I'd like to expand on the initial example and say it's even simpler to understand if it's 0 + 5 - 2 = 3 and 0 - 2- 5 = 7 because that way there is some 'origin'.
You could think of subtracting a negative number like -(-7) as subtracting a debt which would save you that amount owed. Like if you owed $7 and you were ,all of a sudden, forgiven that debt you would save $7.
jsellers the equation is two minus negative five not two minus positive 5. so if u minus a negative you get the opposite, whitch would be the same as adding that number.
I was with you early on, and the number line thing was great, but the part the lost me was the 2 - +5 = 7. I try to use that number line to solve that and I get lost. If I have 2 in my bank account and I take out 5. I will over draw by 3. so -3 make more sence to me. Thats the part I need help with.
Unfortunately, you are like most maths teachers; you are fine at the beginning but when it becomes complicated you speed up things and it is too difficult to understand!
haha you're right, i did say -10. Good catch... I do a lot of this for some reason, i think there is some kind of short circuit between what i say and what i write... i should get that looked at at some point :)
Vat Vould Freud say about that? "How long have you been denying the positive quality of numbers, Maybe your mother was an Acoustician and only related Integers as secondary to the fundamental causing a deep rift that can only be expressed through negative slips in the number line. :-) PS; Love the website keep fighting the "Bread and Circuses".
of course Wilhelm Reich would probably just say that it's part of my character structure and all i need is a few minutes in an orgone accumulator... And I would definitely take Reich's recommendations over Freud's any day :)
cool magic, i'll have to look into him further. Here is a quote from wiki which will tell you how important Reich is ... "Christopher Hyatt's interest in the occult began in his early twenties. His desire to further pursue his studies in magick resulted in meeting Israel Regardie in Studio City in the 1970s. Regardie introduced Hyatt to Reichian therapy, which he insisted Hyatt learn prior to any magickal pursuits."
Also we all kind of need to thank Hyatt for introducing the world to hundreds of writers like Robert Anton Wilson thru his publishing company New Falcon Press
ps. Wilhelm Reich is the only person that i know of, that both NAZI Germany and the US government burned books of. The US government put Reich in jail and he had a so-called heart attack a few days before his release.
I put Reich in the same category as Tesla.
and thanks again for Hyatt's name, looks very interesting and will require further study :)
I like Reich especially his book (or run on sentence) Listen Little Man!" The Hyatt stuff I was referring to were his more practical books based on Psychology like The Psychopaths Bible, Undoing Yourself and To lie is Human. They are a kind of Synthesis of Hoffer, Rand, Nietzsche and Mencken with a solid practical angle to help scrub away the mental mung we collect over a lifetime.
considering where the German scientists migrated to after WWII you could say they were the same people :)
and thank you for bringing Christopher Hyatt to my attention. I've found some video interviews of him and plan on linking the one i like the best on my site. Got to love the net :)
I was thinking more like the fact that Coke changed its name in Europe to Fanta to keep selling product. Prescott Bush helped american investors fund the Nazi war machine. The prize for subhuman anal-grease goes to I.B.M who sold punch card computers to the Nazis so they could manage the massive task of exterminating six million people. The tattoos on the wrists of survivors are IBM punchcard numbers! The holocaust seems "unbelievable"to many because this fact has been edited out History!
i agree, and don't forget that NASA was seeded by NAZI scientists. Of course this isn't really a discussion in the "language of mathematics" videos. Back to math :)
Good point..I am starting a major math review and I don't remember what order the branches of Mathematics go in. I was going to go with Algebra then Trigonometry, Geometry and finally Calculus. I also was wondering what Calculus book is best any recommendations? People keep telling me to go with James Stewart but he has six Calculus books out and the rest say Spivak or Apostol is the best.
i've had a few people ask me about book recommendations so i'm going to do a video on it but here is the book i use for calculus.
"Calculus, with analytical geometry" Howard Anton, Drexel University.
mine is really old, published in 1988, third edition, but it's the one calculus book that i understood really well, probably because it had lots of example.
for the addition the way it is done with the line is very long and not useful, and you can see that he not uses it at the end of video. If you have difficulties to calculate you can make this : join all the positive numbers and make the sum, make the same with negative, and make the difference.
And to make a difference, for example : 12-27, make in you head 27-12 and put a negative sign to the result.
It is more simple and faster than drawing a line with 15 box. WIth the line it is equivalent to count one by one which is the worst algorithm to calculate.
I'd like to expand on the initial example and say it's even simpler to understand if it's 0 + 5 - 2 = 3 and 0 - 2- 5 = 7 because that way there is some 'origin'.

@chychochycho lol alright. its not genius but, I always thought the -2 - 5 looked odd. :P

I was always wondering why - and + multiplied give a negative number. It seems obvious but I have no idea why :]

Thanks for uploads Chychochycho the part about how x/0 is like infinity is really interesting and mind boggling.

Multiplying and dividing is way easier than adding and subtracting.
Great video, helped alot.

-(+=Negative
+(-=Negative
+(+=Positive
-(-=Positive
That's one thing that can help you as well.

That works for everything right?

hi jsellers,
the equation became 2+ +5 = 7 ... in the video the + looks like a negative (resolution problem) ... so it's 2 - -5 = 2 + 5 = 7
hope that makes sense ... take a look at the video again and i think it will :)
ps. also, your calculation is correct. 2 - 5 = -3

if you calculate like this you'll take a lot of time to calculate horrible
luisfigo7et10 3 years ago
luisfigo7et10,
Calculating like this has worked just fine for me.
If you think this algorithm is time-consuming, please suggest one that isn't.
I am sure many would be thankful for it. I would.
Thanks.

for multiplying the way it is done is correct
luisfigo7et10 2 years ago
for the addition the way it is done with the line is very long and not useful, and you can see that he not uses it at the end of video. If you have difficulties to calculate you can make this : join all the positive numbers and make the sum, make the same with negative, and make the difference.
luisfigo7et10 2 years ago
with the example of the video:
10-6-7+4-2=10+4-6-7-2=14-15=-1
if you know how to add positive numbers, it is more simple than in the video.
Here you are.
luisfigo7et10 2 years ago
