This plaintive love ballad was one of Pat Boone's more intimate tales of romantic longing, the type of sad wistful song that one might expect from Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison or Vince Gill. Boone delivers it with a tender grace that invites the listener into his lonely, uncertain relationship with empathy, & mercy for his plight. This, "Moody River," & "Love Letters in the Sand," are perhaps Pat Boone's most memorable entries into pop recording's crowded field of musical pathos. Nicely done.
I just heard the Orioles now & to be honest I would grant that it's the better version - but only in the sense that Dolly Parton's original version of "I Will Always Love You" is better than Whitney Houston's (I honestly think it is though Whitney is the better singer). You see w/ Whitney's version you become more aware of the singer not the song - likewise w/ Pat's version of the song in question. W/ Dolly's it is the song that gets you not so much the singer - likewise w/ the Orioles'.
@Gunfighter200077 I think anyone with even a rudimentary knowledge of 50s music has heard of Sonny Til and the Orioles.Their recording of Crying in the Chapel was number one for over a month years before Elvis recorded it.
Many thanks me cheeky, chirpy ol' cockney of Old Texas Town. Good to have the first comment on this one after 10 months. My.... that opening piano's just so nice.

@WALRU11 Thanks for the thoughtful comment. Certainly the opening bars are reminiscent of Elvis's "Soldier Boy".
