I don't mind product placement. It's that or more expensive comics, after all. And I think it would be kinda cool if Pepper Potts was an actual pepper. ;-p
I would like to know what you guys think of hollywood diluting original comic book source in movies? For example, Wanted by Mark Millar is coming out this summer but all the superhero stuff has been taken out of the narrative so I think it's going to be a lot less interesting to me. Are there any movies from comics that you think have worked well but deviated from original source material? and what movie would you like to see be made from a comic that isn't necessarily a super hero title.
I think product advertisement is okay as long as they put the right ads in the right comics. For instance: guns and ammo ad in punisher, orange county choppers in ghostrider, join the military in superman, dove body lotion in she-hulk, raid anti-bug spray in spiderman, and such.
As long as the product is woven into the story in an unobtrusive or ,at least, a clever and entertaining way I have no problem with it. If it keeps the flippin' prices down, put the 7 Up logo on Superman's chest for a splash page for all I care.
Hey guys! I just found your show and I've been going through your episodes and loved every minute! Just subscribed to to itunes feed as well. I'm looking forward to more shows! You rock! :)
If it's done right, procudt placement isn't all that terrible. At least Guitar Hero 3 is something I might be interested in buying, unlike a 4 wheel drive car! What average comic book buyer has enough cash to buy a new car? Really, it's just stupid. Video games, however, are target appropriate and because of this, are not so annoying.
I liked the Ultraverse, and I'm glad to see a return, but I also miss the old Malibu Titles like Gravestone and the Protectors.
Product Placement: Sometimes it makes me feel like the heroes live in a real world. And I LOVED the David Letterman issue of the Avengers. If it's funny or subtle, I don't care.
I also see a lot of references to superheroes having sponsors, like Capt Amazing in "Mystery Men" or Booster Gold had.
That Mountain Dew Machine DID take me out of the movie. Product placement is only usually used in the kid-loving, nobody-is-buying books, so I dont usually see them. The ads on the out-of-story pages are okay... you have to do what you have to do for money... But you'd think that at $3 a book, they'd have enough money by now!
I want to see product placement so sarcastic and out there I want to see Jarvis holding up Old Spice and Iron Man nodding and then them going back to the story and I want dialouge about how great Old Spice is. I want Hulk beating on a tank yelling GOTT MILLKKKK?!?! And is Coke a sponsor? Cuz everytime they show Times Square it has that red line but never says coca cola. God Marvel is so goffy. Jesus.
What if characters have a Tarantino-esque kind of discussion about a product/film/book? That could be cool if done well(awful if not, of course) and could even make the characters seem more human, the 'we share an interest' thing Justin mentioned...
An example of product placement done really badly (or brilliantly if your products featured) is 'The Island' (Ewan McGregor & Scarlet Johanson). The movie was pretty much a feature length advertising board.
Still, I would rather have badly done product placement with less adverts because that should lead to more story & therefore better value for loot... or so I hope. Unless it's too ostentatious, I'll probably miss it all anyway.
Check out our website, popcultureshock dot com slash cbclub... We're posting audio of it every week; usually on Tuesdays, now (the show from the previous week).
Product placement sucks, I'll admit that. But I think it is just something we have to get used to. Gotta agree with the funny wired guy, in some movies it is bad noticable, and i some it isn't. Ever see demolition man? With taco bell? =P Best product placement ad ever. ^_^
How about Logan...not a fan of the Logan 3 issh mini series? Don't you guys think that the worst thing that they did was give Wolverine a Name and a past...booo!
Yep. If she has sucked in her clothes, it makes me wonder what else she's sucking in... Many a funny reaction would be had were it to emerge Mystique was born male.
product placement is pretty shit, having peter parker posing in a pair of Nikes just makes the portrait fucking lame and tacky.

On the cover of Wolverine 64, did anyone else notice that the rifle that Mystique is holding is a paintball gun?

If the transformers movie wasn't bad enough they threw Mountain Dew, Xbox, and Nokia robots in it! FOR NO REASON!

Product placement is a necessary evil. Just like naming rights on sports arenas, if it helps the comic companies make better comics I'm all for it.
Oh, and Last Defenders has absolutely no redeeming qualities, and Justin is wrong about the final page of Wolverine.

Mystique is one of the more sexier characters... But having a full spread of her in Wolverine comes off as sort of awkward.
