cleaner off the ground than anyone in the world except maybe Nalbandian on a good day and Federer's forehand. It's just his shot selection is poor at times and sometimes he needs to pull back a bit. If he upped those two things he'd be a grand slam champion. It's clearly not his strength...did you see the weight of his shots against Nadal. He obliterated him. 2007 French Open against Federer could have easily won.
tennis21000 3 years ago
what are you talking about, Davydenko is one of the fastest players on tour
pokersuperstar92 3 years ago 5
fernando is faster
disgaeafanatic 3 years ago
completely agree.
pokersuperstar92 3 years ago
roger owns nikolay..davydenko lacks resources in his game,he doesn´t use slice like fed and his volleys are weak,he doesn´t come to the net often, his baseline game is one of the best, but it stops there unfortunately..

During Round robin matches (like this one) the players only need to 2 sets to win. However the final is 3 out of 5 sets
MDG91190 4 years ago
this is not a major tournament that is why they only play 2 games to win.
buddahxboy54 4 years ago
Incredible game. :D
Could someone answer this for me?
Why did Roger only need to win 2 games here? I thought it has to be 3 wins (at the Masters Cup).
AAMLfan 4 years ago
it's only 3 sets in the final

I'm getting bored of Federer winning every match. The same type of opponents and the same Federer.I want some new players to beat him.
nikhil119 4 years ago
he's not winning these matches easily, u no. these highlights only show him dominating, but if u watch the whole matach, he has to fight for the win too. its amazing he comes out with end most of the time
jtag8907 4 years ago
you got your wish !!djokovic just beat him!!i hope you are happy now!!:o)
FedererTKing 4 years ago
o shut up he hasnt got a weakness just face it
lozzybozzy234 4 years ago
It's really interesting to see that Federer's weakness actually seems to come from one place. If you look carefully at a lot of matches you'll see that a backhand down the line fools Federer alot. I don't know why... His footwork and rythm is usually ruined when you do it and then you can attack.
cpark02 4 years ago
if nikolay had a better net game, he could move in and finish off points earlier. he would use less energy trying to finish it from the baseline
