Yeah, now this song is classic, but I'd like to remind, it wasn't in 80s. Many PIL fans despised Warrior for its electro-disco-house beat. Well, almost no one has heard of techno...
Actually a lot of PiL fans hated every album after "Rise" for the same reason you mentioned. "Happy?", "9" and "That What Is Not" all had the same basic style as this. Personally I loved the change of pace...if you go thru PiL's entire catalogue of music you can easily detect 4 distinct styles (most people say 3, but I give "Flowers of Romance" its own category).
@johnnytwice I have to agree with you here, Lydon was to music as the Edsel is to the automotive world, ahead of the times. I remember listening to P.I.L. in the '80's and liking it, but now, in my 30's I dust off the cd's and LP's and listen again, and the music slaps me in the face, almost calling out "dumbass, you listened to me before, but now you are LISTENING to me."
I saw the old man at Coachella and I swear this guy hasn't lost a step. He played at the same time as Jay-Z on the main stage. They made PIL wait until Jay-Z started his set before they could start. Lydon then played a staggeringly energetic clean set that I thought blew everyone else away.
Lordy..Lordy...back when music was great..inventive..rap and hip hop sucks balls..low class..misss the 80's and 90's..at least the music was inventive...
@grzeds I believe it was 1989. This tour was my first concert whne I was 20 (late bloomer sucks being poor) Tickers were 16.50 at Janus Landing in Tamps. Flesh for Lulu opened for them.
For some reason, I don't remember Flesh for Lulu. My mind was elsewhere :) But I was clear when PiL came out. It was all day-glo colors. Tacky, cheezy and wonderful.
@TheDeadlyDelilah I was well drunk when I wrote that, but I reckon 90 percent of techno fans are cunts. I could be wrong, but I've met a lot of cunts, and I've met a lot of techno fans, and a venn diagram would be virtually a circle. Surely you accept that most techno fans would sell their gran for some smack? Visit Newport.
@killforfiend PiL ARE planning, fuck this pathetic new thing of referring to bands as things. I'm fully aware that people self-consciously do it to appear cool, but it is lame. 'The Strokes IS releasing a new album'? No, it's nonsense, stop it NOW.
This may be one of Lydon's greatest Lyrically, and no guitar solo, just McGeoch's riffing all the way thru and the synth build up and the Chorus of Lydon , Great, Pop-Punk Shamans
some very valid comments here... no band could ever come up with a box of energy like Nevermind the Bollocks but PIL is its own thing and quite addictive..
The Sex Pistols were a flash in the pan. Doomed to die a horrid and spectacular death. PIL is the continuation of Lydon's musical skills. As Rollins band is the life after death of Black Flag.
One of the things I've recently figured out is, every time John Lydon came out with ANYTHING different from the Sex Pistols, it was seen as a travesty...a "lower entry"...a "sellout". The thing is, he made HIS music. Whatever HE felt like recording. Isn't that the lesson? That was SUPPOSED to be the lesson the Sex Pistols taught. Just a mere reflection...
I think that P.I.L. are better and better than the Sex Pistols, anyway. Sex Pistols wear the swastikas only to be "against". Sex Pistols sang of anarchy and sold their soul to a fashion. They were important for the music history, but Lydon is great in Public Image Ltd., more adult, more mature.
Wrong...I don't know about all the album tracks, but the singles from Pil circa 85-92 are my favorite Lydon material; This stuff is incredibly imaginative, well-written, and expressive of his aesthetic...Of course small minded hipster critic types don't get it, because they don't see the bigger picture, and that's how Lydon intended it.
It really doesn't take much effort to dig up Lydon's past. It's quite well documented from both his side and from McLaren's side. Much of what he did with PiL was fallout from, it seems, the American tour, as well as the general crap he had to endure under that hackney prat. There's quite a bit to digest, I reckon, but give it a go and you'll have no worries, son.
Just remember that Lydon was an early manifestation of the rare and elusive IRL troll.
Gotta love the tinny, metalic little percussion. So terribly 80's, but these guys make it feel so raw and real instead of poppy and cheap. Amazing stuff!
totally, when i was 15 i hated this because it wasnt never mind the bollocks 2, but now i'm in my 20s & like stuff like the cure, new order etc, and i've come back to PiL and it's kicked me in the balls
I sometimes wonder with John's love for rave, house and other techno music why he didn't explore that genre with PIL other than 'warrior', the greatest hits version that is

For example : Public Image (Theme), Flower of Romance, Poptones, Annalisa, Low Life, Careering, Love Song, This is not a love song, The Order of Death, all the songs from "Album" (Rise, Home, etc.), Seattle, etc.
