  • Dont think you would get that kind of frankness from Don Henley!...he is a great lyricist and musician, but comes across as having an ego the size of Texas. You would think that being

given a fabulous talent for music would be enough, so credit to Don Felder for telling it like it was.

  • Does this guy have a solid head on his shoulders on what , holy smokes, fingers felder

  • Great stuff!

  • Full credit to Don Felder for being able to take responsibility for his part - I wonder if the others can be that frank about themselves? Thank you for the great music Don - your songs are a big part of me taking up guitar.

  • I watched this whole video very cool interview...

  • His book is one of my favorites. Great guy.

  • Good for you Don

  • saw him last night, best concert ive ever seen

  • Simply a Musical genious. The best ever concidered the guitar skills in addition to arrangments and texts.

  • A gentleman, a true talent and seemingly a cool guy. My hat is off to you Don Felder.

  • 5 DISLIKES, WTF WITH THE PEOPLES?

  • Wow, he seemed truly open and honest here, which a lot of celebrities are more guarded when speaking of such things.

  • The eagles didn't make hotel california, Don Felder fucking did.

  • Aguem por favor poderia traduzir este video pra o brigado

  • integrity, honesty and class...... pity henley and frey never had any of it.. great man, tremendous talent.

  • Loved your book"heaven and Hell", your honesty and skill is appreciated by this dude.

  • Wow! we're getting old aren't we Don?

  • It was when Felder joined the Eagles that I started liking them. When Walsh joined them I thought all my dreams had come true. But too bad that Henley and Frey turned out to be such huge assholes. The Eagles are just a corporate sellout now mining the memories and ripping off their fans.

  • Don was good but he was not in the Eagles from the start

  • @paulbran100 He joined in 74, Purty close to the start I would say.

  • @MrTenitis Don't talk Crap sport .Don did not play on the first 2 albums and only on 2 songs on the third. On the greatest hits he only played on 5 of the 10 songs.

  • @paulbran100 Whatever is your problem. I wasn't saying you were wrong, just saying he's been with them for a long time. Did I say you were wrong? What are you so touchy for?

  • @paulbran100 Let's not start. I really don't want to argue with you or anybody else.

  • This man was Tom Petty's guitar teacher!

  • What an intelligent and honest man Don Felder is! Good luck Don.

  • This guy seems so delicate, hie way of talking is very articulate, just like his guitar solos....

  • Not the biggest EAGLES fan, but the Don Felder tracks from the HEAVY METAL Soundtrack, are essential listening. Right you are Dave, he did wonders to the EAGLES sound. -jeff metal-

  • Such a gent.. And just speaks dictfully, he's never stuck for an answer or mumbling..

  • The Eagles, as a whole, are what made the band...Everyone trys to give credit to certain ones, but Timothy Schmidt, and Joe Walsh did alot as well.

  • ...and let's not forget so many songs by the greatest band ever the Beatles...

  • takin a ride!

  • Felder is just one cool cat....my favorite guitarist of all time. Not real flashy, but extremely talented and enormously tasteful. Not to mention an accomplished golfer also.

  • Felder's book is fascinating. If half what he says about Henley and Frey is true - well the Eagles must have been a pretty toxic place to be. Interesting too how their post Felder album was so incredibly weak.

  • kirbygene, I watched the 60 MINUTES interview and know for a fact that the only reason they agreed to do the inteview (with Steve Kroft) was because they put parameters on what they were going to discuss. DON FELDER, was never mentioned in the interview (nor were Bernie Leadon or Randy Meisner). It would be pretty hard for Don Henley and Glenn Frey to admit they were such assholes to their former band members. watch the interview and see how much Henley and Frey STILL don't like each other.

  • cuzz7133, you nailed it. He wrote the music for (what turned about to be called Hotel California). Don Henley liked it and referred to it as the MEXICAN BOLERO song. He basically wrote the lyrics for it (which are truly amazing) but with no musical creation from Don Felder, this song wouldn't exist.

  • notsolonesomeDave and kamaboko1, I agree with you both completely. Its a shame how he was fired from the band. His book HEAVEN AND HELL is a really interesting read. Without him, they are not the SAME band.

  • Yeah....seems like all we ever hear about are the members of the Eagles since Mr. Felder left the group. But he was one of the originals AND his work is what I always recognize as classic. Awesome musician and person.

  • My message got cut off. Felder plays VOL with a really ballsy Strat. I could not believe it was a Strat: It has Lace sensor pickups and sounds like a Les Paul Standard. BTW, Nice D-35

  • Sorry, but the reality is that The Eagles can go on without Felder. Without Don Henley The Eagles can not go on. What is that litttle saying: Don Henley and a back-up band! Henley and Frey's contribuition to the group is/ was much greater than Felder"s -- musically and busines wise. Felder is a nice guy and talented guitar player. However, would we ever have a Hotel California without Henley's lyrics? I don't think so!!!

  • @PetiteGateau1 Would he ever have a Hotel California without Henley lyrics??? Are you 4 real??? If it wasn't for him, there woudn't be no such thing as a HOTEL CALIFORNIA!!!

HOTEL CALIFORNIA put Eagles on the Map.. Not Don Henley or Glenn Frye..

  • @cuzz7133 The bestselling album of "ALL TIME" was the Eagles album Greatest Hits. With all due respect, I love Hotel California but them guys were already on the map. I know it was just a greatest hits album but think about it, The greatest selling album of all time.

  • @MrTenitis You don't know what your talking about their greatest hits was not the biggest selling album of all time, not even in the top five you idiot

  • Comment removed

  • @MrTenitis Sticks and stones............

  • @paulbran100 I've re-checked and I'll have to concede that you are right even though the sources of my information contradicted themselves. I said what I said in good faith and I really thought I was right. Still, the lowest listing I can find still puts them at 6. You didn't have to call me names for me to admit that. All you had to do was say I might be wrong. Lighten up. I have nothing against you. Can we agree that they were definitely on the musical map before Hotel California?

  • @MrTenitis That was my only real point.

  • @MrTenitis I see your Gobben off on here now I dont know who is worse you or unravelled1962. You dont seem to know much about music. Did you know that Felder took this riff from an old Jethro Tull song called (we used to know)

  • @pinfolder no i didn't know that. I really like Jethro Tull too. I don't know that much about popular music but I thought I was right. I admitted I was wrong so let that be an end to it.

  • @pinfolder I just listened to that Jethro Tull song and you might be right, they sound very similar. Look I don't pretend to know everything about Rock and popular music. I just know what I like and don't like. Why can't we just leave it at that. I take it you don't like Gary Moore and I do. So what! the worlds not gonna quit turning cause we disagree. Peace Out!

  • @pinfolder Just drop it, you two are acting like a couple of fags.

Your like and dislike for music doesn't mean shit to any one but yourselves.

If this is such a huge deal for the both of you than set up a meeting and go fuck each other up the ass.

You're both acting like little school girls.

  • @unionofonion What the hell are you on about I only made one comment on this video you must be mistaking me for someone else.

  • @paulbran100 I have to admit I'm eating Crow. Kinda taste like Chicken. If you don't know what eating crow is in America it means I got to eat my words. That's why I removed my last comment. Music should be bringing the world closer together not drive us apart. Peace.

  • @MrTenitis Let it rest. I don't care who you guys like or dislike. Everybody has different taste. That's what makes us individuals. I,m not arguing with you anymore.

  • @PetiteGateau1 :Just finished Don's book. Recommend it highly. You are right, The Eagles without Henley would never have been The Eagles. His brilliant lyrics and incredible voice are essential, and Felder would be the first to admit it. But your statement is wrong--The Eagles would not have been the same, not even close, without Felder. He wrote the music to Hotel California-music that inspired Henley, and other songs. Even Frey, in an unguarded moment alone with Felder, tells him that.

  • GREAT guy...

  • What an agreeable person.

  • This amazing man..is the reason the music is so good..and the book is the worlds treasure...

  • Don Felder is my guitar hero. I have his book which he autographed for me. Just a really nice, pleasant, down to earth guy. Watch him in any video, even in The Eagles. He's always smiling. That's him...

  • Don is a class act :)

  • I saw the eagles at Patriots Stadium, they sucked. It was like a very bad Joe Walsh show. Everything sounded like the James gang, and most of the show he wandered around the stage. I’m sure somewhere, some village somewhere, is missing its Idiot. The guy on lead guitar missed so many licks it was sad. The band was over when Bernie Leadon left and Joe Walsh joined.Don Felder added the finesse that Glen Frey just doesn’t possess; and he is only an average rhythm guitar player, at that.

  • I agree....

  • @GearingDestroyer wow that is so negative and not true the eagles are good both was, u obiously dont like the rock type of eagles then

  • @zosojplp fuck you

  • I have to admit as much as I like the Eagles Don Henly and Glen Frey really tried to Screw Don Felder, he is a classy guy no bitterness and still compliments Henly's writing ability. True artist with a lot of class!

  • In interviews Henley and Frey seem more uptight than Felder. Felder seems more human. Something tells me Leadon, Meisner, and Felder were the more decent elements of this band though they didn't get the spotlight or chance to express their music like Henley and Felder did. Henley sings five of the eight songs on Hotel California, and it hurts the album. If the other band members were given a chance that album would have been even bigger, and not possessed that flaw.

  • This Summer I saw both The Don Felder Band @ The M Resort in Vegas & a month later Saw The Eagles @ The MGM & in my opinion, beside the familiar voices The Felder Band Kicked ASS !!!

  • But felder is the worst because he is such a pussy. The whole book he cries about how poorly he was treated for years out on the road and in the studio but everytime it was time to record/tour he was the first to pack and leave his family. The guy was never home, did drugs and cheated on his wife and then writes a fuckin' chapter wondering how his wife could've left him. Fuck him and his inferiority complex. Fucker cried for 300 pages. If the eagles called tonight he'd be out there w/them in 1hr

  • There weren't any good guys in the eagles. They were all flawed in someway. Frey and Henley were/are cocksuckers, Walsh is a spineless coward who wouldn't stick up for Felder when the shit hit the fan because he didn't want to lose the dream job that kept him in booze/coke.

  • Frey & Henley screwed Bernie Leadon & Randy Meisner. Fortunately, Don Felder - not so much; though not from lack of trying. I'd like to see a Felder, Leadon, Meisner project. Call it "Broken Eagles" perhaps.

  • To me, Frey is far more of a cunt than Henley. Don't get me wrong, Henley is still a cunt, just not on the same scale. Walsh I don't know about - he's kind of a silent partner type.

  • This guy must be quite a bit older than me but looks great he must have got things right in his life.

  • #

Hunkola , read the book and you will hate Henley/ Frey even more.

  • Seems like a sincere and honest guy. And what a great musician.

  • what a champion bloke not a bit of ego in him

  • sweet video. The truth about Hotel California!!!

  • Thank you Don Felder for one the most beautiful pieces of musis ever and for being so humble

  • Those of you who have read the book - is it worth buying??

  • @Lmid56 Yes,very well worth buying and very well written!

  • I beleive this Don (not Henley ) is a fine musician especially if he taught Tom Petty to play guitar, hotel cali is definately one of my favs- it's too bad bands like the eagles and beatles have to part ways and tragedies happen to them like plane crashes shootings etc.Glad he got some cash though.

  • I love how he still remains objective and open with regard to talking about his time in the eagles. Frey and Henley lack honesty. So much so, they refuse to talk about the other former members in context what so ever. Rock on Mr Felder

  • @brushee hey bro its because the fella is pure class.

  • It's sad the creed surrounded of Geffen, Henley and Frey. why they don't recognize Felder has the right of royalties cause he's part of The Eagle corp.?

  • Felder was always my favorite of the Eagles. The band has never been the same without him.

  • Felder was pushed out the Eagles over money, he was an equal partner and Henley and Frey wanted him to take less money to remain in the band, he refused and was out, but not before they had to pay him a boat load of money.

  • I wish I could get guitar lessons for Don Felder.

  • Don Felder is one of my favorite gutarists of all time.

  • When the Eagles play 'Hotel California' onstage these days and the crowd roars approval, do you think without Don there playing, they feel just a little like thieves?

  • Ha! Desperado, the signature song from Eagles? Bullshit? Without Hotel California they would be another Foreigner or Journey, popular with their hardcore fans but mostly forgotten.

Felder gave them a song comparable to Stairway To Heaven, the song they will be remembered for.

  • @ShadowOfTheWave

Hmmmm . Eagles greatest hits has sold over

31 million copies and was the best selling

album of all time until Michael Jackson's premature

death. Hardly a group that is "mostly forgotten"

  • I don't really understand your comment. I stated that without Hotel California they quote 'would be' forgotten.

And before you note that Hotel Califoria is not on that compilation, consider that the albums preceding it have sold less than half of it.

Sales of original material without Felder: 16 million

    Hotel California: 16 million

    You see how that works?

    And let's look at this:

Sales of original material with Felder: 31 million. Counting live only albums: 38 million.

  • After you watch this interview watch Henley & Frey on 60 Minutes.

With Felder you have an open honest person who is even able to compliment someone who hurt him badly (Henley).

In Frey and Henley you have 2 very smug men who have learned nothing of emotional growth in 30 plus years.

  • what an honest man. thanks for posting this.

  • Felder comes across as such a nice guy.

  • Don Felder is epic.

  • I really wonder if Frey & Henley would compliment Felder on his writing/playing like Felder compliments Henley on his writing abilities...

  • Didn't Felder write/sing Victim of Love?

  • HI I LIKE PIE

  • The music business is that.....a business like any other. If you go into a partnership with a group of people, you are entitled to your percentage of the profits (if there are any) and losses. We know what kind of money these guys were raking in. It's always fun in the beginning. Then the money starts rolling in and that's when problems start. I don't care if Felder never wrote or sang a single song, by law he was entitled to his share and they tried to screw him. Good for you Don!!

  • @jamesskb Contracts are contracts.

A lot of people try to skimp out on it, fuck people that do that.

  • He seems like a pretty good guy...

  • without Hotel California.. I don't even know who is Eagles.. and a lot of peoples around the world will be the same like me...

  • The Eagles would not be the same without the song Hotel California.

  • Without Felder the Eagles new music sucks. Maybe he had more to do with the music than "The Gods" would have us belive.

  • @notsolonesomeDave You are absolutely right. Don Felder is totally underrated.

  • Your correct, hard book to put down. The Eagles are not to good without this man.last record was no good..No Felder,no good.

  • i can tell by the look in dons eye that he has found inner peace .he seems very humblw to me. i have not read his book but am on my way to the book store now to buy it .i am very interested in hearing what this man has to say.i love his guitar work heavy metal soundtrack stays in my cd player.great interview.

  • This is a wonderful interview! I always liked Felder's sound.

Very nice looking guy as well! WOOT

  • One thing's for sure, you'll never watch a video of Stuart Smith discussing how he played Don Felder's guitar parts at an Eagles Farewell gig.

  • No wrong... lyngoodwin...Fedler wrote all of

Hotel California minus the lyrics. Without his contribution, the song is never born. Without his solos like, on "one of these nights", for example. the Eagles don't reach the heights they did. His solos were incredible sexy and tasty. Stuart Smith plays Felder's solos. What did Stuart create? He is a no trick pony.

  • Well anymajordude5 , we will have to agree to disagree. AS stated, " I always like Felder" He does not claim what YOU claim in HIS book ???? Reading between the lines on what YOU say, the rest of the Eagles are "one trick ponies" and lost without Felder ? I dont think so !!!!!

  • Lyngoodwin-

Felder was not a "one trick pony".

He joined late in the recording of the"On The Border" album, where he brought "Already Gone" ALIVE with his guitar riffs and leads and his slide on "Good Day In Hell".

On "One Of These Nights" LP he arranged all of the clever opening music of the title song, including the bassline. All of it.

On "Hotel California" he co-wrote the title song and "Victim Of Love"

On "Long Run" LP he co-wrote "Disco Strangler" & "Those Shoes"

  • Yes kirbygene, ALL that in so many years as a member of the Eagles, really pushed the boat out didn't he ???

  • lyngoodwin-- I was just pointing out that Felder is not a "one trick pony" He was an important part of the Eagles. As important as Frey or Henley? of course not. But important for more than just Hotel California. It's fine with me if you want to minimize his importance. It just seemed slightly innaccurate to me.

  • @kirbygene Hi kirbygene, it may come as a surprise but I am a fan of Don Felders. He is a very pleasant guy and a great guitarist. No one person is bigger than the Eagles, even the "Gods" My angles remains, he is/was the least important of the present Eagles line up. I would be made up if he could have success in his own right, but as I have said (in my opinion) he needs to move on and forget the guys who sacked him.
  • @lyngoodwin-- You actually think Timothy B Schmidt brought more to the Eagles sound than Felder? He only arrived for "The Long Run" and mimicks Meisner's role. I don't dislike him, but to put him above Felder in terms of importance to the Eagles is sort of silly.

  • @kirbygene

Well Kirkbygene, What I actually think ,"sily"

or not, the proof lies in the pudding.Timmy B

is still with the Eagles whilst Don F is not.

AND Tim sings like an Angel Whereas Don F

sings questionably, I even bought one of his

own CD, played it once !

  • @lyngoodwin - sorry if the use of the wors "silly" sounded disrespectful. I thought it was mild compared to language I see here on YouTube. In the big pictureof life, I know some of this is just our opinions. You actually did more than I did-- bought a Felder CD, lol

  • @kirbygene

No Problem kirbygene and no offence taken !

Don's CD entitled "Airborne" sadly instantly

    forgettable ! Best wishes LG.

  • Comment removed

  • anymajordude-- meant to give you "thmbs up" clicked the wrong dang icon...

  • @lyngoodwin

Like it or not, he wrote the "signature" song for the Eagles. He put the Eagles on the map.

  • Not even sure I agree with it being "the" signature tune, Desperado could arguably lay claim to that title. The Hotel California album was the penultimate album before the 14 years break. They had several albums and many hit records before California, the Eagles were well and truly iconic before California.

  • @kamaboko1 He wrote all the music but not the lyrics. Henley wrote the lyrics with help from Frey, that's why all 3 are credited. The lyrics to that song are some of the greatest lyrics ever written & they could not possibly have fit the music any better. Take a great tune & add weak lyrics to it & you will severely handicap its potential. "Hotel California" is a rare case of a song written as art becoming wildly popular, in the same way as "Stairway to Heaven," & "Dust in the Wind."

  • Getting quite a bit of heat for my comments about Don. I rate Don Felder very highly and he was a wonderful presence for so long in the Eagles. Simply, his contribution was not as great as Glenn, Don H, Joe or Timothy B. Surely, no Eagles fan can dispute that ? I wanted to make the point that HE should get over it, Don Felder will not go forward if he keeps looking back. In fact Don, write a song on that theme and play your wonderful guitar solo and have a hit !!!!

  • I just got Don's book last week from my best friend (an early Christmas present) and it has to be the best book i've ever read

  • @theeaglesfan1 It really is, i got it a few days before christmas and couldnt put it down until the whole book was finished.

  • What a jolly nice man.

  • It must be an awesome feeling to write and play a song that moves a listener emotionally. What a player Felder is. He's definitely one of those guitarists that seems to make it sound effortless. On a related topic, the book, "Heaven and Hell..." is a great read. Also, his in-studio interview on the Howard Stern show as great and inspired me to buy the book.

  • Don Felder is A great guitar player..

  • don felder the best

  • Don Felder was the sound of the Eagles. His unique talent can't be replaced by trumpet players, mariachi bands or less capable guitarists. When the "new" Eagles come to a Don Felder part they should all just stop playing stand there in silence to ponder their loss (and ours).

  • @douggie2238 I agree! randy meisner and bernie leadon are the other two that were key elements to that band but felder gave them more of a edge and hotel california was the transition to the walsh/felder sound. Go listen to felder's "takin a ride" or "all of you" from the heavy metal movie soundtrack or most of walsh's solo work that's proof there that those two were the sound of that group from 1976-up

  • He just seems like a real nice guy, and down to earth, not arrogant at all.

  • Amazing man and guitarist. I just love his "I Can't Tell You Why" guitar solo. He is such a fine guitar artist, the manner he composed notes in every eagles song is just a power beyond imaginable. Just listening to this and some of his interviews makes me see his humility and honesty; and I see that he is a happy man. The Eagles today is no longer delightful not having Don Felder with them anymore. Don Felder is my favorite of them all. God bless you Don and may you make more good songs.

  • just another guitar virtuoso

the eagles together including MEISNER & felder r unbeatable

  • I'd go too =)

  • Class act, indeed.

  • my favorite eagle.

  • Don thanks for all the time and life you've contributed to the world of music. I'll never go to an Eagles concert or buy an album without your talent included. No sir, no Don Felder NO eagles.

  • Class Act

  • I just finished the book and I am so sorry that I have paid so much $for their concerts supporting "the Gods" Frey and Henley. They don't deserve a penny from me. Don, they will never be the same without you and I'll never go so the Eagles again unless you play with them. Thanks for sharing your life with us.

  • Still my favorite Eagles. A very inspiring guitarist for me. He even gives credits to Henley in this interview, dispite Henley never mentions him anymore! Really an honest guy

  • It is really a shame I think that Don Felder is not in The Eagles no more. I love The Eagles and their music, but it never sounded completely the same no more since Don Felder is gone.

  • Don should call up Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner and form a new band. Get Joe Vitale to play drums, Jackson Browne and JD Souther could make guest appearences....I'd be first in line to see that show.

  • I'll be right behind you =)

  • I'll be right after you =)

  • I just saw this. Felder is one pure, humble, honest guy without the usual PR pish spouting out of his mouth. A pleasure to listen to. Funny thing is I'm playing in a tribute band call "hotel California" and before I joined the guys played one gig with Felder and they said he was brilliant but still very demanding.

I respect him a lot more after this.

  • cool guy!

  • hahaha i thought this was gonna be a sabbath cover

  • No LYIN EYES there Mr Frey!

  • Book is good.

  • Taught "little Tommy Petty." Awesome! GREAT interview! Henley sounds like the real ass and he plays the drums like his arms are frozen stiff. It aint the Eagles without Felder. He is a class act all the way.

  • Don has such a sweet smile

  • Felder you are truly a class act. You get it (what life is all about) I appreciate you honesty about everything and the fact you seek the positives in most things around you. When I think of the Eagles, I think of you, your guitar talent and the incredible song you wrote. Hotel California defines the Eagles and no one can take that away from you!

  • Felder and Walsh were the backbone of The Eagles. Henley and Frey may have been the showmen but the humbleness and guitar skills of Felder makes him my favorite Eagle member.

  • Yeah And I think Randy's voice complimented the band as well

  • Felder a truly CLASS Act.

  • It's pretty obvious that Don Henly and Glenn Frey are the two biggest egomaniac assholes in rock after what they did to Felder.......he was just as responsible for the Eagles' phenomenal success in the 70's as Henley/Frey and he deserves just as much of the profits.......for fuck's sake, he wrote "Hotel California" --- still regarded as the greatest rock song of all time (maybe tied with Stairway to Heaven?).

FUCK YOU, HENLEY & FREY, YOU GREEDY CUNTS.........DON FELDER RULES YOU BITCHES !!!!

  • @Hunkola I can't stand it when people use the comment section to go on a swearing tirade while hiding behind their computor. But in this case...WELL SAID!

  • Don Felder and his guitar: great !

  • cool guy

  • Good interview, thx for posting, seems like a well grounded very thoughtful guy (sometimes it seems you have to get out of the "machine" in order to have a normal life)

  • They look bored now without Felder.Fry and Henley shouldn't have been greedy pricks.

  • Excelent, i was finding hevy metal, and this song is marvelous, i love this genre.

  • The Eagles, with Don Felder 1974-2001, were far better then, then the present edition which are a shadow of their former selves.

  • Yeah whats with this country sounding crap on their newest album.

  • yeah I know..Go figure..Felder an X eagles member..doing that Country sounding crap.. I don't get the connection at all...

  • Well the album debuted as number one in 7 countries. I hit the wrong button I mean't 2 number one chart singles. How Long and I Dream their was no war, won them 2 Grammy's. I enjoy Felder's playing, but he was not the Eagles, and they still sell out fast. BTW, I like their new album, I'm a Joe fan so my favorite is Guilty of the Crime, but the whole album is great.

  • Without Don Felder the Eagles are just a worthless cover band of their former selves.

  • Yeah that's exactly it, their new album only became 7 times platinum with 4 number one singles out of it. That's also why they are one of the best selling bands in the world.

  • I know it sold 7+mil copies but even that doesn't mean what it meant in the past - that was only good enough for the number 3 spot for the year. As for the four number one singles, you either need to look at the right charts or find some better drugs to take. You are completely out of your mind with that one! (By the way, the AC chart doesn't co
