  • Makes me proud to be Irish-Up the EMERALDS:)))

  • coooooool..........

  • What a man. The best singer of his generation. RIP Luke Kelly

  • There's many a folk I've talked to, non-Irish, claiming that Irish music made them think they'd been Irish in a former life - if there's such a thing. Celtic music harps strange strings in most of 'us'. Why does Eire touch - so strikingly - people's souls? Is it all about freedom and independence, or has rainy Donegal put a spell on 'us'?

  • Class

  • the best thing about Luke Kelly is he dosent just sing beautifuly its like he tells a story with every song he sings to this day nobody can do that like him he really is 1 of a kind

  • @LiamMurray20 no one like him

  • So yes, I love this song and Luke Kelly and yes this song makes me want to cry ... but I'll admit that I always laugh when I hear "There was music there in the *derrierre*" ... :)

  • @Abhilynn LOL

Try Derry Air, as in the air of Derry, simple enough mistake though given the phrasing in the song and the accent,

    kindest regards patrick

  • @24069500 Yes, yes, of course)) I still hear it, though :)

  • Luke, you live in our hearts.

  • Luke, you live in our hearts.

  • @NancyMcKeonWoW im from southamerica...

  • @sadako36 thats great

  • thank you so much, for all the Irish far from home

  • @pdktrouble the song is the ultimate tribite to irish abroad, i have a cousin aged 25, his father died when he was 18 he is now in Australia about 6 years with a family of his own, just this year his sister went there permanently. I am likely to never see them again...........

  • : )

  • Cold as the wind That carried your ghost. Silent as the songs That remain unsung. Lonely As An Echo From The Jail of Cluain Meala. Solitary As Your Silhouette Going Home By Railings After Closing Time. Upright And defiant As Your Stance When You Challenged The Puppets Of Power "For What Died The Sons Of Roisin!" Like Your Voice... Unweathered By Time This Granite Gravestone. Your Epitaph - A Simple Claim: Between The Two Great Mysteries, Your Place, Your Name. By John Sheahan

  • winniebee + shewitch delighted you both seen to have enjoyed this magic little country of ours.find its heart beat and smile 4 life eh.as 4 this man singing he defines IRISH with every word he spoke or sang as so many before him.a talent that wont be met again

  • hey winniebee we must be sisters coz i feel like wise ,marvelous memories of ireland , they sure know how to have a good laugh and drink a few jars, great going to see my dubliners in plymouth next year for my birthday ,its going to be a dream come true , how welcome you are dubliners and any irish who follow , god bless you all

  • @carlowguy32 our government spent millions of our money on something which in my opinion looks more like a f**kin toothpick then a monument... they're all great for saying we're the country of saints & scribes but the most they've ever done to show how proud they are is name a few streets after a few of them. I know people like shaw & yeats were an unbelievable repesentation for the country, but its guys like christy moore, ronnie drew & luke kelly who should be remebered for their part aswel.

  • carlowguy32 our government spent millions of our money on something which in my opinion looks more like a f**kin toothpick then a monument... they're all great for saying we're the country of saints & scribes but the most they've ever done to show how proud they are is name a few streets after a few of them. • @walshiejames Theres a bridge in Ballybough names after him!

  • There should be an epitaph of Luke with the lyrics of this song somewhere in Derry!

  • this is about respect between people open yr eyes guys guys

  • "They can not forget. But their hearts are set. On tommorow and PEACE once again."

As often, Luke Kelly's words speak for themselves. And I don't think anyone in Eire needs the reminder. I think any semblance of a war that''s still there is fought by scottish fitba fans and americans. Please, just cut it out!

  • this is about derry, not belfast. (Refs to The Fountain, The Creggan, The Moor and The Bog etc etc, not to mention "There was music there, in the Derry air!). Perhaps you were just saying Belfast was the town YOU loved so well, in which case - as a Belfast fella myself - I can totally understand! Slàinte!

  • the town i loce so well is my hometown of belfast. thia song is excellent

  • Luke Kelly is the only artist who always brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart RIP

  • @finnmacaodhain I agree 100% buddy well said ! great man :D

  • One of da greatest singers of dis generation. Along with johnny mcevoy, ray mcareavy, and paddy reilly. Yous boys where untouchable............RIP Luke.

  • the man

  • This man was a legend it was a privilige to have watched him perform live in 1979.

  • @enyrb I reckon it's more singing with passion rather than shouting, powerful stuff!!!!

  • I've been living in Australia for 6 years now, started a family, busy with work and everything else. I rarely get a chance to think of home, but when I listen to this I might as well be sittin in the snug with a prime pint of the black stuff on the little old wooden table in front of me talkin to some stranger. So proud to be Irish, RIP Luke love ye man, thanks for the experience..........

  • where is the statue for luke? its put on the long finger while we pay europe, thats loyalty for you

  • @carlowguy32 I think you are right of course but why do you not start a collection and make the statue from the people. It would mean more. I would contribute.

  • @carlowguy32 heya pal, there is actually a gravestone thing in a place called larkhill in whitehall dublin9 where luke came from its been there since the year after he died, but i agree should be a fuckin statue in place of molly fuckin malone the hoe at the mouth of grafton street, send molly back to moore street lol

  • @carlowguy32 That's bollox, there should have been a statue of Luke before there was one of Phil, politics has fuck all to do with it.

  • @carlowguy32 It could probably be paid for quite easily by the tax U2 are avoiding by basing their company abroad. I'd love a statue/bench for Luke, and Ronnie. If I had the money or if I ever have the money I'll happily pay for it.

  • @carlowguy32 You honestly think a statue for a (magnificent) musician is more important than to be economicaly healthy?

  • There is a plaque in a housing estate green near larkhill school in north dublin dedicated to Luke. Not good enough i know but its there .

  • @carlowguy32 There shouldnt just be one in Ireland. There should be several. And in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, New York...Luke Kelly belongs to the people of the earth, he is within all our hearts. A treasure for us all to cherish and promulgate to everyone.

  • Ah Lukie, there will never be another, who will replace you? God love you

  • The first time I have heard this song I was in Ireland. I was totally lost at once. And from that time a hardcore fan of Luke Kelly en The Dubliners.

    Love from the Netherlands.

  • LOVE THIS SONG AND SINGER

  • im from waterford living in liverpool,,,reminds me of home god bleess home

  • @beckysidblease from waterford aswel, miss it to!

  • PROPPER, IRISH, MAN!!!!! R.I.P. Luke the LEGEND!!!

  • how can 9 people possible dislike this song..what a gifted singer

  • This song brought a tear to me eye. Powerfull, long live Luke

  • nobody but luke gives this song its true justice.

  • Just passed 60 summers, and have been a follower of the Dubliners and Luke Kelly for over 40 of them. This takes me back and is a source of so many memories, some joyous, and some not so. But, it is part of my life, and I would take this recording to my desert island, come what may. Luke Kelly? I would say, the most wonderful voice in folk music, Irish, English, Scottish, or anywhere else, to grace recent years. His voice lives on...

  • just came back from Dublin...my Da went to school with Luke and Im still friends with his Brother. Luke was the best singer Ireland ever had !!!

  • 9 dislikes are you serious!!! Where are you from?!!! Baghdad or just a dirty protestant?!!

  • How proud are you to be Irish when listening to this?

  • @fatnessisrampant im english but wow this man i love so dedicated.. n what a great singer to .!!!.

  • @r6beta5 He is brilliant! :)

  • Golliwogg APPROVES of this song.

  • beautiful music, much better than jedward, beiber or any of those cunts.

  • born and raised in belfast . i grew up on these songs its only when the people that sang these songs to you pass on thats when you cherish them

  • The fuckin' best spent eight minutes in my life!

  • The Voice...no more said... :)

  • @corkonians so true :-)

  • yes. but luke will be remembered for his music long after haughey is remembered for being corrupt.

  • Ireland's shame! I was 12 when Luke died,He died the same time as my Gran and are only a few graves apart and while he had a modest funeral for one of the most talented people this small country ever had ! The like's of charlie haughey get a full state funeral and we had to pay for it !

  • the greatest irish man ever rip luke

  • i have irish blood in me, my great great granddad was irish. i have grown up in england very lost to my feelings as to where i fit in.then i went to ireland 4 times and it hit me i was one of them.the irish are free thinkers, and free spirits.and they can drink have a good time and not get nasty. they also have great storys to tell. i thoght i was in heaven, and i bellive i probley was. bless the irish the place i left my heart.xx

  • GREAT SINGIN, UP THE 32

  • GREAT SINGIN

  • r. i .p LUKE KELLY

  • what pains me is the thought that thought legends of music like sinatra, elvis, pavorrotti, bob marley and mj and many more remembered by billions(and rightly so) but only a mere few million will remember Luke Kelly. As a 16 year old irish person, im sure that if i went up to every teenager on our island , only a handful would be able to talk about Luke like they would all the others! I'm fortunate that I'm not one of these people!

Luke Kelly - May he be forever imoratilized in music!.RIP

  • Kelly, I'm not Irish, but as I've moved all around the U.S. with my career the last 30 years, I've felt longing for my hometown I left so long ago. I've been back a few times, and it's changed so much it's nearly unrecognizable. This song bring tears of both sadness and warmth every time I play it. Thank you so much for posting it.

  • i shared a moment live when Luke sang this song at the leeson lounge dublin, superb.

  • I first heard this song from Paddy Reilly many years ago, and have always loved his versions of it, but this by Luke is brilliant and I'm sure Paddy would agree with me.

  • My mum and dad are both irish and i hope that when i play my children this song they will understand that life is not all about play stations and leapsters and that history and heritage is the most important thing

  • perhaps it's just me, but i feel that luke's voice, like certain wines, is a fine thing, but an acquired taste. i have acquired this taste over the past year or so, and now, like a fine wine, i would pay dearly for that taste. not for everyone, but for those who enjoy it, it is beyond reproach, or compare. dearest luke, we thank you for leaving a legacy we can still enjoy.

  • Luke...Born with the voice of an angel and singing with them now!

Thank you for posting this video. :-)

  • Luke, your singing evokes a huge emotional response but unfortunately one can't go home...even rural Ireland has changed.

    Sinbadog

  • @akgwatts

Every place has changed with the advent of TV and the Internet.. When we become "connected" we loose the cohesiveness of a semi-isolated society and even the structure of the family changes (for better or worse - depending on one's opinion.) It is a bittersweet experience. :-\

  • @BoudiccaBlanc

My thoughts exactly. My mum and i were just speaking of this earlier today, how the old folk no longer feel needed by the young. She nearly put me to tears, knowing i was grouped with the young she spoke of. A change is needed in the young to honor the old, they have been thru more than we could ever understand. Love you mum.

  • Sung as only Luke can!

  • R.I.P Uncle Sonny

  • God bless you Luke, your like will never come again.

  • Kelly i think all your videos are brilliant im irish my dad just passed away a few weeks ago and he always watched your vids of luke he loved this 1 and tank u for making us feel so proud to be irish by never forgetting these great songs tank you

  • @kellyoneill tank u kelly x

  • @kellyoneill where can i get the mp3 of this mate ?

  • @jimi95674 We played this song at my dad's funeral in September. We're not Irish, nor have we any Irish connection, but still my dad loved the Dubliners, we were raised with them and all love their songs. So much emotion in one man's voice, it's incredible.

  • @jimi95674 sorry to hear about your dad, hope he is well and good with the angles :)

  • @jimi95674 my dad was Irish to and always loved this song he would play it for my daughter Erin even if she was just on the phone these videos are gr8 and always make me have happy memories of my dad xx

  • @MrRichardmaclean you're Irish, that's why you like these songs, Your daughters name says it all, I'd like to think you're always gonna be drawn to these tunes

  • @MrRichardmaclean Tank u ever so much

  • @jimi95674 so sorry about your fathers passing!! This was one of my fathers favorites......... the futility of it all ......... I think resonated with him. God bless!!!!! The passing of one whom you love is painful......... I always find peace listening to his favorites!! Especially the original versions!!!

  • @banastrand Tanx lads really lovely comments you have all giving really has lifted my spirits

  • your dad could not have loved a better man :)

  • Great song! I really love it...both playing and listening. It has a success in Moscow. Even when we perform only classical music at our concerts, we always play "The town.."

Some years ago I was asked to play it for Irish Society in Bahrain. I'll never forget that day. It changed a lot in my life. I started playing and teaching Celtic harp:o)

We'll make it to Ireland one day...to see..what we've been playing about for so many years...

I wish Ireland to be HAPPY!

    Elena / "Espressivo harp"

  • Gaahhh, I have serious memories of this song from being a wee girl.

My uncle would always sing it at a family gathering, haha. Not to mention, any road trip with the family, this would feature on the radio a minimum of 3 times.... hahah. I'm only 20, and I sound like an auld wan.

Songs like these make me seriously proud though. Fucking looove it :)

  • I love the song so much and cries a lot when I think of what people have gone through for so many years. Hoping for hatred is burid and eace will come to all the people who need it. God bless Irland

    Sten from Oslo

  • i hate this song .. my ma & da spent hours learning it ... i fuckin hate phil coulter & the dubliners LOL ....

  • @cati64 fuck of so!

  • well said laddie.

  • off the subject

I am American with Irish roots. None of my family has seen Ireland since my grandpa Hogan left during the potato famine to become a farmer in western Maine. I want to return. Are there jobs? Should I learn Irish? Do you hate Americans? What towns or areas have low crime? Where is the most culture? if anyone is listening please help me out.

  • @LuckyLukeHogan ok.... there are very little jobs at the moment, it depends on what you do...

most irish people cant speak irish !!! we dont hate anybody only the english :) and thats even fizzling out now..

cork or dublin... cork was voted number 1 city in the world to visit not so long ago

the culture is everywhere.... and i mean EVERYWHERE !!

visit before you make any big decisions, we're still a few decades behind the states so that might be hard to get used to

  • @proudnorrie correction.... number 6 in the world on lonely planet 2010, still good though :)

  • @LuckyLukeHogan

No jobs here im afraid we are all emigrating once again (google Irelands econmonic situation that should fill you in), we can bearly speak Irish ourselves so dont worry about that, all the small towns have low crime, Most of the crime occurs in Dublin, Limerick and Cork but no more than any city you could visit in the world and there are good areas and bad areas. Alot of the culture is in Galway (It's a great city) many other great places like Donegal, Cork, Kerry, Dublin.

  • @LuckyLukeHogan ++ We dont hate Americans just try not to be annoying. Unlike when your grandfather left we have loads of Potatoes now agus ta a Lan craic anseo so please come and spend your money (100 billion preferably) because we need it .Oh and dont forget to brush up on your hatrid towrards the British if you do you will fit in just fine.(joke)

  • Fuckin Gayyy , this guy doesnt have nything on Justin Bieber <3

  • Luke has that quality of sadness in his voice which is impossible to emulate. He just has it naturally!

  • Luke Kelly is a legend. RIP. Dirty Old Town is a song about Salford, Manchester.

  • shut d fuck up wit all ur bollox. ye dirty old town was about a town in england and luke kelly didnt sing rebel songs im irish i no all bou him he was just a very good irish singer dat wanted te share his voice with d world

  • shut d fuck p wit al ur bollox. ye dirty old town was about a town in england and luke kelly didnt sing rebel songs im irish in all bou him he was just a very good irish singer dat wanted te share his voice with d world

  • Great Song , Best version I,ve heard so far and I,m only 53!!!!!! Magic Hail! Hail!

  • This is a most beautiful version..by the beautiful Lukie..I don't know this specific version. Where did you get this??

  • My God, his voice! It sooths me and shakes me to my core. Exquisite.

  • 7 fekking idiots voted this down, I suspect they are deaf. Or just ignorant about REAL MUSIC.

  • I hate to burst a few bubbles here but this song was originally wrote about Manchester, sorry lads, we might of accepted as one of our own and well we should because Luke made it ours.....x

  • @Gugglers182... So when Luke sings about “The Creggan, The Moor and The Bog”(side) and …”there was music there in the Derry air” he’s talking about Manchester, you reckon? You sure you're not trying to start an argument, just for the sake of it?

  • @Gugglers182 Get your facts right, Phil Coulter wrote it about Derry. I don't remember any saracens rumbling through the streets of Manchester in the 70s much less any soldiers installed in the cop shops or barb wired barriers.

    Erin11246

  • @DeeMcK07

wait! theres some eejit who thinks this was written about Manchester?! oh jesus.....

  • @Gugglers182 I researched it and found alot that the writer,Phil Coulter, had to say about growing up in Derry.Cant find anything about Manchester while he was growing up.So unless you can provide some level of fact I will continue to believe its about the town he loved so well,Derry.

  • @Gugglers182 i think you may be gettin mixed up wi dirty old town which many think is about dublin but was infact about salford , manchester

  • @Gugglers182 Really? Where on earth did you hear that nonsense?

  • @Gugglers182 ur wrong dere buddie, dirty ol town was about manchester, salford i think, not this song

  • @burkepa ur rite ther buddy! so many dnt actually know!

  • look at that shirt!! breath takeing song

  • So much passion and so much love. That is all I want to say.

  • When I think of the crowd of shites that have wrecked this country, it helps to listen to Luke, he reminds me that being Irish is something to be proud about.

  • @jimheron007 here here.

  • Hey lets not talk about religion and hatred... Lets Just enjoy the soothing sound of Luke Kelly and appreciate his Genius!

  • 1 word!! EPIC

  • From a English Catholic I love my Irish roots and is sympathetic to the one Free state for Ireland. I also love Britain including the men from the north of Ireland that died in there thousands at Thiepval and many other places, braver than the brave. Men who gave their all, boys loyal & true. There must be some way we can have peace and respect for each other (Shoulder to Shoulder all Irish men Green & Orange. Beat the world not each other!!! Happy Christmas. A fresh start for all. God Bless

  • He is the best, after al these year I still miss him
